Colloque international du tricentenaire
L’association Amis de Rochambeau marquera le tricentenaire de la naissance de Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau (le 1er juillet 1725) en organisant un colloque international dans sa ville natale, Vendôme. De nombreux historiens, chercheurs et universitaires se retrouveront ainsi pour composer un large portrait de Rochambeau à travers leurs spécialités respectives et pour participer au renouvellement de l'histoire de la guerre.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions
The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

Too often confined in the perimeter of military studies, the concept of débâcle discloses a plurality of dramatic, iridescent, vivid meanings. Facing a defeat means participating in a collective trauma, questioning established certainties, redeeming national identity in the face of a moral and political challenge. Rather than reconstructing the episodes of defeat and rebirth in French history, the eighth call for papers of Suite française invites to reflect on the perception of such episodes and their disruptive psychological and political impact. How were débâcle and similar categories such as décadence, trauma, failure, and renascence used by thinkers witnessing the Terror, Sedan, Vichy, and Dien Bien Phu?

Strangers and foreigners: hospitality and hostility in Britain, France, and Germany, 1680-1850
The ongoing wars and migrations have foregrounded the issue of the hosting of migrants and the duty of hospitality. This international Early career symposium aims to explore the relationship to foreigners in Germanophone areas, France and Britain (including colonial spaces) from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), which provoked international migrations of Protestant refugees, to the revolutions of 1848, which were characterized both by internationalist fervour and by political exiles.

Concepts of Exile, Refuge, and Asylum, c. 1750–1850
The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, signed at Geneva on 28 July 1951, defined who is eligible for and what constitutes asylum for refugees under international law. Its universal expansion in 1967 remains the cornerstone for today’s global refugee regime, which has shaped the legal definition of the refugee and rights to asylum for over fifty years. Well before the second half of the twentieth century, however, the term refugee and related concepts were used, debated, shaped and mobilized by a variety of historical actors and state authorities in different regions of the world. And despite being inscribed in international law, refugee status and asylum remain contested and politicized, and continue to apply unevenly to people fleeing violence and oppression. This workshop seeks to build upon the emerging field of refugee history by focusing on the transition and overlap between early modern and modern periods.

The workshop will examine a series of issues about the forms of activity in which women engaged that they themselves could see as having political dimensions or that sought to influence the direction taken by the communities and society of which they were a part. Our interest is in exploring the range of parts that women in Europe played in the growing contestation and confrontation that developed in this period and that was increasingly coupled with political demands for reform or for recognition of various forms.

Il ambitionne d’explorer, à l’échelle européenne, et de manière comparatiste, cette multiplicité de relations entre polices et crises révolutionnaires, entre polices et mouvements révolutionnaires, qu’ils soient massifs ou plus confidentiels, avec des modes d’intervention politique et des systèmes de représentations variés.

Dans le cadre de l’exposition Mémoires républicaines en Vaucluse qui se déroulera au Musée d’histoire Jean Garcin à Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (84800), la Conservation départementale projette de publier un catalogue d’exposition dans lequel figureront les textes et documents de l’exposition majeurs ainsi que des articles scientifiques. Dans ce contexte, un appel à contribution est lancé afin d’embrasser au mieux la période révolutionnaire en Vaucluse et d’offrir un contenu scientifique supplémentaire à l’exposition.

Il convegno è dedicato alle teorie, ai discorsi e alle pratiche attraverso le quali le autorità pubbliche e i soggetti politici hanno contrastato, favorito, manipolato e spiegato alcuni tra gli eventi insurrezionali più importanti dell’età moderna (secoli XVI-XIX). L’obiettivo è riflettere su come tali azioni abbiano contribuito a fissare in presa diretta le interpretazioni dei conflitti politici e la fisionomia dei gruppi sociali e delle fazioni che vi prendevano parte. A tal fine si procederà tramite un approccio interdisciplinare, che combinerà l’analisi storico-evenemenziale con quella discorsiva e mobiliterà le metodologie della storia del pensiero politico e del diritto.

