The Phanariots have long animated the historiography of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Southeast Europe. Contemporary political commentators, as well as historians seeking to construct national(ist) narratives, branded the Phanariots with critiques of corruption, foreign interests, and the legacies of the Ottoman past. Yet, scholars have conducted scant research on how and why “Phanariots” and “Phanariotism” came to signify corruption, bad governance, and a seemingly inescapable Ottoman past after 1821. This workshop tends to this gap in historiography.

Antiracisms and the Social Sciences, 2025-2066
This seminar examines the history and sociology of antiracism—or antiracisms—in the Atlantic region since the end of the 18th century. We will be looking at how what we now call “racism” has been thought about and combated over the long term. Few studies are explicitly devoted to antiracism. We will, therefore, propose a genealogy of antiracist strategies. This seminar is committed to articulating a transdisciplinary and transnational perspective on the dynamics of anti-racist thought and practice.

Démocratisation des savoirs - Séminaire Lumières
À l'heure où l'Occident démocratique voit les libertés académiques violemment attaquées, où la science est discutée non pas dans ses résultats mais dans sa légitimité à pouvoir en rechercher, où l'acquisition des savoirs tout comme les pratiques culturelles et artistiques subissent de virulentes remises en question, où les principes fondamentaux d'un héritage républicain partagé bien au-delà du territoire national sont ignorés ou instrumentalisés, il nous paraît indispensable, et probablement salutaire, de transmettre et de questionner à nouveaux frais le projet émancipateur des Lumières, dans le cadre d'un séminaire résolument interdisciplinaire. Pour les deux premières années, la thématique choisie est celle de la démocratisation des savoirs.

Quatre mariages et un enterrement : fêtes et célébrations franco-polonaises (1645-1725)
Ce colloque international, organisé par le Centre de recherche du château de Versailles et la Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris, explore les relations franco-polonaises aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles à travers mariages dynastiques, exils royaux et échanges culturels. À l’occasion du tricentenaire de l’union de Louis XV et de Marie Leszczyńska (1725), il reviendra sur les autres alliances princières et sur l’accueil en France de Jean II Casimir. Les communications analyseront cérémonies, festivités et rituels funéraires, à partir d’archives, d’œuvres d’art et de littérature de circonstance. L’objectif est de mettre en lumière les enjeux politiques, diplomatiques et culturels de ces événements et la construction d’un récit durable de l’amitié franco-polonaise.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies (IZEA) at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg is offering 5 part time (65%) positions as part of the “Politics of the Enlightenment” Research Training Group (RTG 2999) as a Research Associate (m-f-d) for a fixed term of up to 4 years, starting from 01.04.2026. The Resarch Training Group explores the politics of the Enlightenment from the 18th to the 21st century in two respects: On the one hand, it examines the political claims and interpretations that have been and are being developed in the name of the Enlightenment. On the other hand, it focuses on the political discussions and measures that shape the understanding of Enlightenment in a global context to this day.

L’association Amis de Rochambeau marquera le tricentenaire de la naissance de Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau (le 1er juillet 1725) en organisant un colloque international dans sa ville natale, Vendôme. De nombreux historiens, chercheurs et universitaires se retrouveront ainsi pour composer un large portrait de Rochambeau à travers leurs spécialités respectives et pour participer au renouvellement de l'histoire de la guerre.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions
The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

La place des Lumières dans les pays arabo et/ou musulmans
Pour une nouvelle approche des liens Orient/Occident
Plusieurs phénomènes justifient une nouvelle problématique moins tournée vers le regard de l’Occident sur les pays musulmans que sur une construction d’un Occident à l’intérieur de ces mêmes pays. Les révolutions arabes en renouant avec la geste insurrectionnelle ont assigné les pays occidentaux à une situation de stagnation et de fermeture confirmée par les replis nationalistes ces dernières années. L’on doit s’interroger sur la définition des Lumières, objet en perpétuelle construction mais aussi redéfinir les espaces arabo-musulmans.

