  5th HYDRΩMED international symposium

  Dans le cadre du réseau HYDRΩMED, nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter à participer au Ve colloque sur la gestion de l’eau en Méditerranée antique, qui aura lieu à Aix-en-Provence, du 30 mai au 1er juin 2016. Le colloque fera le point sur les recherches menées depuis 2015 par le réseau et propose aux intervenants quatre pistes de travail, qui correspondent aux quatre axes du programme : l’étude paléoenvironnementale, les aménagements hydrauliques antiques et l’exploitation des ressources naturelles, de l’histoire des sciences et des techniques à l’histoire politique et économique et les cultes et cultures de l’eau et des eaux.

  Practices, Politics, and Policy in Premodern Societies (6th-17th Centuries)

  Money is at once elusive and concrete. As a mode of economic exchange it exists within a relatively fixed playing field, with clearly delineated boundaries of benefits and costs. However, poor handling, bad advice, or even a bad turn at a game of chance can swallow money up in one fell swoop. The workshop will investigate this wide array of pre-capitalist, western and non-western contexts from the English Isles, Flanders, France, Germany, Italy, and China between the Middle Ages and Early Modern times.

  Dans le cadre du programme TERESMA (Produits de terroir, espaces et marchés hier et aujourd’hui) et des collaborations franco-italiennes mises en œuvre depuis plusieurs années entre Parme, Milan, Tours et Bordeaux autour de l’histoire des produits alimentaires, cette journée d’études vise à permettre la rencontre et les discussions scientifiques entre chercheurs italiens et français autour des produits laitiers, de leur histoire et de leur géographie. Elle a aussi pour objectif de renforcer les liens entre la recherche, les institutions locales et les acteurs économiques.

  Dairy produce in the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages and Modern period: production, sales and consumption

  Contrairement aux périodes préhistoriques pour lesquelles la question des débuts de la consommation des produits laitiers animaux est fondamentale et suscite de nombreuses recherches, rares sont celles consacrées à la production et à la consommation de ces produits aux périodes médiévales et modernes. Pourtant, les produits laitiers, et particulièrement les fromages, sont des composants clefs de l’alimentation méditerranéenne. Produits issus des terroirs dont les spécificités en font le goût, ils sont commercialisés tant à l’échelle locale et régionale qu’internationale.

  The Political Economy of the Islamic Republic of Iran

  An accurate assessment of the current economic and political situation in Iran today clearly implies examining the relations between the structure of political power, the dominant forms of ownership, and economic activity. Furthermore, the interweaving of the economic and political spheres in Iran today can be better understood through this lens. Finally, an analysis of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s political economy can also provide keys to understand the country's future political evolutions. An analysis in terms of political economy thus requires a multidisciplinary approach involving exchanges between economists, political scientists, sociologists, and historians.

  Typical Venice?

  Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries

  What are “Venetian” commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts. This conference focuses on the question of how Venice designed and exported its own identity through all kinds of its goods.

  Un monde qui va plus vite ? Le point d’interrogation est de rigueur car, entre les propos convenus qui n’hésiteraient pas à répondre « oui » et ceux qui seraient tentés de dire « non », la marge est grande dans laquelle doivent s’insérer les géographes de concert avec les savants des sciences sociales et naturelles. En effet, si la géographie pense d’abord l’espace, le lieu, le territoire ou la région (au sens générique du terme), elle intègre aussi le temps compris comme succession de moments, d’événements et de durées. Le pays invité de ce XXVII^e Festival inetrnational de géographie sera la Belgique. Les propositions d'interventions sur ce pays sont également les bienvenues.

  The Smaller European Powers and China in the Cold War, 1949-1989

  This international conference aims to examine the policies of the smaller European powers towards China – and vice versa – during the Cold War. Thereby it focuses, on the European side, on both Western and Eastern Europe – regardless of whether a country was part of the NATO or the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, the conference proposes to include both Chinas, namely the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (RoC). While this should allow for the analysis of different relational constellations, the chronological framework – that ranges from the Communist victory in China in 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – should enable us to identify policy shifts and patterns.

