1715-1716: The Apex of Jacobitism?
Origins, Representations, and Legacies: Essays in Honour of Daniel Szechi
This collection of essays, entitled ’1715-16 : The Apex of Jacobitism ? Origins, Representations and Legacies’, in honour of the life work of Professor Daniel Szechi aims to re-evaluate the 1715 rising in its broader international context and within the heritage of the long eighteenth century. Contributors who have encountered the Jacobite rising in their respective fields, for example, while studying its industrial, intellectual, and scholarly impact from the Treaty of Union to the present, are invited to propose their contributions. As Jacobitism was a ubiquitous landmark of the eighteenth century, researchers are invited to question the military, political, literary, and/or cultural significance of the rising. The editors are particularly interested in consequential research on the rising through a comparative perspective in the interdisciplinary fields of literature, material culture, and travel or media studies.

L’expérience sensorielle dans les expositions d’art au XVIIIe siècle
Session 2 : L’expérience de la visite, du spectateur au critique
Le colloque L’expérience sensorielle dans les expositions d’art au XVIIIe siècle s’inscrit en finalité d’un projet de recherches financé par le conseil de recherche en sciences humaines du Canada (2018-2020) et mené sur la question du corps sensoriel. Il vise ainsi à définir la manière dont l’expérience du corps sensoriel des visiteurs se modèle lors de la visite des expositions d’art temporaires au moment où celles-ci émergent et s’établissent en Europe comme une pratique sociale nouvelle. Cette connaissance devrait permettre de mieux saisir le cheminement et la sensorialité inhérente des visiteurs de musées et de galeries à travers les siècles, et ce, jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Governing the Plantagenet Empire (1152-1224)
Authority and sites of power
Le vaste conglomérat de principautés territoriales hétéroclites que nous appelons, faute de mieux « l’empire Plantagenêt » est ingouvernable à cause de cette disparité même. Au sein de la maison d’Anjou ou parmi les seigneurs, les révoltes se succèdent. Elles ripostent à un gouvernement plus contraignant que par le passé. Le roi contrôle mieux l’espace, interdisant la construction d’autres châteaux que les siens ; il impose de nouveaux lieux de pouvoir ; il accroît la pression fiscale ; il lève davantage des troupes, souvent mercenaires ; il fait fi des libertés ecclésiastiques jusqu’à fomenter le meurtre de l’archevêque Thomas Becket dans sa cathédrale. Pour triompher, la royauté ne peut se contenter de la seule force physique de ses troupes. Elle doit s’imposer aussi sur les consciences, transformant sa « puissance » brute en « autorité » légitime, acceptée de tous.

Ce colloque international se propose d’étudier la nature et les fonctions des scènes de spectres dans les arts du spectacle vivant en France, en Angleterre, et ailleurs en Europe, du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle. Les apparitions spectrales pourront être envisagées dans une perspective esthétique, dramatique et/ou scénique, métathéâtrale, métaphorique, socio-culturelle, politique, philosophique, les pistes suggérées n’étant pas exhaustives.

The French Journal of Medieval English Studies Études Médiévales Anglaises is seeking submissions for its 100th anniversary issue focusing on the notion of “time”. On the occasion of its anniversary issue, the journal invites papers on the measuring of time, as well as on the marginal treatment of time in ritualized celebrations which punctuate daily life, sometimes subverting its usual hierarchies, as in the case of carnival and misrule. Papers can consider material representations of time and its measure, as well as the subtle representation of past, present and future in medieval literature: romance worlds often conflate several layers of time which coexist in the mind of the reader.

Literature, arts and societies in the British Isles, 19th, 20th, 21st centuries
Ce colloque prolonge les travaux de deux séminaires communs aux laboratoires « Cultures anglo-saxonnes » (CAS, université Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès) et Études montpelliéraines du monde anglophone (EMMA, université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3), portant respectivement sur la littérature et les arts, et sur la civilisation britannique. Son objectif sera de balayer le champ thématique ouvert par l’articulation des notions de singularité et de solidarité, de mobiliser les outils critique et théoriques nécessaires pour l’explorer, et d’affiner notre compréhension de la littérature, des arts et des sociétés des îles britanniques aux XIX-XX-XXIe siècles.

