  Theodor Lipps (1851-1914): the work, its context and posterity - interdisciplinary perspectives

  Une perspective interdisciplinaire

  Cette journée d'étude se propose de réexaminer la pensée de Theodor Lipps (1851-1914), philosophe, psychologue et esthéticien, qui fut un penseur majeur de l'Allemagne de la fin du XIX^e et du début du XX^e siècle. Souvent cité pour ses travaux sur « l'empathie » (terme approximatif pour « Einfühlung »), Lipps demeure un auteur très mal connu dont l'œuvre a été étonnamment négligée par l'historiographie. On réunira, pour la première fois, des spécialistes de l'auteur qui, sur la base d'approches méthodologique variées, s'attacheront à revisiter ces thèmes typiquement lippsiens que sont l'esthétique, la psychologie, la théorie de la connaissance et la logique, mais aussi des aspects moins connus de sa pensée comme l'éthique, les sciences du langage ou l'histoire de l'art. Ceci devrait permettre de mieux comprendre les tenants et les aboutissants d'une œuvre sophistiquée et la manière dont elle s'inscrit dans son contexte scientifique et philosophique, ainsi que de souligner la pertinence des idées lippsiennes pour la recherche actuelle. On espère ainsi contribuer à la réhabilitation de la figure de Lipps et à la réévaluation de sa pensée, tout en dressant un état des lieux de ce champ de recherche inchoatif que sont les « études lippsiennes ».

  This conference will discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making. It will also consider the impact of the new multilateral management of conflicts (through the United Nations, but also the European Union) on European and North American societies, including on young people and student movements, whose membership often goes far beyond national spheres.

  Society, culture, community in the United Kingdom (1970-79)

  This two-day conference focusing on British society of the 1970s seeks to enlarge and to alter perspectives on the period. The intention is to examine the dynamic of contradiction, inventiveness and tensions that is at work. The intention of the conference-organizers is to circumvent and thus question any “teleological” or linear reading of the period in terms of the necessary “coming of Thatcherism” in the United Kingdom, where the politics and culture of the period are read as so many symptoms or omens of the 1979 election result. The aim is to focus on the plurality of conflicting possibilities evident in the period, and therefore on the contingency of outcomes.

  The new avatars of the detective novel - collective work

  « Mais où va donc le roman policier ? » s’interrogent beaucoup de critiques dont quelques-uns ont fini par succomber à l’idée que la mort du genre est inéluctable. « Il ne va nulle part, rétorque ironiquement le tandem Boileau-Narcejac. C’est un pommier qui donne différentes variétés de fruits, mais ce sont toujours des pommes. L’erreur, précisément, est de vouloir modifier son essence par des greffes qu’il supporte toujours mal ». Depuis les années soixante-dix du siècle écoulé, et devant l’évolution rapide du roman policier, la multiplication de ses branches (roman de suspense, roman noir, néopolar, roman d’espionnage, polar humoristique, polar historique, polar mythique, etc.) et l’apparition de nouvelles formes romanesques mi-littéraires, mi-policières, les théoriciens commencent cependant à s’interroger sur l’avenir de la littérature noire et les risques qu’elle court si elle poursuit ses « mues » successives. Le présent projet d'ouvrage collectif invite les universitaires et les jeunes chercheurs à réfléchir sur les nouveaux avatars du roman policier en étudiant par exemple les enjeux de l’écriture policière subversive et les principales stratégies de détournement, la réception des romans policiers hybrides, le coefficient du style « littéraire » dans le polar, et les nouvelles approches théoriques et méthodologiques pour aborder les avatars contemporains du roman policier.

  The Price of Peace: Modernising the Ancien Régime?

  Europe 1815-1848

  In many historiographic traditions, the so-called "Restoration" has been depicted as an awkward interval between the Napoleonic Wars and the age of nationalism. This international conference has the ambition of breaking down old myths and stereotypes about the ‘Restoration’ in order to think more broadly and openly about the key transitions and issues. The conference will revolve around the provocative historiographical issue of whether the post-Napoleonic order represented an attempt to reconcile the heritage of the Ancien Régime with a deeply transformed world. Topics explored by panels of invited experts from across Europe will include Rethinking the "Restoration", New departures in international relations, Constitutions vs. Charters, Rebirth of composite monarchies, Before and Beyond the Nation, Historicising the Ancien Régime?, New borders and old identities.

  Religions and the presidential elections in the United States

  Catholics have long been an important force in American electoral politics even if they make up 21% of the American population. Could they be, compared to the other religious denominations, the game changer of the next elections ? Despite widespread agreement among scholars that the partisan behavior of Catholics has changed, there is much less consensus on the nature of that change, its permanence, and its causes. This symposium will review the historical patterns of Catholic partisanship and voting behavior, as well as those of the other denominations, discuss major perspectives on electoral change (Republican shift, Hispanic and Asian vote, interreligious alliances) and test there perspectives with the latest survey data.
