Call for papers - Representation
Les échanges lors de ces journées d'étude porteront sur la question de l’« entre-deux » dans la peinture de l’Europe renaissante. Le concept d’Entre-deux offre aux arts visuels ce que leur médium ne peut leur donner, c’est-à-dire la possibilité de développer une narration, plusieurs étapes d’un même récit en une image dont la fixité est ainsi transcendée. Par l’« entre-deux », peintres et sculpteurs ajoutent une dimension temporelle à leur travail, pouvant ainsi représenter l’événement en train de s’opérer et apportant ainsi une continuité entre les états passé et futur de l’individu ou de l’objet. Ces journées ont donc pour but de considérer l’« entre-deux » comme un objet d’étude à part entière et non pas comme un moment de passage d’un état à un autre, insignifiant par rapport à la situation de départ ou au résultat final.

Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries
What are "Venetian" commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts.

Urban spaces, mobility and "citadinité" in the Mediterranean cities (14th to 18th century)
The panel focuses on mobility and insertion in the cities of the Mediterranean area, during the early modern age. Since the Ancient times, Mediterranean cities are centers for commercial and cultural exchanges, and crossroads of migratory streams. These "sedimented" cities have a long tradition of multi-cultural society and reception of foreigners while remaining, to this day pivotal centers for international circulation and migration, and gateways to Europe.

Il s’intéresse prioritairement aux mondes francophone et anglophone, sans exclure les recherches portant sur d’autres pays de l’aire européenne.

Les paroles d’élèves dans l’Europe moderne (XVe-XVIIe siècle)
LIXe colloque international d’études humanistes
Le LIXe Colloque international d’études humanistes du CESR sera consacré en 2016 aux actions d’enseignement dans les collèges et les petites écoles de l’Europe moderne, en se penchant plus particulièrement sur les élèves et leurs manifestations vocales. Cette approche particulière répond d’une part au développement récent de l’intérêt des historiens pour ce paramètre de l’activité humaine (sound studies, performance practice studies). Elle permet en outre de s’interroger sur l’acquisition des savoir-faire (déchiffrement, lecture, maîtrise de son allure verbale…) indispensables à l’insertion dans une société irriguée par le flux de l’information oralisée. De plus, cette interrogation de la dimension sonore de l’enseignement scolaire incite à délaisser les abstractions (l’enfant, le maître) pour tenter d’en souligner les contingences linguistiques, culturelles ou sociales.

Literature, Politics and Religion
Placed under the aegis of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), this international conference will reassess the notion and the hermeneutics of censorship in early modern England. How was censorship organized? Did it prevent or promote creativity? Why and when did writers decide to enter "the safe territory of the oblique" (Annabel Patterson)? Participants are invited to provide a variety of interpretative answers and to develop a new understanding of how censorship refashioned the social, political and artistic life of Shakespeare's contemporaries.

L'histoire de l'art à l'épreuve de la voûte de la chapelle Sixtine
Ces journées d'études se proposent d'interroger le statut de « chef-d'œuvre » de la voûte de la Sixtine en effectuant un retour sur les différentes lectures dont elle a fait l'objet, tout en proposant de nouvelles perspectives d'interprétation. Pourquoi d'une part la voûte de la chapelle Sixtine marque-t-elle une rupture épistémologique et esthétique et pourquoi d'autre part l'histoire de l'art, qui y revient sans cesse, ne parvient-elle pas à s'entendre sur sa signification ?

Etched and Engraved Arms, Armour and Personal Objects in Early Modern Europe
This specific conference will focus on etched and engraved metal objects made in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries, which, through their civil or military functions, were made to adorn the male body -- portable weapons, armour, buckles, watches, jewels, objects of devotion, boxes, snuffboxes, etc. Special attention will be given to the different etching and engraving techniques used to decorate these objects with scenes or symbols.

Économie de la pierre aux périodes historiques en Lorraine et régions limitrophes (Ier siècle av. J.-C. – XVIIe siècle)
Les travaux de recherche du PCR sur « La pierre en Lorraine aux périodes antiques et médiévales : de l’extraction à la mise en œuvre » trouvera son aboutissement dans une publication, aux Presses universitaires de Nancy, dont la sortie est prévue en 2015. Dans la continuité, les organisateurs souhaitent poursuivre et diversifier leurs questionnements, en élargissant le champ d’étude aux régions limitrophes (Alsace, Champagne, Bourgogne, Franche-Comté, Luxembourg, Rhénanie-Palatinat, Wallonie) et à des domaines non traités au sein de ce PCR. La diachronie est privilégiée du Ier av. J.-C. au XVIIe siècle.

Elements of proof and commercial litigations in the Mediterranean (15th-19th century)
What can the evidentiary artifacts that are deployed to resolve commercial litigations tell us about the legal configuration of the Mediterranean between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries? Since 2012, the Mediterranean Reconfigurations research program (ConfigMed) has been studying commercial disputes, legal pluralism, and intercultural trade in the Mediterranean, at the crossroads of different traditions, legal regimes and referents. In this context, our method helps to address conflicts involving economic actors from Europe to the Ottoman Empire and North Africa, as well as to focus on the encounters, compromises and possible exchanges of these geographical entities. Systems of legal proof belonging to the prominent legal structures from ancient times to the modern era have been subject of several investigations and a wide range of publications between the late 1950s and early 1960’s, when the collapsing colonial empires discovered - or rediscovered - the foundations of indigenous legal theories, known to play a critical role in their independence.

