Genesis of professions and language learning: 16th – first half 19th c.

The early modern period saw the emergence of a number of professional groups in Europe that both shared characteristics with modern professions and showed distinct early-modern features. A key aspect of this process was the introduction of specialized education, which often included language learning. This was particularly true for occupations where proficiency in specific languages was essential, such as diplomats, diplomatic translators, secretaries, scribes, scholars, and clerics. Moreover, due to the intensification of transnational contacts and geographical mobility among specialists as well as the circulation of printed books, language proficiency became an integral part of the education for many other professional groups, such as military officers, engineers, and artists. The objective of the workshop is to contribute to our understanding of the roles played by both state and private actors in the development of linguistic training for early modern professional groups and to assess differences in the emerging professionalisation policies across Europe.

Humanisme juridique et utopie

Réseau « Humanisme juridique »

Composante essentielle du renouveau intellectuel européen, le courant dit « humanisme juridique » (it. Umanesimo giuridico, angl. Legal Humanism, all. humanistische Jurisprudenz), particulièrement fécond aux XV^e et XVI^e siècles, se définit par une approche des textes hérités du droit romain qui s’oppose et en même temps complète les traditions médiévales de la glose et du commentaire. Des chercheurs travaillant sur l’humanisme juridique ont décidé de créer un groupe de travail qui les rassemble. Il s’agit de faciliter la convergence, l’échange et la mise en commun de ressources entre les spécialistes partenaires, qui ressentent le besoin d’approfondir leurs connaissances de façon complémentaire et souhaitent la mise en place d’une action commune et coordonnée dans le domaine de l’humanisme juridique. En 2025, le thème du séminaire sera « Humanisme juridique et utopie ».

Too often confined in the perimeter of military studies, the concept of débâcle discloses a plurality of dramatic, iridescent, vivid meanings. Facing a defeat means participating in a collective trauma, questioning established certainties, redeeming national identity in the face of a moral and political challenge. Rather than reconstructing the episodes of defeat and rebirth in French history, the eighth call for papers of Suite française invites to reflect on the perception of such episodes and their disruptive psychological and political impact. How were débâcle and similar categories such as décadence, trauma, failure, and renascence used by thinkers witnessing the Terror, Sedan, Vichy, and Dien Bien Phu?

The Research Training Group (RTG) examines the politics of the Enlightenment from the 18^th century to today. Its approach is twofold: firstly, it asks – in terms of the genitivus subjectivus – how both the historical Enlightenment of the 18^th century and also later Enlightenment enterprises think and act in a political sense. Secondly, it questions – in terms of the genitivus objectivus – how the conception of Enlightenment is constructed and perpetually renewed through political aims and decisions: How does the Enlightenment shape politics? And how do politics shape the Enlightenment?

We are interested in articles that shed light on the visual culture of the former Habsburg Empire and Central Europe broadly defined from the medieval period to the present. Contributions that position Austrian art practices within a wider international framework are particularly welcome. We value innovative art historical approaches, such as challenging established narratives or exploring transnational exchanges that highlight the interconnected and cross-cultural nature of the art world. The Belvedere Research Journal is also keen to feature work on artists and figures who have been historically underrepresented, with a special emphasis on women. We encourage interdisciplinary research that blends art history with methodologies from other fields, such as digital humanities, social sciences, and cultural economics.

Par transformation, restauration ou reconstruction. Depuis l’Antiquité, chaque époque a répondu à sa manière aux défis des périls encourus et des exigences culturelles. Adapter l’édifice aux conditions actuelles, ? En Bourgogne, terre de l’art roman, les églises sont nombreuses à raconter les heures sombres de leur histoire et les temps de résurrection, mais aussi les choix des architectes, les savoir-faire des hommes de l’art et les rêves des fidèles.

Copistes et secrétaires : production et circulation des manuscrits au XVIIIe siècle

Les métiers de secrétaire et de copiste semblent, au premier abord, bornés à des activités mécaniques. L’Encyclopédie, par exemple, ne mentionne dans l’article « Copiste » que les compétences de « bien lire et bien écrire », alors que cette personne participe assurément à la circulation des savoirs entre particuliers et permet la diffusion de la philosophie clandestine et des nouvelles à la main. Quels sont donc les rôles concrets joués par les secrétaires et les copistes (y compris les auteurs se copiant eux-mêmes) dans la production, la diffusion et la conservation des œuvres au cours du long XVIII^e siècle ? Nous souhaitons étudier toute une activité matérielle et pratique autour du manuscrit, pour elle-même et pour ses enjeux intellectuels et éditoriaux, en nous demandant si le travail de secrétaire et celui de copiste évoluent ou non en fonction du genre du texte, des conditions techniques, et au gré des différents contextes économiques.

The study of libraries is situated within cultural history at the intersection of social history, history of knowledge, the history of imaginaries, political history, and the history of cultural practices. Their forms, their projects, their uses, and their representations have evolved alongside the societies that have financed, built and supported them. This issue of the Revue d’histoire culturelle XVIIIe-XXIe siècles, devoted to “the cultural history of libraries worldwide”, will consider this history from three points of view : the place of the library in fiction and the arts ; the library as a collective project – or counter-project ; the library as a social practice.

The Worlds of Pre-Modern Neutrality (ca. 1400-1800): Norms, Institutions and Practices

This symposium aims to contribute new insights to the long-term history of neutrality, focusing on its "pre modern" dimension broadly understood (ca. 1400-1800). Indeed, the law of neutrality started to emerge in the Early Modern Age through the practices and beliefs of the European state system, but also from its interactions with non-European normative and cultural systems. Different but complementary angles of approach can be used to understand this phenomenon: e.g. diplomatic history, IR history, political history, economic history and legal history. Throughout history, polities as well as private actors have interpreted neutrality in flexible and divergent ways, e.g. proposing a proactive-assertive approach or a more passive and inward looking one. Benefiting from multiple disciplinary perspectives, the symposium takes into consideration both the theory and the practice of neutrality, advancing our knowledge of the often-contested conceptualisation of legal regimes at sea as well as on land. Such a conceptualisation depended on the interaction between situations of peace and diverged across different temporal and spatial coordinates.