La modernité politique en ses textes (2024-2025)
Études de cas dans la France d’Ancien Régime
Consacré aux questions relatives à la modernité politique sous l’Ancien Régime, le séminaire traitera des dossiers en cours lors de séances de réflexion sur des corpus de sources qui soulèvent des problèmes méthodologiques et d’interprétation. Les séances de lecture des textes se conjugueront à d’autres interventions, plus ponctuelles, sur la construction d’un État dit « moderne » saisie au travers de la production de ses sources, en particulier la législation militaire et sa reconstruction historiographique. Principalement centré sur la période des XVIe-XVIIIe siècle, dans un dialogue constant entre historiens et juristes, le séminaire ne se privera pas d’ouvrir vers d’autres champs de la recherche.

Cette rencontre scientifique propose de réfléchir à travers deux axes fondamentaux : premièrement, les modalités selon lesquelles les conceptions corporatives et juridictionnelles traditionnelles du lien social dans la monarchie traditionnelle espagnole sont adaptées, juxtaposées, contrastées, etc. avec l’imaginaire éclairé et libéral, à partir du XVIIIe siècle et tout au long du XIXe, sur le plan institutionnel, normatif et discursif. Deuxièmement, les réappropriations, réinterprétations et usages –intentionnels ou naïfs – de ces termes par les sujets ; usages qui ont complexifié le réseau de relations traditionnellement décrit par l’historiographie en termes de résistance à la formation d’une nouvelle conception de l’autorité publique légitime.

La place de l’histoire du droit et des institutions dans les pensées libertaires
Les penseurs libertaires et anarchistes dans leurs réflexions politiques ont eu à cœur d’évoquer le droit et d’appréhender son histoire. Mais, face à une conception du droit fondée sur une acceptation, plus ou moins consciente, de la notion d’État, sanctionnant le droit via une violence légitime dont il a le monopole, ils ont recherché dans les marges, temporelles et spatiales, les formes de droits non étatiques, ce « ius » qui n’était pas lex. À cette occasion, ils se sont tournés vers l’histoire, et particulièrement l’histoire du droit et des institutions, et les autres sciences de l’homme, anthropologie et ethnologie, appliquées aux concepts juridiques. C’est la place de ce regard, vers le passé ou vers les marges contemporaines, et sa méthode au sein des pensées libertaires que nous souhaitons interroger.

The Research Training Group (RTG) examines the politics of the Enlightenment from the 18th century to today. Its approach is twofold: firstly, it asks – in terms of the genitivus subjectivus – how both the historical Enlightenment of the 18th century and also later Enlightenment enterprises think and act in a political sense. Secondly, it questions – in terms of the genitivus objectivus – how the conception of Enlightenment is constructed and perpetually renewed through political aims and decisions: How does the Enlightenment shape politics? And how do politics shape the Enlightenment?

1715-1716: The Apex of Jacobitism?
Origins, Representations, and Legacies: Essays in Honour of Daniel Szechi
This collection of essays, entitled ’1715-16 : The Apex of Jacobitism ? Origins, Representations and Legacies’, in honour of the life work of Professor Daniel Szechi aims to re-evaluate the 1715 rising in its broader international context and within the heritage of the long eighteenth century. Contributors who have encountered the Jacobite rising in their respective fields, for example, while studying its industrial, intellectual, and scholarly impact from the Treaty of Union to the present, are invited to propose their contributions. As Jacobitism was a ubiquitous landmark of the eighteenth century, researchers are invited to question the military, political, literary, and/or cultural significance of the rising. The editors are particularly interested in consequential research on the rising through a comparative perspective in the interdisciplinary fields of literature, material culture, and travel or media studies.

Strangers and foreigners: hospitality and hostility in Britain, France, and Germany, 1680-1850
The ongoing wars and migrations have foregrounded the issue of the hosting of migrants and the duty of hospitality. This international Early career symposium aims to explore the relationship to foreigners in Germanophone areas, France and Britain (including colonial spaces) from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), which provoked international migrations of Protestant refugees, to the revolutions of 1848, which were characterized both by internationalist fervour and by political exiles.

Pour une lecture interdisciplinaire
L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est de sonder, à partir d’échanges interdisciplinaires, les apports de l’édition numérique de la correspondance générale de Mme Du Deffand. Alors que l’équipe e.DuDeffand achève l’inventaire des quelque mille cinq cents lettres composant ce corpus, nous souhaitons nous interroger sur le potentiel du support numérique et de sa dimension multimédiatique, ainsi que sur celui du rassemblement d’ensembles épistolaires ayant été, pendant plus de deux siècles, édités de façon fragmentaire ou isolée.
