Bone objects during the Roman and Early Byzantine periods

Ancient bone objects have been found in relatively large quantities in the entire Mediterranean, from Spain to Syria and Egypt to France, where they were manufactured between the Neolithic and Medieval periods. The art of carving animal bones involves especially antler and horn. However, the spectrum of the worked bone objects recovered from Anatolia, rest of the eastern Mediterranean, Near East, the Black Sea area and Balkans is very varied, and reflects different characteristics of Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine daily life. In these areas they were also utilised as grave goods secondarily. They were exported or imported over the entire ancient Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine worlds. In this conference papers dealing with ancient artefacts or objects manufactured by bone, antler, ivory, animal teeth, mother of pearl and cockleshell are included. Focus will be on bone objects between the first century B.C. and the sixth century A.D.

Jocelyne Saab, reporter, cinéaste, au service de l’histoire

Ces deux journées d’études seront consacrées à l’œuvre de la cinéaste libanaise Jocelyne Saab (1948-2019), de ses premiers documentaires à ses dernières œuvres de photographe. Elles ont pour ambition d’investiguer plusieurs thèmes marquants qui traversent le travail de Saab, parmi lesquels les rapports entre histoire, mémoire et engagement, la question des archives et de leur portée testimoniale et politique, l’élaboration d’une poétique de l’exil, qui mettra notamment en rapport les médiums cinématographiques et littéraires, mais également plastiques, relativement à l’influence de son œuvre sur les artistes contemporains libanais de l’après-guerre.

History, Philology and Archaeology of Zoroastrianism

The purpose of this workshop will be to provide a multidisciplinary approach by combining historical studies, archaeology and philology, in order to contribute to the study of the ancient zoroastrian religion, ideally outside of modern Iran and India. Nevertheless, this purpose cannot be achieved without taking into consideration and a side-by-side comparison of the data from the long-standing tradition of the mentioned disciplines, collected from Iran, India and other related regions.

From Plato to Saint Augustine to Freud, the pairing Eros / Thanatos occupies a place that is both central and multi-faceted in Western thought and art. It appears as a celebration of love as a vital energy that allows the (male) soul to escape its mortal body and reach the divine, but also as a threat when under the effect of carnal desire, or of feminine, maternal power, the soul is exhausted. This is also the case in Asian thought and art, whether in popular beliefs and images, religious icons, classical, traditional or contemporary representations.

Si l’image est un document précieux pour l’étude des sociétés antiques, les méthodes déployées pour parvenir à son interprétation sont nombreuses et disparates selon les aires chrono-culturelles. Alors que l’iconographie du monde classique est le sujet de recherches abondantes – quoi qu’inégales quant aux supports envisagés –, d’autres périodes et d’autres régions, telles que l’Orient ancien, semblent dépourvues de tout positionnement méthodologique quant à l’appréhension des images. L’objectif de cette journée d'étude est de permettre une réflexion commune sur les méthodes d’interprétation de l’image dans l’Antiquité. Il s’agit avant tout de motiver des échanges autour des différents protocoles d’étude et cadres théoriques mobilisés pour l’étude de l’image.

Thinness and slimness in Antiquity. Greece, East, Rome

This symposium will bring together researchers coming from France and from foreign countries, and from diverse backgrounds: philologists, historians (of food, of medicine), sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, literary persons, archaeologists (in particular in the domains of the bioarchaeology, paleopathology, osteology), art historians. All the aspects of the question will be analyzed. The history of the crisis in supply, the food practices of limitation under the circumstances will be approached in particular (famine, disease, diet), as the definition and the representations of the thinness and the slimness on the ancient societies, in art and literature. The approach will try to combine, even to confront, the history of mentalities and the study of the realities in Antiquity.

Dessiner l’antique au musée au XIXe siècle

Jean-Baptiste Muret (cabinet des médailles, BnF) et Jean-Charles Geslin (musée du Louvre)

Deux importants fonds de dessins témoignent de l’importance de la documentation graphique dans les collections d’antiques en France au XIX^e siècle : Jean-Baptiste Muret (1795-1860), au Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque nationale et Jean-Charles Geslin (1814-1887), au département des Antiques du musée du Louvre, ont dessiné entre les années 1830 et les années 1870 plusieurs centaines d’objets conservés dans ces institutions, mais également des œuvres d’autres musées ou possédées par des collectionneurs privés ou des marchands. Il en résulte un panorama étonnant des goûts de l’époque, des découvertes archéologiques et des destins des collections, que cette journée d’étude invite à mieux comprendre.

From religion to sanctuaries. Religious architecture in Roman and Byzantium Africa

En 2000, le Groupe de Recherche (GDR) « Cultes et sanctuaires de l’Afrique romaine et byzantine » réunissait pour quatre ans sous la direction de François Baratte des équipes de chercheurs travaillant sur l’Afrique antique, plus particulièrement sur l’actuelle Tunisie. Il nous a donc paru souhaitable, plus de dix ans après l’achèvement du GDR, de réunir les acteurs principaux de ces études en les invitant à confronter leurs points de vue sur la question des rites, de l’organisation du culte ou des édifices. Parmi les questions qu’il sera souhaitable d’aborder citons, à titre d’exemple les formes pré-romaines des sanctuaires et leur survie après la conquête, les spécificités des cultes africains, la permanence des sanctuaires païens après la christianisation de l’Afrique, la réutilisation des lieux de culte païens, les traces archéologiques des conflits entre catholiques et donatistes, les spécificités byzantines de l’architecture chrétienne d’Afrique.