How have British artists responded to these shifting perceptions of the world around them, of this great swirling circle of life and non life in which they found – or imagined – themselves diversely positioned, for a long time at the centre, then in a more undefined place – at the margin even? How has art itself positioned itself in this newly defined environment?

This 2016 workshop on contemporary US-UK photography will take on the notion of censorship. With photography as its starting point, this edition aims to extend the debate to include the contemporary image on the whole. It is interested in the intermedial forays of other artistic forms in the practice of photographers (art installations, video and/or audio productions, performance, urban art practices, text/image interactions). How does the very artistic form/medium become in itself a means of expression and commitment when confronted with censorship, a means to create unity against censorship, a tool for identity expression of a group or of a minority, to circumvent constraints, or thrive upon these limits and generate creative impetus from them?

British site-specificity today
The series of seminars will be an opportunity for international researchers and practitioners to explore the notion of site in contemporary British art. Site often refers to public art as the broad category of art either created or exhibited outside of the museum, and which appeals to its supposed democratic quality. In the last few years, the United Kingdom has witnessed a spectacular rise in the commissioning of public art, inaugurated principally under the impulse of New Labour who in the Nineties and Noughties calibrated much of their support to the cultural industries according to their potential regenerative impact on depressed areas around the country.

Le colloque international et interdisciplinaire « Ventre et viscères: esthétique et symbolique des entrailles au XVIIIe siècle » ; "Gall and Guts: Entrails and digestion in the Long 18th Century" (France et Grande-Bretagne) aura lieu à l'université Paris-Diderot (amphi Buffon) les 21 et 22 mars 2014. Spécialistes de littérature, d’histoire et d’histoire de l'art y exploreront la permanence du paradigme de la digestion, de l'estomac et des entrailles, dont les représentations forment souvent un contrepoint à la politesse et au lien social à une époque souvent associée de manière restrictive aux nerfs et au cerveau.

Thinking and analysing the music of Benjamin Britten in the 21st century
Parmi les anniversaires célébrés en 2013 (Verdi, Wagner, Corelli, Poulenc…), le centenaire de la naissance du compositeur anglais Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) est un appel sonné aux ressources de la recherche musicologique française et internationale. Surtout connue à travers le War Requiem et les ouvrages lyriques, que les scènes françaises programment régulièrement, la musique de Britten n’a pour l’instant fait l’objet, en France, que de quelques études approfondies. Le présent colloque prend à tâche de dresser un bilan et de poser les jalons de futures analyses – qu’elles adoptent un point de vue musicologique, esthétique, analytique, ou encore une perspective historique, sociologique, ou linguistique. Possiblement adossée à la critique anglo-saxonne ou résolument indépendante, la musicologie française de Britten reste globalement à écrire.

Manufacturers and merchants : making and exporting clocks and other luxury goods in the 18th century
Roger Smith is an independent historian who was educated at the University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2006. He is chiefly interested in the organisation of the manufacture and sale of clocks, watches and related luxury articles in the eighteenth century, including international aspects like the migration of craftsmen. He has done much research into the Anglo-Swiss watchmaking firm of Vulliamy of London, and is currently working on a major study of James Cox and his competitors in the trade in clocks and watches from Western Europe to Asia. As well as publishing extensively on such topics, he has acted as historical adviser to museums and auction houses, including the loan exhibition SingSong, Treasures from the Forbidden City at the Museum Speelklok, Utrecht in 2010-11.

« Actualité du livre d'artiste depuis 1980 : Regards Croisés France / Grande-Bretagne », 28 et 29 septembre 2012, Université Saint-Etienne, Rhône-Alpes. Anne Béchard-Léauté et Valentine Oncins (Laboratoire du CIEREC, Faculté arts, lettres, langues) organisent un colloque sur « L'actualité du livre d'artiste depuis 1980 en France et en Grande-Bretagne ». Ce cadre de recherche est interculturel, comparatif et analytique des conditions matérielles, institutionnelles et conceptuelles du livre d'artiste. Sa spécificité est le dépassement des généralités historiques et définitionnelles pour se consacrer à l'étude du livre d’artiste depuis 1980 et des « motivations » de ses concepteurs. Ce colloque a pour sujet l'approche analytique et comparative des cultures, institutions, manifestations et publications réservées aux livres d’artistes – artists' books.
