The Exploitation of Subsurface Resources in Ancient Greece

The Greek term metallon may refer to either a mine or a quarry, whether used for the extraction of rock, ore, or salt. In this sense, it does not denote the nature of the resources themselves, but rather their shared origin: the subsurface. This common provenance opens the door to a cross-disciplinary reflection on the exploitation and management of such resources in ancient Greece. In recent decades, the study of the past has seen a growing interest in environmental questions. A key dimension of this research concerns the relationship between ancient societies and their environment: how did human groups interact with their surroundings to meet their needs, build infrastructure, or produce everyday objects? In this field, the rise of interdisciplinary approaches – at the intersection of archaeological sciences and historical inquiry – combined with recent methodological advances, has led to major developments in the field.

Spartan dual kingship is one of the most astonishing aspects of Sparta's constitution: despite the vicissitudes of history, it was perpetuated with a certain constancy in a particular political system from its mythical origins to its evolution into a monarchy and disappearance in the Hellenistic period. This preservation has been achieved at the cost of constantly reinventing the representation of kings and their institutional function.

Political space in ancient times: representation, description, transformation

This conference aims to develop a reflection on the links between space and politics in ancient times, using an interdisciplinary approach. While archaeologists and historians have been interested in the ways in which space can be a political object, what is missing is a general reflection that would show the contribution of a spatial approach to politics in Classics. To renew our thinking on political space, we will compare the practices of archaeology, whose field of study is resolutely linked to space, and history, whose approach is often more political, with those of literature and philology, which have also seized on space as a methodological tool.

Las IX Jornadas Filológicas son organizadas por tres universidades establecidas en la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia. Se trata del principal evento de estudios clásicos en nuestro país, el cual, sin embargo, ha contado siempre con invitados internacionales reconocidos por su contribución al desarrollo de este campo disciplinar. Esta novena edición de las Jornadas estará dedicada al tema de la migración y la ciudadanía en el mundo antiguo y tendrá como propósito último establecer paralelos fructíferos y formular propuestas aplicables a las problemáticas actuales suscitadas a partir de los flujos migratorios y las políticas que toman los Estados para enfrentarlos.

Ancient worlds and new perspectives

L’unité de recherche ANHIMA (Anthropologie et histoire des mondes antiques) à partir de l’expérience des programmes qui y sont menés, a souhaité, pour ce colloque, situer et rendre visibles les résultats des recherches récentes ; des recherches qui non seulement renouvellent profondément notre connaissance du passé antique, mais qui, en outre, animent notre regard sur la modernité. En effet, aujourd’hui encore, l’Antiquité est souvent mobilisée pour justifier des modèles présentés comme fondateurs de notre vie en commun : la citoyenneté, la relation entre les hommes et les femmes, la sexualité, la relation à la politique et au spectacle, etc. Or, dans ces domaines, les poncifs sont nombreux et révèlent souvent la méconnaissance des résultats de la recherche récente sur l’Antiquité classique.

Ce colloque s'inscrit dans le cadre du programme de recherche « Systèmes toponymiques en Égypte de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge », développé par l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale du Caire en partenariat avec Paris IV Sorbonne et comprendra deux sessions de conférences autour des thématiques suivantes : « Légendes onomastiques et imaginaire de l'espace », « Toponymie et description du paysage », ainsi qu'une table-ronde réunissant les participants au programme et un atelier de formation à destination des étudiants de master et doctorat.

Hellenism : Continuity and change

XXIIst International Conference on Francophone Modern Greek studies

Le XXIIe congrès des néohellénistes des universités francophones se tiendra du 26 au 28 mai 2011 à l’Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier III. Le thème de recherche retenu est celui qui a animé notre équipe d’accueil pendant longtemps et qui ouvre un champ de recherche assez largement pluridisciplinaire, de manière à ce que chacun d’entre vous y trouve de quoi déployer sa réflexion : « Hellénisme : ruptures et continuité ». Il s’agit de définir l’identité de l’hellénisme contemporain, ses relations et ses liens avec l’hellénisme antique. La question, longtemps écartée en Grèce comme marquée par une idéologie nationaliste, revient sur le devant de la scène, à cause de la réflexion identitaire qui s’impose actuellement, en lien avec les mouvements migratoires subis depuis quelques années, ainsi qu’en rapport à la crise aux multiples facettes qui ébranle actuellement le pays.
