Maintaining public goods in an era of austerity

Local government service budgets have continued to be cut, exacerbating the social and environmental vulnerabilities that municipalities now have to manage with limited resources. The purpose of this dossier is to focus on the spatial dimension of the continuance and evolution of public goods in a context of austerity. In particular, we encourage ethnographic and situated perspectives that consider top-down political experiments and bottom-up urban practices and their convergence in the protection, maintenance and regeneration of public goods. The goal is to give space to studies that investigate the relationship between austerity, public goods and care practices.

Understanding and reconverting tertiary vacancy
The vacancy of tertiary buildings is a growing issue in urban and regional dynamics. While vacant offices are a visible symptom of economic, social and environmental mutations, they also represent an opportunity to rethink the role of business districts and the uses of the city as a whole. The aim is to analyse tertiary vacancy in France and Europe for identifying the potential for converting unoccupied buildings, whether into housing or other functions: coliving, hotels, industrial or commercial activities, data centres, living labs, collaborative spaces, etc.

Socio-environmental issues and planning challenges
The evolution of market gardening and fruit trees is a rapidly expanding field of research, hence the need for in-depth studies to identify and maximize their positive impacts in disparate urban contexts (geographical and climatic) marked by often difficult conditions and particularly strong competition between different possible uses of resources. They play an essential socio-cultural role by reflecting important heritage, symbolic, and identity values. Finally, they bring local communities together around participatory and innovative projects involving citizens, public decision-makers, associations, and researchers.

Feeding urban territories in North Africa
Crossed perspectives from Algeria and Egypt
This collective volume explores urban food supply systems in North Africa, with a particular focus on Algeria and Egypt, where rapid processes of metropolization and megalopolization intensify pressures on food resources. Through a territorially grounded approach, the book aims to examine the challenges of food security in cities facing urban sprawl, loss of agricultural land, rising food demand, and increasing dependence on imports. The objective is to provide a cross-cutting analysis of territorial dynamics, supply chains, urban–rural reconfigurations, and the limitations of public policies in addressing urban food systems. Contributions are expected to adopt empirical, comparative, or modelling approaches, addressing themes such as urban planning, multi-level governance, food justice, short supply chains, and the regulation of informal economies, all within a broader perspective of strengthening the resilience of urban food systems.

Contested Geographies of Mountain Futures in the Socio and Eco-climate crisis
This call for papers invites contributions exploring, from a critical geography and political ecology perspective, the socio-environmental futures of mountain regions in the context of the eco-climatic crisis. It focuses on how power relations, conflicts, discourses, and imaginaries shape policies and visions of “mountain futures”. The aim is to analyze the tensions between dominant and alternative approaches, questioning dynamics of governance, socio-environmental justice, and the social production of nature. Submissions should offer theoretical and/or empirical reflections on post-crisis scenarios, paying particular attention to subaltern actors, alternative visions, and forms of contestation across diverse mountain contexts.

Ce colloque vise à mettre en scène les diverses formes de résiliences associées aux vulnérabilités croisées auxquelles individus, organisations et territoires sont de nos jours soumis, sous la pression de plus en plus croissante d’une mondialisation toujours plus oppressive, particulièrement dans les marges et périphéries socio-spatiales. Il se focalisera sur la manière dont les difficultés et la capacité à surmonter celles-ci se manifestent dans les relations entre mobilités, culture et territoire, les stratégies de résilience face aux multiples vulnérabilités, l’impact des faiblesses de notre monde actuel et sur la façon dont sont développées les forces pour y faire face.

Il s’agit d’envisager, d’un point de vue d’ordre épistémocritique, comment Stendhal développe un savoir géographique original et peut-être inédit au sein d’une œuvre proprement littéraire. Plusieurs directions pourraient ainsi être privilégiées autour de l’idée d’un « Stendhal géographe » : Le contexte : Quelles sont les sources de l’innutrition et de la documentation stendhaliennes ? L’écriture : comment, par une logique du mixte, Stendhal s’inscrit-il dans ce contexte et développe des perspectives de constitution d’un savoir géographique au croisement de différents savoirs, de différentes pratiques ?

