The second investigates participatory and co-creative frameworks for community engagement, assessing their role in sustaining heritage, reinforcing identity, and fostering social cohesion for sustainable development.

What is an eco-cultural niche? Rethinking the shape of eco-cultural niches
This workshop aims at bringing together ecologists, anthropologists, environmentalists and archaeologists, in order to discuss the definition of eco-cultural niches, a concept that was first proposed by Banks et al. 2006. Significant time will be given to open discussions in order to co-create a new theoritical framework for the analysis of human-environment macro-relationships in the past, using the approach of eco-cultural niche modeling. All scholars (students, teachers, researchers,...) interested in this approach can participate to the meeting and discussions.

Quelle responsabilité des institutions patrimoniales face aux naufrages collectifs ? Mémoires des êtres et des environnements disparus
Cette journée d’étude sera l’occasion de revenir sur la responsabilité des acteurs du patrimoine face aux naufrages collectifs – au sens propre et aux sens figurés. Pensée comme comme un espace de formation et d’échange, elle entend poser ces questions pour l’ensemble des spécialités professionnelles du patrimoine, tant dans les domaines de la conservation matérielle que de la recherche, du patrimoine culturel immatériel, de la mémoire et de la valorisation auprès des publics. Cette journée a pour objectif de mettre en lumière les différentes recherches en cours dans le champ patrimonial et d’interroger notre responsabilité, scientifique et éthique, face aux histoires naufragées. Une attention particulière sera portée au rôle des institutions patrimoniales dans leurs approches de la conservation et de la valorisation.

The economies of nature in medieval and modern periods
The 12e summer school in economic history proposes to tackle the fundamental theme of the use that medieval and modern economies made of nature, i.e. the way in which the elements making up their environment were transformed in order to be inserted into the processes of production, exchange and consumption, thus becoming resources with multiple functions that also fundamentally transformed the living environment of human beings, contributing to the construction of rural or urban landscapes. This is as much a question of epistemology as of empirical knowledge, and the partial overlap between two sub-disciplines, economic history and environmental history, raises questions.

The aim is to develop and cross-fertilise methodological approaches based on case studies.

Le colloque « Repenser le Sahara médiéval : documents connus, lectures inédites (XIIIe-XVIe siècle) » clôture un projet Émergence(s) soutenu par la ville de Paris entre 2019 et 2023 et développé au sein de l’UMR Orient et Méditerranée. À travers une approche multiscalaire, du local au global, le Sahara médiéval (hors région nilotique) est pris en compte non seulement comme une interface dynamique, capable d’assurer la connexion et la mise en étroite relation des territoires qui l’entourent, mais également comme une aire chrono-culturelle à part entière, se plaçant dans l’altérité, politique, économique, sociale et culturelle, du Maghreb et de l’Afrique sahélienne.

Issue 46 of the Cahiers de Mariemont undertakes to explore the various ways in which ruins, real or fake, have been incorporated into the art of gardening. This volume therefore calls on historians, art historians, archaeologists, architects, town planners, botanists, gardeners and other garden design specialists to identify the common features and major developments in the practice of integrating and enhancing the value of ruins into European gardens over the centuries.

Elles ont chacun de leur côté fait l’objet d’une recherche dynamique. Ce colloque propose d’observer les réponses apportées par les habitants pour occuper, exploiter et vivre dans ces milieux contraignants de la période moderne à l’époque contemporaine, sur deux espaces : les marais du littoral charentais et les estives des Pyrénées Atlantiques.

Chaque année, le congrès national des sociétés historiques et scientifiques, lieu de rencontre et d’échange unique dans le paysage de la recherche française, rassemble environ cinq cents participants parmi lesquels des universitaires issus de très nombreuses disciplines : histoire, géographie, sciences, ethnologie, anthropologie, préhistoire et protohistoire, archéologie, philologie, histoire de l’art, environnement, etc. Il accueille également des jeunes chercheurs (dont c’est parfois la première intervention publique) et des érudits locaux.

The workshop invites mainly, but non-exclusively, Master’s, PhD students and early career researchers of history, archival studies, archaeology, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, palynology, and palaeoclimatology. Three main themes will be examined: Primary sources, be they written documents, paleodata, or archeological material; Environmental transformations in periods of political, social and economic change; Connections between regional and local environmental transformations.

The idea of heading off to the countryside is associated nowadays with a wish to get away from a stressful, noisy, and at times oppressive and foul-smelling urban environment, to rest in peace and quiet, in healthy surroundings, in close contact with the bounties of the natural world and animals in their “natural” habitat. Far from any anachronistic intent, applying this expression to court studies is a call to scholars to adopt interdisciplinary approaches to examine the many ways in which aristocratic circles related to and interacted with their rural environment.

Les structures de l’organisation et de l’appropriation de l’espace
Ces secondes journées d’étude sur les paysages ruraux, seront consacrées aux structures et aux relations spatiales que les formes des paysages ruraux révèlent, traduisent et portent. À travers leurs formes actives ou fossilisées émergent, en effet, les modalités, présentes et passées, de l’organisation et de l’appropriation de l’espace, entre realia et représentations : appropriation du sol ; occupation du sol ; connexions, flux et réseaux. La dimension matérielle entretient ici une relation féconde avec la dimension juridique et institutionnelle des paysages ruraux (statut de la terre, droits de propriété et usage, rapports de production, projection dans l’espace des intentions, des intérêts et des conflits entre les acteurs en présence…) et donc avec la sphère politique et sociologique.

In the workshop organized by Hajar, three archaeological case studies which relate to agriculture and/or water management during Early Islam will be presented, followed by responses and a discussion. These will enable another examination of Andrew Watson’s arguments from the 1980s about an “Arab agricultural revolution” or “green revolution” - this time from an archaeological perspective.

Ce numéro de Projets de paysage s’intéresse aux sols des villes, à ces sols oubliés et déconsidérés, qui pourtant jouent ou pourraient jouer un rôle majeur dans les espaces urbains en fabrication ou en réagencement. Cet appel à textes invite à explorer une grande diversité de situations géographique, historique et culturelle, principalement urbaines, mais sans s’interdire d’investir des territoires périurbains, voire ruraux concernés par exemple par les flux de terres générés du fait de la construction (ou de l’expansion) urbaine ; à prendre comme objet d’analyse les actions de sensibilisation, les pratiques d’enseignement et les situations pédagogiques déployées autour des différents axes et dans des contextes variés.

Dans le cadre de son programme de recherche et de formation pluriannuel « Des cailloux sous la langue. Sources matérielles et discours », la structure fédérative de recherche ALLHiS organise un état des connaissances, des problématiques et de la théorisation sur l’étude des paysages ruraux en sciences de l’homme et de la société. Cet état de l’art sera développé au cours de trois doubles journées d’étude, dont les travaux donneront lieu à une unique publication finale.
