The history and structure of gardens hold endless surprises and fascinating connections with other disciplines. Originally created as a natural but immutable place offering protection and shelter, gardens have evolved from the hortus conclusus to a place of fantastic architecture, celebrations and wonder. Despite the aesthetic development that was added to the symbolic one of the medieval tradition, the garden never completely lost its medicinal and practical function, featuring areas dedicated to fruit trees, greenhouses reserved for exotic crops or plants whose medicinal or dyeing properties were well known.

Les clichés de la folie. Histoires des usages de la photographie en psychiatrie (XIXe-XXe siècle)
Ce colloque se propose d’explorer les interactions entre photographie et psychiatrie dans une approche pluridisciplinaire sur près de deux siècles. Que ce soit comme outil documentaire et journalistique, instrument de diagnostic, support pour la formation ou médium artistique, la photographie a trouvé de multiples usages en psychiatrie, soulevant au passage des questionnements tant éthiques qu’épistémologiques, qui seront au cœur du colloque.

Favoring an interdisciplinary approach inspired by Aby Warburgh, specialists, historians and art historians, philologists, philosophers and gemologists, will share their groundbreaking research on the history of precious arts, gemstones, craftsmanship and finery, between Baroque and Rococo periods.

Elle fera intervenir des chercheurs et des conservateurs en prise avec ces questions, qu’ils soient usagers ou gestionnaires de ces collections.

Les institutions d’enseignement supérieur conservent de très nombreux objets ayant été utilisés dans le cadre des activités d’enseignement et de recherche qu’elles ont hébergées au cours de leur histoire. L’intérêt pour ce patrimoine ne cesse de croître ces dernières années et participe d’un mouvement plus large de patrimonialisation des collections et des bâtiments universitaires, qui semble lui aussi avoir connu une accélération au tournant du XXIe siècle. Le numéro 32 de La Revue de la BNU sera consacré au nouveau regard porté sur ces objets et à son inscription dans le cadre d’une histoire de l’enseignement et de la recherche.

Conservation-restoration of embroidered textiles from the Renaissane to the 19th century
Technè, n°60, 2025-2
The study of embroidered textiles presents several points of interest: research may focus on the embroidery itself (materials, techniques, patterns), its supporting medium (nature, composition of materials, type of weaving), as well as the relationships between these two fields. We aim to identify topics of discussion by juxtaposing ancient texts with materials analysis; to present examples of the conservation of embroidered textiles with an emphasis on the choice of technical protocols; and to consider the difficult problem of exhibiting these rare and precious textiles.

Colloque anniversaire en hommage à l’abbé Rousselot
De la création au rayonnement de la phonétique expérimentale
Ce colloque a pour objectif de célébrer le centième anniversaire de la mort de l’abbé Rousselot (1846-1924), le fondateur de la phonétique expérimentale en France. Il nous apparaît en effet essentiel de célébrer cet anniversaire par l’organisation d’un colloque rendant hommage à cette grande figure de la phonétique, car les retombées de ses travaux sont considérables encore à l’heure actuelle. Le colloque sera l’occasion de présenter, à travers les communications de spécialistes du domaine spécialement invités pour l’occasion, les contributions de cet éminent personnage, ses rapports avec ses contemporains, les inventions techniques qu’il a réalisées dans le domaine de la phonétique expérimentale, puis d’évoquer ses successeurs et l’influence de ses travaux aux niveaux national et international, et dans d’autres disciplines jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

The challenges of historical and biomedical research in medical collections and biobanks
In the context of the Neverending infectious diseases project, we have been confronted with the challenges of using a historical medical collection for biomedical research. Historical collections have a rich potential for current and future research, but their use is far from straightforward. This is a relatively unexplored topic and as such, this workshop proposes to take concrete situations into account in order to consider the status of historical medical collections and consider them from medical, historical and social science perspectives.

Collecting, Growing, and Exploring in Early Modernity
This workshop aims to focus attention on the collections of naturalia, on the one hand, and on the attempts to grow exotic plants in Europe and the adventurous journeys that the search for tropical plants and animals they encouraged, on the other. The organizers of this workshop invite interdisciplinary contributions addressing the topic from the perspective of each discipline, from art history to material culture, from botany to gastronomy, from travel literature to cartography. Proposals that feature a female figure as protagonist are particularly encouraged, as the importance of the female contribution to this topic, although demonstrated, remains under-researched and under-published.

Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration - Postdoc position
The Laboratoire d’études et de recherche sur le monde anglophone, Aix-Marseille University (AMU), is shortly to commence a major academic research project, “Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration” (MaILHoC). Working with partners in the UK, Spain, and Norway, the aim of the project is to explore the impacts of industrial patronage – with a particular focus on the ethical dimensions of this relationship – on European museums of science and industry in both comparative and historical context. The project will compare insights drawn from a wide spread of historical case studies with a range of contemporary workshops exploring the ethics of industrial patronage. This position is based at AMU’s Humanities Faculty in Aix-en-Provence. The successful candidate will carry out research in archives in France and Britain while also participating in events organised by the various partners.

Journées d’étude sur la photographie interférentielle
À l’Institut de physique de Lille, au début du XXe siècle, Auguste Ponsot cherche à améliorer le procédé de photographie directe des couleurs de Gabriel Lippmann, qui obtiendra le prix Nobel de physique en 1908 pour sa méthode interférentielle. Les 15 plaques d’Auguste Ponsot, parvenues jusqu’à nous avec leurs remarquables couleurs, sont une étape nouvelle dans l’histoire de la photographie interférentielle. Cette manifestation a pour objet de favoriser la rencontre entre les chercheurs, les historiens, les scientifiques, les artistes, la communauté universitaire, la communauté internationale et le grand public, pour faire connaître ce patrimoine, cette technique oubliée et les enjeux de son actualité.

Matières noires : sens et substances
Le numéro 55 de la revue Technè présentera un dossier intitulé : « Matières noires : sens et substances ». La couleur noire a déjà été analysée dans des ouvrages ainsi que dans le cadre d’expositions sans que sa matérialité ait toutefois été abordée en détail. Pourtant, si certaines couleurs ne prennent pas de pluriel, le noir assume bien le sien car il est des noirs et des matières noires. Le numéro souhaite offrir une vision matérielle aussi exhaustive que possible des objets et des corpus patrimoniaux noirs par (i) nature, (ii) transformations intentionnelles, et (iii) altérations afin d’identifier et de mettre en exergue des matériaux et des substances derrière la dénomination générique « matière noire » souvent évoquée sur les cartels, les fiches d’objets et dans les interrogations des chargés de collections.

International workshop
Our workshop aims to shed light on the various actors and institutions who shaped the field of prehistory from the 19th century until our days. They will allow us to grasp the establishment and development of prehistoric international and local networks on the longue durée. We encourage participants to address the socio-political and cultural contexts in which prehistory was practiced and knowledge produced. Many answers to the above questions and topics of research may be uncovered in personal, institutional, and administrative archives, while others are revealed in excavation reports. This brings us to the last section of our workshop: what sources for the history of Prehistory and how can they be used? Has the writing of a renewed history of the discipline affected today’s research and how?

Studying medieval buildings (1850-1950)
Actors, stakes and methods
The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.