Récits toponymiques : itinéraires, lieux et histoires
Donner un nom à un lieu n’est jamais neutre : un toponyme porte les marques du temps, de la mémoire, des usages, d’une langue, d’une culture ou d’un pouvoir. Il résume une origine, un récit fondateur, souvent oublié mais toujours porteur de sens. Le cas de Rome l’illustre parfaitement : son nom, issu de la figure mythique de Romulus, incarne mémoire collective, pouvoir symbolique et héritage linguistique. Il témoigne d’un entrelacs d’influences (latines, étrusques, grecques) qui construisent un récit complexe, évolutif et pluriel. Ce sont ces « itinéraires toponymiques », réseaux de signes et récits spatiaux, que cet ouvrage collectif propose d’explorer, en croisant approche linguistique, culturelle, mémorielle et narrative des noms de lieux.

Cette journée d’étude sur les géographies critiques vise à favoriser les échanges entre géographes mobilisant des approches critiques dans leurs recherches ou enseignements. Elle se concentre sur la présentation des travaux de jeunes géographes, l’exploration des approches critiques en géographie rurale et urbaine, et les défis de l’enseignement en temps de crise.

La transformation contemporaine des territoires, catalysée par l'évolution des technologies numériques, la contribution des avancées en informatique et l'intensification manifeste des bouleversements climatiques, soulève des questionnements épistémologiques fondamentaux concernant l'évolution de nos espaces anthropiques. Le concept émergent de « territoires intelligents et résilients » s'inscrit dans une démarche scientifique pluridisciplinaire, conjuguant les approches géographiques, anthropologiques, culturelles et technologiques. Cette manifestation scientifique vise à fédérer des chercheurs issus de multiples disciplines autour de cette thématique.

Maintaining public goods in an era of austerity

This special issue aims to highlight the spatial dimension of public goods maintenance and evolution in the context of austerity by adopting the spatial care perspective through three axes: 1) actors and practices involved in maintaining public goods; 2) maintaining public goods on a day-to-day basis; 3) the work and values of public goods. We encourage ethnographic and situated perspectives that consider top-down political experimentation, bottom-up urban practices and their convergence in the protection, maintenance and regeneration of public goods. This call is open to interdisciplinary, national and international contributions.

La 1ère édition du colloque international hybride des jeunes chercheurs en géographie
Le laboratoire des études sur les Ressources, Mobilité et Attractivité (LERMA) relevant de la FLSH Uuniversité Cadi Ayad Marrakech, en partenariat avec l’équipe de recherche Sciences Appliquées à l’Environnement et au Développement Durable et l’UMR Territoires de l’Université d’Auvergne-clermont ferrand, organise la 1ère édition du colloque international hybride ds jeunes chercheurs en géographie à Marrakech du 21 au 22 Avril 2025. Ce premier colloque vise à rassembler les jeunes géographes pour débattre des problématiques géographiques actuelles tout en interrogeant l’apport des jeunes à l’analyse et le traitement de ces sujets.

Vieillir à l’ère du dérèglement climatique : perspectives internationales
Revue « Gérontologie et société »
Le vieillissement des sociétés et le dérèglement climatique lié aux conséquences des activités économiques sur l’environnement représentent deux enjeux majeurs pour l’humanité. Ces deux phénomènes se passent de manière simultanée et ce sont bien des sociétés vieillissantes qui sont appelées à mener des actions pour prévenir le changement climatique et s’adapter pour faire face à ses conséquences. Cet appel à articles vise à penser le vieillissement et le dérèglement climatique de façon concomitante et à questionner leurs liens avec les politiques publiques, la démographie, la santé, les modes de vie individuels, la production, l’échange et la consommation de biens et de services, les inégalités sociales ou encore les vulnérabilités.

Colonialité du modèle métropolitain : imaginaires de l’aménagement et modes de vie urbains
Cette première journée vise à explorer la « colonialité » intérieure au territoire national, inhérente au modèle capitaliste métropolitain dans l’organisation urbaine du territoire national, en particulier à travers les dynamiques de métropolisation. Il s’agira plus largement d’évaluer la pertinence du concept et des théories de la (dé)colonialité lorsqu’elles sont appliquées aux champs de l’urbanisme (et son idéologie de l’aménagement urbain), de la sociologie (et ses modes urbanisés de vie en société) et de l’anthropologie (et ses conceptions narcissiques de l’individu-sujet).
