What Matters in Contemporary Anglophone Cultures

“What Matters” is an invitation to rethink the weight of habits, established structures and validated categories. Arguing that someone/something counts goes against economic/budgetary/financial accounting, which is typically the work of a dominant power that keeps precise accounts, compiling or capitalising, trying to contain or control. “What matters” is an invitation to give an account of what does not seem to count, what is unthought of or invisible. “What matters” is a response to what is challenging research, and a direct appeal to its agency to redefine the common space and what would be a (co-)habitable world. It invites us to grasp how research can make people act and react, and provoke awakening. We are looking for papers in linguistic, literary, dramatic, historical, sociological, political, film and serial studies and, more broadly, cultural studies.

Plus de vingt ans après la parution décisive des Monumenta linguae Messapicae (2002), après les résultats considérables obtenus par les fouilles des dernières décennies, et après la synthèse récente de Joachim Matzinger (2019) sur la langue messapienne qui a permis de relancer sur des bases solides la discussion des inscriptions en langue locale, le colloque international « Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique » a pour objectif de faire dialoguer les épigraphistes et les linguistes spécialistes des textes en langue messapienne et les archéologues spécialistes de la culture matérielle en Messapie.

Cette rencontre sera l’occasion de penser la fabrique des relations internationales depuis les Amériques latines en s’appuyant sur des réflexions récentes autour de la diplomatie culturelle, la Guerre froide globale, les circulations étudiantes et militantes, ainsi que l’émergence de nouveaux acteurs internationaux ou l’élaboration de normes internationales. En partant de l’hypothèse que les Amériques latines sont traversées par les principales dynamiques qui participent à la construction de l’ordre mondial depuis la fin du XIX^e siècle jusqu’à nos jours, ces journées d’échanges ouvriront un espace de discussion autour de trois axes structurants : les espaces, les pratiques et les objets, et enfin, les acteurs et les actrices.

We are delighted to announce the Call for Papers for LAPASEC 2025. Christoph Heyl (Univ. Duisburg-Essen) and Rémy Duthille (Univ. Bordeaux Montaigne) are continuing the long tradition of the Landau-Paris Symposia on the Eighteenth Century, welcoming both established scholars and early career researchers. The LAPASEC series focuses on the literature and culture of the British Isles of the period, but it is also open to topics relating to the British colonies, France, Germany, and further afield.

Secularization of religious assets in Enlightenment Europe: urban development, architecture, and art works

The suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773 marks the last step of the Order’s progressive dissolution initiated fifteen years earlier, in Europe and in its colonies. This act of suppression was the culmination of a broader secularisation movement concerning religious congregations across Europe, from the 1760s to the French Revolution. Whether driven by reformatory or by economic interests, all acts of suppression and secularisation had the same consequences: a large number of movable assets and real property, estates and art works were either reallocated to other religious congregations or put on sale, when not confiscated altogether. Several studies have already investigated the dispersal of abolished congregations’ assets in different parts of Enlightened Europe, but a broader overview is yet to be drawn.

Lapidariums. Precious sources for the history of a monument and its sculpted decoration

"In Situ" Journal n°53 – 2025

The French term ‘dépôt lapidaire’, a lapidary depot, rendered here as a lapidarium, is understood to mean collections of archaeological or architectural fragments and pieces of sculpture, assembled so as to maintain an organic link with the monument or the site they come from. The time seems to be ripe, then, as the topic as a whole takes on numerous forms, to draw up a general, if provisional analysis of the situation. It seems useful to think about how best to share information coming from different sectors (historic monuments, archaeology, museums and parks and gardens). New lines of action can perhaps be sketched out for a new phase for these very special cultural properties, located at the frontiers between the movable and immovable heritage.

This journal is especially devoted to the study of the dynamics of memories and of cultural identity representations which have shaped the spaces of experience, the horizons of expectation, and the sociocultural imaginaries in “Europe’s Europes” in the 20^th and 21^st centuries. It provides a special outlet to the analysis grounded in cultural memory studies, and particularly in contemporary theories of “agonistic memory”, considered as a “third way”, that of the research of an equilibrium between the contraries embodied in the two competitive paradigms which have disputed their hegemony in the European area, particularly since the end of the Cold War: the cosmopolitan/ transnational one, and the national(ist)/ antagonistic one.

What are firearms? How did they impact on the history of European societies? What are the more promising research approaches for studying them? Firearms hold profound implications for European societies, influencing international relations, the diffusion of violence, and State sovereignty. This workshop will convene researchers examining themes such as the relationship between European States and guns, global efforts to regulate arms markets, the role of firearms in changing the societal perception of violence, and the semantic nuances defining these instruments. Through exploration of diverse research methodologies, the workshop aims to highlight the significance of firearms as both a subject of scholarly inquiry and a lens for examining critical aspects of contemporary history, shedding new light on the European past – one trigger pull at a time.

Il est temps aujourd’hui de mesurer l’importance de la pensée de Souleymane Bachir Diagne dans son unité, sa question principale et essentielle aujourd’hui, mais aussi son parcours et sa diversité. Professeur à Columbia mais aussi à l’ENS après l’avoir été à Dakar, au Collège de France, à Northwestern, et dans le monde entier, il propose une nouvelle pensée de l’universel, « latéral », « ouvert », qui renouvelle l’universalisme. Il a traversé et traverse encore tous les domaines : la philosophie générale et son histoire, la philosophie de la religion, la philosophie politique et culmine dans sa pensée de la traduction. C’est une pensée en dialogue, avec laquelle il faut dialoguer aujourd’hui. Tel est le but de ce premier grand colloque international à lui être consacré, à l’Ecole normale supérieure-PSL.

The interdisciplinary colloquium on “Nights of the South” will provide an opportunity for researchers from different disciplines, artists, association leaders, practitioners and elected officials from many countries to take stock of this work on and in the Global South. The aim will be to better understand the evolution of urban and rural nightlife and the ways of living and inhabiting nights at different scales according to cultures, countries, territories, cities; to identify evolutions, tensions, inequalities of access, but also strategies for the development or protection of nights carried out by different actors; and to reflect upon the preferred forms of governance of the night.

Les médailles de Louis XIV et leur livre

L’histoire métallique de Louis XIV fut la seule histoire officielle de son règne publiée de son vivant. La Petite Académie, pensionnée par le roi, confectionna les médailles puis publia le livre qui les explique en 1702, suivi d’une réédition complétée en 1723 ». Quatre colloques internationaux Les médailles de Louis XIV et leur livre ont été organisés par le GRIC (Groupe de recherche Identités et cultures, université du Havre) en partenariat avec différentes institutions depuis 2015 afin de rassembler les recherches sur les médailles comme sur le livre. Ce cinquième colloque propose de poursuivre ce travail. Bien des points restent encore à élucider en numismatique comme en histoire du livre, ainsi que le disait Yves-Marie Bercé lors de son discours d’introduction au deuxième colloque : « l’histoire métallique est inépuisable ».