  Situating the Africas in a world history of food: cuisine, consumption and eating together

  Cet atelier, proposé dans le cadre des IV^e Rencontres des études africaines en France (REAF) a pour objectif de rassembler des études ayant pour trait commun d’intégrer l’histoire de l’alimentation en Afrique – et dans les diasporas – aux dynamiques de l’histoire des mondialisations et de l’histoire connectée. Les contributions, portant sur une période large allant du début de la période moderne à nos jours, devront interroger la construction des goûts, des habitudes de consommation, des façons de manger et notamment de manger ensemble, en relation avec les échanges culturels et économiques entre régions d’Afrique, entre ces régions et les autres continents, et enfin entre ces régions et leurs diasporas. Les contributions pourront interroger autant les pratiques alimentaires elles-mêmes que les discours sur ces dernières émanant des sociétés africaines et des diasporas.

  Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption

  Contrasting with the Prehistory for which the question of the beginning of the consumption of dairy products is of critical importance, few studies are devoted to the production and consumption of these products during medieval and post-medieval periods. However, dairy products, especially cheese, are key components of the Mediterranean diet. Sometimes disregarded, sometimes recommended by dieticians, the latter are traded both at local and international scale. Therefore it seems necessary to organize a workshop on "Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption".

  Dans un contexte global changeant où l’Institut Pasteur, et tout particulièrement son réseau international doivent relever un certain nombre de défis majeurs, l’approfondissement des perspectives historiques devient un enjeu crucial. Après deux colloques tenus à Tunis en 2012 et Paris en 2014, cette nouvelle rencontre se propose d’approfondir l’aperçu social et culturel des Instituts Pasteur du Maghreb et de l’Iran à travers des questions comme l’architecture, les lieux de mémoire, la production littéraire, les représentations iconographiques, la contribution des pasteuriens à la connaissance des populations et sociétés locales ou les retentissements politiques des activités scientifiques.

  Tourism and WWI - practices, prospectives and memory (1914-2014)

  Pratique, prospective et mémoire (1914-2014)

  Si l’histoire générale du tourisme au XX^e siècle a été largement étudiée, elle délaisse quasiment systématiquement la première guerre mondiale. Pourtant, loin d’être mis entre parenthèses, le tourisme perdure durant le conflit et trouve même de nouvelles potentialités nécessaires à son essor. Quelques travaux existent mais demeurent épars, partiels et mal connus. Cet ouvrage collectif se propose donc de réaliser une synthèse du tourisme durant la Grande Guerre, ou en lien avec la Grande Guerre, en Europe ou en rapport avec l’Europe occidentale. Trois axes - non exhaustifs - sont suggérés : les pratiques touristiques, l’adaptation des structures touristiques au contexte particulier du conflit et le tourisme mémoriel.

  Pour la troisième année consécutive, ce séminaire organisé par le Centre d'histoire des systèmes de pensée modernes (CHSPM), Philosophie, histoire et analyse des représentations économiques (PHARE) et l'Institut d'histoire de la pensée classique (IHPC) explorera les liens entre fiction et économie au XVIII^e siècle, du double point de vue des motifs économiques (l'argent, la pauvreté, et les échanges en général) à l'œuvre dans la littérature, et des récits et dispositifs fictionnels présents dans les textes économiques. Cette année, il inaugure un partenariat avec le séminaire « Littérature et philosophie » du Centre des sciences de la littérature française (CSLF) de l'université Paris Ouest Nanterre-La Défense.

  New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949

  The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has long constituted a classic component in academic histories of post-war Germany. After having been the subject of sustained scholarly attention in the 1970s and 1980s, the subject has subsequently faced a decline in academic interest. This two-day conference is intended to showcase new research and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies. We are inviting papers from both emerging scholars and established specialists.

  Precious metals in the medieval Mediterranean

  Mining, processing and circulations

  Silver on one side, gold on the other? The medieval Mediterranean was an area in which precious metals were produced and circulated, intertwining three worlds, both friends and foes: Roman Christianity to the West, byzantine Christianity to the East, and Islam to the South. Precious metals (gold, silver, copper and lead), at the origin of numerous objects of the material culture and currencies used by the economies, filled the societies. They were mined, processed, commercialised, controlled and hoarded by a wide variety of stakeholders and institutions, from simple peasants to emperors.