Légendes noires et identités nationales en Europe
Revue Histoire culturelle de l’Europe
L’équipe ERLIS (EA 4254, Université de Caen) prépare un ouvrage collectif sur le thème « Légendes noires et identités nationales », qui constituera le premier numéro de la revue électronique Histoire culturelle de l’Europe. Son propos sera d’explorer les rapports variés entre réputations collectives dépréciatives et construction ou évolution d’une identité nationale, en Europe, dans un cadre chronologique large qui, partant de la fin de l’époque médiévale, abordera l’aube de l’ère contemporaine. On envisagera d’une part le processus d’élaboration ou de renforcement de la cohésion d’une communauté et la création d’un sentiment national par contraste avec l’image collective de l’ennemi ou de l’Autre, et d’autre part les effets des légendes noires sur leurs propres objets, de la réfutation à l’intériorisation, sans négliger le rôle que la fiction littéraire peut jouer dans ces processus.

Francis I and the Artists of the North (1515-1547)
As an extention of the events of 2015 celebrating the 500th anniversary of the accession of Francis I (1 January 1515) and the victory at Marignan (13-14 September 1515), the symposium will focus on the ties between the "grand roy Françoys" and the North. Whereas the exchanges between Francis I and Italy have attracted much attention, the King’s relations with the old Southern Netherlands, as rich and complex, have not been carefully studied. The symposium "Francis I and Artists of the North (1515-1547)" aims to fill this gap by considering the interest of the King of France in artists and musicians from the old Southern Netherlands and their works.

Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context
A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

Female heroism, heroines and famous women (XVIth-XVIIIth centuries)
A representation without fiction
Ce colloque souhaite interroger les modalités de qualification d’un héroïsme féminin et ses représentations dans une littérature non fictionnelle, à une période historique où la diffusion du néoplatonisme épurant le sentiment amoureux revivifie à terme les valeurs courtoises, où un augustinisme condamne la vanité politique et où les guerres de religion ont laissé une place inégalée jusqu’alors aux femmes, et non plus seulement à des femmes, sur le devant d’une société en pleine mutation. Si le héros est celui qui agit sur le champ de bataille, l’héroïne de la première modernité ajoute à la prouesse militaire à laquelle elle ne répugne pas toujours, la piété, la sagesse, la culture, la chasteté et la beauté. Ce colloque se propose de scruter l’engouement pour la figure féminine non seulement dans les représentations mais aussi dans la réception de ces représentations en synchronie autant qu’en diachronie longue.

Workers and Mobility in the Early Modern Cities: Actors and Strategies
The important changes that are currently taking place in the job market have prompted historical consideration of the issues of job insecurity and flexibility. Far from being exclusive to modern day societies, a mobile workforce - above all between sectors - was also a feature of the early modern world of work. The work of charitable organisations and confraternities, individual and family strategies, career paths, contracts and work agreements are all fields in which traces of this mobility are visible and it was seen not so much, or not solely, as a chance for social betterment but also and above all as a unstable state. The goal of this workshop is to contribute to an analysis of certain more specific labour mobility issues in the light of the historical debate which has taken place over recent years.

The archaeology of seige wars on the French-Dutch border, 16th-18th century

L’archéologie ouvre aujourd’hui un champ nouveau d’analyse des dynamiques de guerre, notamment par la découverte de vestiges de campements laissés par les mouvements de troupes. Le croisement de ces apports récents avec les sources géo-historiques permet de reconsidérer l’importance de la logistique technique, humaine, militaire, administrative et financière sur la construction des frontières du nord-ouest de l’Europe et le développement d’une armée de métier, entraînée pour appliquer des techniques innovantes issues des travaux des ingénieurs militaires, entre les XVIe et XVIIIe siècles. L’objectif des organisateurs de ces journées consacrées à l'archéologie des guerres de siège sur la frontière disputée et mouvante entre la France et les anciens Pays-Bas durant la période Moderne, est de produire une synthèse scientifique qui renouvelle la question. Les contributions attendues doivent permettre de croiser les derniers apports de l'archéologie, de l'histoire militaire et de la géopolitique historique, dans une démarche transdisciplinaire et transfrontalière.

En Europe comme dans l'Inde moghole du XVIe siècle, la chasse au gros gibier est l'apanage du souverain. Par elle, le roi déploie sa puissance dominatrice sur la nature, mais également sur les hommes et les territoires, comme en témoigne la réforme des Eaux et Forêts de François Ieren 1516. La modernisation du château de Chambord, résidence de chasse par excellence, place également cette activité au coeur de la vie artistique. Toutefois, la chasse n'est pas uniquement une activité royale. Elle constitue aussi une quête plus profonde, la poursuite de Dieu chez Pétraque ou bien de l'aimée chez Ronsard. Ainsi, la chasse inspire poètes, intellectuels, musiciens et peintres, appelant à une approche pluridisciplinaire centrée sur la Renaissance.

What exactly was innovative, revolutionary even, in Shakespeare's youthful productions, and what might be learnt from them by today’s young audiences, scholars, performers and readers? How far can today’s young actors, directors, academics in literature and history, find inspiration for their own works in the “Young Shakespeare” experience? What types of products and productions aimed at young people today draw their titles, characters or elements of plots from Shakespeare?
