  A study on conflicts in emerging countries

  The creative potential of conflicts has often been forgotten in social sciences. Solutions often emerge from contradictions, as illustrated by climate change negotiations (and agreements). Many actors stand at the core of contemporary conflicts, promoting their interests on different scales, in many different forms, with various rationale. Consequently, we need to identify the new actors of globalization in order to grasp the development dynamics in emerging countries, eventually paving the way for interdisciplinary conversation.

Dans ce contexte, les sciences humaines et sociales ont un rôle clé dans l’analyse des transformations sociales, culturelles et économiques générées par le développement du concept même d’innovation.

  The Fabergé Museum in Saint Petersburg owns the world's largest collection of works by Carl Fabergé, including nine of the famous imperial easter eggs, and aims to become the main international platform for the study of the art and life of the famous jeweler. In this year marking the 170^th anniversary of Carl Fabergé, the museum dedicated its annual academic conference to Carl Fabergé, his firm's activities in Russia and abroad, its place within Russian culture as well as to Fabergé's influence on modern and contemporary jeweler’s art.

  Images and uses of the people in African literatures and of the diaspora

  Le « peuple » désigne, généralement, des couches sociales démunies aux contours indéfinis, aux identités mouvantes et corvéables à merci. Mot polysémique et polyvalent, « le peuple » est aussi perçu, entre autres dénominations, comme synonyme de populace, foule, masse anonyme, bas peuple, petit peuple, gens du peuple, ceux d’en-bas, basses classes et classes laborieuses. Dans les pratiques sociales comme dans les usages linguistiques, est dit « populaire » ce qui s’exclut du modèle élevé, à l’instar du parler non conventionnel rebelle au niveau de langue courant ou soutenu. Souvent associé aux marginaux, aux déclassés, aux laissés-pour-compte, le « peuple » est un sujet récurrent de l’histoire littéraire universelle, tout comme de la création littéraire et artistique d’Afrique et de la diaspora, de la période coloniale à nos jours.

  Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

  The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.

  Writing history for young people

  The past two decades have seen an increase in the number of publications in France on the subject of youth literature, which have approached the subject from various historical angles. Generally tending to favour the colonial period or periods of conflict and mainly focusing on the issue of propaganda, these studies have examined the creation of a colonial or war culture for children. Most notable among these studies are La guerre des enfants: 1914-1918 (The children’s war: 1914-1918) by Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau (1993) and, more recently, Enfants en temps de guerre et littératures de jeunesse XX^e-XXI^e siècles (Wartime children and youth literature from the 20^th-21^st centuries), edited by Catherine Milkovitch-Rioux et al (2013), and Enfance et colonies: fictions et représentations (Children and colonies: stories and representations) (volume 3 of the online journal Strenæ, edited by Mathilde Lévêque, 2012). In an extension of these studies, this volume of Amnis aims to invite discussion more specifically on the writing of history for young people.

  Appropriating Space in Colonial and Imperial Contexts

  Since their renewal in the 1980s, colonial and imperial studies have often focused on cultural representations and social practices. More recently, scholars have shown increased interest in the spatial dimensions of colonial phenomena, producing thematic atlases and analyzing imperial cartographies. Using the concept of appropriation, this call for papers seeks to stimulate further research on concrete connections between human interactions and spatial transformation in colonial and imperial settings. This multidisciplinary international conference will focus on modern (post)colonial and imperial spaces (19^th–21^st century), including both urban and rural environments. We aim at decrypting complex dynamics of spatial appropriation and their impact upon social relations. How does the radical transformation of a particular space impinge upon resource accessibility and use, local human experience and the construction of social identities?

  Première coopérative photographique créée au Brésil, l’Agence F4 a accompagné les grands mouvements politiques et sociaux qui ont agité le pays dès la fin des années 70. Par son engagement politique et militant, par ses choix esthétiques et thématiques mais aussi grâce à la forte personnalité de ses photographes, l’agence constitue, à bien des égards, un acteur majeur du renouveau du photojournalisme au Brésil dans les années 1980. L’année 2016 marque le 25ème anniversaire de la fermeture de l’Agence F4, l’occasion de revenir sur cette aventure avant tout humaine en donnant la parole aux photographes eux‑mêmes pour mieux cerner leur participation à l’évolution du photojournalisme.

  The theme of this year’s Radical Americas symposium is “Decolonizing Americas”, acknowledging the long arc of struggle for freedom since the period of European colonization of the Western Hemisphere in the 15t^h century.   Le désert d’Atacama est un observatoire privilégié du fait minier en Amérique, à la fois par la diversité de formes minières existantes (métalliques et non métalliques, à ciel ouvert ou souterraines, petites et de très grande échelle...), par l’exceptionnelle intensité du phénomène (gisements mondiaux de cuivre, de lithium, de nitrates....), par sa profondeur historique (exploitations pré-incas, incas, coloniales, industrielles et contemporaines), par les conditions  particulièrement favorables à la conservation des sites et, du point de vue anthropologique, par la diversité et la richesse de cultures minières qui convergent sur ce désert. Dans sa dimension contemporaine, le phénomène minier est à la base d’importants conflits environnementaux, de l’émergence ou de la reconfiguration d’acteurs sociaux, ainsi que d’un flux permanent de circulations nationales et transnationales.