Blasphemy and violence. Interdependencies since 1760
Liberas (Ghent, Belgium), in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany), organises an international colloquium devoted to the interdependency between blasphemy and violence in modern history. Both young and established scholars will focus on specific incidents of blasphemy and sacrilege in Europe and the Arab world.The eve preceding the conference (4 March), internationally renowned expert Alain Cabantous will give a keynote lecture in French on blasphemy and sacrilege during the French Revolution.

La notion de « justice transitionnelle », définie par un rapport du secrétaire général de l'ONU sur le « rétablissement de l'Etat de droit et [l']administration de la justice pendant la période de transition dans les sociétés en proie à un conflit ou sortant d'un conflit » (2004), peut-elle aider à comprendre l'année 1795, l'an III de la République française ? En s'interrogeant sur les notions de victime, de réparation, de mémoire, de réconciliation, de garantie de non répétition, le colloque invite à des échanges sur la pertinence de cette notion pour comprendre un moment-clé de la Révolution française.

Time and temporality under the Revolution
Accélération du temps, perte des repères, situation de déphasage... autant de termes largement utilisés pour décrire divers phénomènes de la période révolutionnaire. La Révolution offre un terrain d’investigation privilégié pour qui s’intéresse à la manière dont ses acteurs ont conçu, vécu et représenté le temps. À un autre niveau d’analyse, on s’intéressera à la manière dont les révolutionnaires ont mis en place de nouveaux instruments de mesure et de représentation du temps : du calendrier révolutionnaire (octobre 1793) à la confection de nouvelles horloges, le temps s’impose comme une véritable obsession, pouvant être à l’origine de cas de folie.

Representing conflict and disorder in the 18th century (1715-1799)
Depuis deux ans, l’équipe du Salon XVIIIe organise des séminaires et des Journées d’études consacrés à des thèmes variés liés à la recherche en histoire de l’art de l’époque moderne. Si, l’année dernière, le thème proposé était celui de la survivance d’un motif décoratif du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle, nous souhaitons à présent organiser une journée d’études consacrée au thème du conflit au XVIIIe siècle, et plus particulièrement sur ses représentations, ses significations et les manières de le mettre en scène. Nous avons choisi une borne chronologique allant de la mort de Louis XIV (1715) à la fin de la Révolution française (1799), en nous intéressant à tous les supports visuels (gravure, peinture, sculpture, architecture) afin de voir comment, mises en synergie, les différentes formes d’art expriment, de façon plus ou moins évidente, la notion de conflit, de trouble et de désordre.

Cette journée d’études autour des fréquentations maritimes aux Antilles répond à un double objectif. Il s’agit d’abord de rendre aux marines militaires toute la complexité de leurs missions. À cet objectif s’ajoute celui de décentrer le regard et de considérer l’espace des Antilles non plus seulement comme une destination mais comme des mers parcourues de manière régulière par des navires qui devaient s’adapter aux différentes conditions de navigation qu’ils rencontraient.

The immediate occasion of this conference is a new body of work—recent or forthcoming books by Trevor Bernard and John Garrigus, Paul Cheney, Pierre Force, Mary Lewis, Frédéric Régent and Bernard Gainot—that addresses the making and unmaking of French colonial society and its imperial structures.

Figth, suffer and Die in the Wars of the French Revolution and of the First Empire
Approches croisées histoire-anthropologie
This symposium entitled takes part in the renewal of studies concerning the historical anthropology of war focusing on the 1789-1815 period. To start with, violence in all forms will be the topic of a questioning bases on the chronological point of view. Is it relevant to consider the period as a time of strong reorientation sided with an increase in importance of the “ideologising” of violence on the battlefield ? By setting the analysis at the level of fighters, our purpose is to think about the sufferings that are inherent to war.
