  Residues of the Past: (De)constructing urban histories

  2023 IRS Summer School

  The focus of the summer school is to examine how historical strata have been understood, constructed, and interpreted in different European cities from the post-war period to the present day. On the one hand, the participants will learn how historic buildings were integrated into the post-war reconstruction plans on both sides of the “Iron Curtain”. On the other hand, we will discuss how historical authenticity has been established in the preservation of monuments and what might have been overlooked in the process. Finally, participants will debate how people (individually and in groups) remember and what this means for our understanding of the past. The students should also investigate how digital methods can help to understand today’s memory landscapes.

  Call for papers - Urban studies

  Undergound Atmospheres. Renewing the debate

  This special issue of Ambiances aims to highlight shared topics and possible bridges between actors who usually operate on different scales. We encourage reflections questioning the stakes and methods of the construction of inhabited space in its verticality by reintroducing the question of the underground, not as a soffit but as a living and evolving interface. The issue invites researchers, practitioners of the operational world and designers from different fields, who will share their work on the questions of undergrounds and ambiances – built, experienced and lived by humans – by highlighting case studies, in-situexperiences and new methodological tools. This call is organised around three, non-exclusive thematic lines open for articles from urban studies, architecture, engineering, humanities and social sciences.

  New Approaches

  Si la foule a longtemps constitué un thème de prédilection pour les sciences humaines et sociales, c’est sans doute moins parce qu’elle excitait la curiosité de ceux qui auraient été enclins à y voir l’esprit d’un peuple ou le reflet d’une civilisation, que parce que son surgissement sur la scène politique et sociale suscitait soit une forte inquiétude, soit de vifs espoirs. De fait, la moisson historiographique est riche quant aux études des foules à des moments cruciaux de l’histoire (des travaux de George Rudé aux travaux hexagonaux plus récents sur les manifestations de rues ou sur les barricades), mais les approches diachroniques sur le long terme, permettant le cas échéant de dépasser les périodisations conventionnelles et de nouer un dialogue fécond avec les autres sciences humaines et sociales, manquent singulièrement à l’appel.

  Mobilités spatiales et fluidités sociales

  Mobilités, identités, altérités

  Le huitième colloque du groupe de travail « Mobilités spatiales et Fluidités sociales » (GT23) de l’Association Internationale des Sociologues de Langue Française (AISLF) se tiendra à Rennes les 13, 14 et 15 mars 2008. Ce colloque centré sur la thématique « Mobilités, identités, altérités » est envisagé comme une rencontre interdisciplinaire visant à faire dialoguer sociologues, géographes, psychologues, aménageurs, etc. ainsi que les divers acteurs territoriaux concernés dans leurs pratiques par cette thématique.
