Centré sur les imaginaires, les images matérielles et les approches sensibles du quotidien urbain, il se déclinera à partir de trois objets thématiques : imageries urbaines ; ville douce et bien-être en ville ; habitat et habiter précaires. Les contributions sont ouvertes aux travaux de recherche, expériences ou projets menés par des chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales, concepteurs d'espaces ou artistes.

  State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)

  Spaces, Images, Rituals

  From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

  Image and sport

  10th congress of the GRIMH (Groupe de réflexion sur l’image dans le monde hispanique)

  Qu’il s’agisse d’immortaliser en peinture les loisirs d’une société, d’immobiliser photographiquement les corps dans l’effort, de filmer la tension dramatique d’une rencontre internationale ou d’une partie amicale improvisée, tous les arts et médias ont produit des portraits de joueurs et d’athlètes. La manifestation portera sur cette alliance entre l’image et le sport envisagé comme activité physique codifiée et partagée. Pourquoi crée-t-on une image du fait sportif ? La presse le montre pour en recenser les actualités. L’artiste prend comme sujet de son œuvre le geste ou la rencontre. La mise en scène est intrinsèque à toute pratique et cette dramatisation offre un matériau rêvé pour les créateurs d’images. L’ensemble de ces représentations imprègne l’imaginaire collectif de toutes les sociétés.

  The CW, , television network

  The US network The CW celebrates its ten-year anniversary this year. As the product of a merger between previous networks The WB and UPN, the small network has distinguished itself over its ten-year tenure with policies that are unique in the American television landscape. The diversity and originality of its programming have attracted an audience that is perhaps smaller than those garnered by the larger networks, but which has proven itself fiercely loyal to the channel. This day-long seminar therefore seeks to examine The CW’s fictions, but also, from a more global perspective, the channel itself. A case study of The CW will allow us to analyze these little-studied series but also to blend approaches to better understand this type of fiction.

Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a letter (not to exceed one page in length) explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Nominations by authors or publishers for their own books will not be considered.

  Cultural Literacy in Europe: Second Biennial Conference (CLE2017)

  CLE 2017 is dedicated to the issue of motion, which is crucial for the contemporary human condition. The concept of motion captures the state of affairs in Europe today, where seemingly rock-solid arrangements, like the shapes of borders, are being nullified and apparently irreversible processes, like European integration, are turned around and dismantled. It marks our spatial relations, as is clearly visible in the challenges of migration, experiences of social and professional mobility, social movements or tourism. Mobility also has a temporal aspect, which is visible in the processual and performative character of identity, memory or history. The other key term we would like to address is emotion, which aims to contextualize this movement and localize it in human affectivity – feelings, motives and perceptions. Texts and other kinds of representations, the body in movement, forging personal links, living with memories – all these bring motion and emotion together. We believe that the notion of cultural literacy will help us read and comprehend these diverse, changeable phenomena.

  The world of Gennaro Magri - dance, music and opera in the Enlightenment

  Danse, musique et opéra dans l’Europe des Lumières

  Centré in primis sur l’œuvre de Gennaro Magri (ca. 1735-1780), maître de ballet au Théâtre San Carlo de Naples et auteur du Trattato teorico-prattico del Ballo (1779), ce colloque a pour objectif de se pencher sur la vie et la carrière de Magri en Italie et en Europe, et plus largement de réfléchir sur le rôle de la danse à Naples dans le contexte européen. Dans une perspective théorico-pratique, ce colloque sera le lieu d’un questionnement sur l’histoire, la technique, l’esthétique et la poétique de la danse théâtrale notamment dans ses rapports aux autres arts : il s’agira de réfléchir sur les enjeux culturels et sociaux liés à la relation entre danse noble et danse comique, entre style italien et style français, dans le dialogue interculturel entre les nations.

  Repetition/s: Performance and Philosophy in Ljubljana

  Contemporary developments in the increasingly intertwined fields of philosophy and performance call for a renewed inquiry into the question of repetition. With its unique critique of ideology arising from a synthesis of German Idealism and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the Ljubljana School (Dolar, Zupančič, Žižek et al.) continues to furnish important theorisations of repetition and performance as they pertain to subjectivity and the political. One of the primary aims of “Repetition/s” will be to investigate and develop the usefulness of the Ljubljana School’s theorisations for the emerging field of Performance Philosophy.

  Liberation struggles, the “falling of the empire” and the birth [through images] of African nations

  The fortieth anniversary of Portuguese decolonisation of Africa has acted as a catalyst in discussing how Portugal “imagined” colonial politics through moving images and how these propagandist portrayals began to be questioned by the Portuguese “Novo Cinema”. This can be seen in works that were censured and prohibited. Portuguese colonial cinematographic representations were later challenged by films made in the context of the liberation movements and by images that emerged out of the national cinematographic projection (Frodon) of the new Portuguese-speaking African countries. This conference intends to go some way in highlighting common aspects in the emergence of cinema in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, which have all been studied individually.

  Médailles et jetons en Europe, de la Renaissance à la première guerre mondiale

  Au XV^e siècle, la médaille renaît dans les cours italiennes et revêt une valeur commémorative qui s’étend aux autres souverainetés européennes. Les médailles, les jetons et autres objets monétiformes sans valeur fiduciaire se répandent alors pour connaître de véritables moments d’apogée durant les XVII^e, XVIII^e et XIX^e siècles : les plus célèbres manifestations de cette production étant, par exemple, l’édition d’histoires métalliques de Louis XIV à Napoléon, en passant par le Tsar de Russie. Malgré les fluctuations du goût qui lui font successivement connaître des périodes de renom puis de défaveur, la médaille ne perdit jamais de sa force d’usage et fut tout autant employée par les régimes républicains pour véhiculer leurs idéaux.

  Première coopérative photographique créée au Brésil, l’Agence F4 a accompagné les grands mouvements politiques et sociaux qui ont agité le pays dès la fin des années 70. Par son engagement politique et militant, par ses choix esthétiques et thématiques mais aussi grâce à la forte personnalité de ses photographes, l’agence constitue, à bien des égards, un acteur majeur du renouveau du photojournalisme au Brésil dans les années 1980. L’année 2016 marque le 25ème anniversaire de la fermeture de l’Agence F4, l’occasion de revenir sur cette aventure avant tout humaine en donnant la parole aux photographes eux‑mêmes pour mieux cerner leur participation à l’évolution du photojournalisme.
