At a time when ecology has become a major preoccupation and a key issue in political, economic and social terms alike, art historians have resolutely taken on the questions it raises through a profound renewal of their approach to nature. The term “figures”, in the geometrical and metaphorical sense of forms, singular historical and cultural configurations, calls for identifying, investigating and understanding the different definitions of naturalism that the history of art has produced, depending on their specific intellectual contexts.

The call for papers is now open for the new edition of the Intersections series, dedicated to the cross-disciplinary nature of urban history and the dialogue between disciplines, methods and perspectives of study. The 2026 seminar will focus on the city as seen by archaeologists: not only the ancient or medieval city, but all forms and temporalities of the urban dimension — from abandonment to processes of transformation, from continuities to industrial and contemporary landscapes.

La question de l’atelier mérite donc d’être interrogée suivant trois axes : Qu’est-ce qu’un atelier ? Comment comprendre les circulations et la transmission des savoirs sans recourir à lanotion d’atelier ? Quel est le statut du peintre et quelles collaborations sont possibles avec les autresartistes/artisans ?

Courtyards and patios in the Mediterranean
The courtyard or patio house, based on the intimate appropriation of a fragment of sky at the heart of the domestic space, is a major archetype of human habitation. Deeply rooted in Mediterranean traditions, it surprises with its longevity and its ability to generate unique expressions, shaped by the diversity of physical and cultural contexts. This archetype, which has spanned the centuries, from the ancient world to contemporary projects, continues to inspire architects, thinkers, and creators, and has regained particular relevance in light of the challenges of the 21st century, as contemporary issues invite us to rethink modes of dwelling. To explore these dimensions, the conference adopts a multidisciplinary approach structured around four cross-cutting themes. It is aimed at a diverse range of profiles—architects, historians, anthropologists, sociologists, archaeologists, artists, writers, climatologists, etc.—drawing on scientific contributions, feedback from architects, and artistic expressions.

13th International Congress of the Society for Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Archaeology
The 13th international conference of the the Society for Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Archaeology aims to examine the contributions of an archaeological approach to vernacular architecture in both rural and urban settings. The time frame covers the 15th to early 20th centuries, in a geographical area corresponding to France and its overseas “départements” and “régions”, as well as Europe more broadly.

An international conference will be held at the Royal Museum of Mariemont from 19 to 21 March 2026 in the framework of the exhibition Mary of Hungary. Art & Power in the Renaissance. The scientific meeting will bring together historians, art and architecture historians, archaeologists and specialists in literature into an interdisciplinary dialogue about curial residences in the countryside, their places in their territories, their ornamentations, the festive life organized, but also the diplomatic dealings and policies which unfolded there.

Ve Congrès francophone d’histoire de la construction
Cette rencontre s’inscrit dans la dynamique des manifestations scientifiques internationales rassemblant autour de l’histoire de la construction des praticiens et des chercheurs, des acteurs du patrimoine (collectivités, associations, etc.), des étudiants, des amateurs, des élus et des usagers. Si les thématiques traditionnelles de l’histoire de la construction sont bien évidemment abordées (matériaux, processus de construction, chantier, droit et économie, métiers et acteurs, circulation des savoirs, etc.), d’autres sujets liés au développement de nouveaux thèmes de recherche sont proposés tels que l’histoire des techniques d’entretien et de restauration et l’histoire environnementale.

La Syrie après Assad : Histoire, patrimoine et transition politique
L’histoire et le patrimoine ont toujours été des terrains d’affrontement idéologique et politique. En Syrie, le régime baathiste a instrumentalisé l’histoire pour asseoir sa légitimité, effaçant la diversité des appartenances. La chute du régime soulève des questions sur l’usage politique de l’histoire et le rôle des historiens dans cette transition. Cette journée d’étude explore comment l’histoire et le patrimoine peuvent accompagner la reconstruction de la société syrienne.

Restaurer les peintures murales du XIXe siècle à nos jours
Cette journée d’étude revient sur la question centrale de la restauration des peintures murales. Du côté de l’histoire de l’art, l’identification des restaurations se révèle parfois être un défi. Certaines complexifient la lecture de la stratigraphie lorsque plusieurs couches s’additionnent. En dépit de la réversibilité de ces restaurations et des techniques d’identification mises en œuvre pour un repérage facile, la critique d'authenticité n'est pas toujours évidente. Du côté des restaurateurs, certains s’interrogent sur les conséquences de leur restauration pour l’étude des œuvres ou demandent à mieux comprendre les scènes à restaurer. Il s’agira de tisser des liens de collaboration entre universitaires, conservateurs-restaurateurs et, dans certains cas, les acteurs de l’archéologie.

Edges of the sacred. Materializing thresholds, from Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages

Art historians and archaeologists working on sacred monuments are not only interested in the architectural forms and techniques and the painted and/or sculpted decoration: they also try to reconstruct the ceremonies and circulations that took place around and inside the buildings they study. A sacred space is defined by a material or symbolic boundary that separates the building and its surroundings from profane space. This area, which belongs to the divinity, is bounded by a set of rules and customs that govern ritual practice, which is itself closely linked to space: gestures, sacrifices, prayers and paths take place in specific locations, the identification and function of which are often specified by architecture and decoration.

Semaines d’études médiévales du Centre d’études supérieures de civilisation médiévale
Soixante-huitième édition
Depuis 1954, le Centre d’études supérieures de civilisation médiévale (CESCM) organise une session d’été interdisciplinaire et internationale de formation, qui regroupe chaque année une cinquantaine d’étudiants, doctorants et jeunes chercheurs, français et étrangers. Alternant conférences proposées par des spécialistes du Moyen Âge venus du monde entier, excursions et visites de sites, présentation de manuscrits ou de documents d’archives et découverte des ressources documentaires concernant le Moyen Âge, cette manifestation francophone, unique en son genre, a contribué à construire et à renforcer, depuis bientôt soixante-dix ans, un solide réseau national et international dans le domaine de l’étude du Moyen Âge. La session est ouverte aux étudiants de master, doctorants et jeunes chercheurs en études médiévales, toutes disciplines confondues, disposant d’un niveau de maîtrise de la langue française suffisant pour suivre conférences et visites, et participer pleinement aux échanges.

Ordonner l’Église, ordonner les églises : lieux, environnements, réseaux (VIIIe-XIIe siècle)
Au-delà des monuments prestigieux qu’étaient et sont encore les cathédrales et les abbayes, l’espace sacré s’étendait aussi aux lieux contrôlés par ces institutions, églises, paroissiales ou non, prieurés et autres dépendances ; les modalités et les conséquences de ce contrôle offrent un terrain quasi infini d’investigations archéologiques et historiques. À l’occasion de la réouverture au public de la crypte de Saint-Bénigne de Dijon, après plusieurs années de restauration et de nouvelles fouilles archéologiques, ainsi que de la mise en œuvre du projet de restauration et de réaménagement de l’abbaye Saint-Germain d’Auxerre, il est apparu nécessaire de faire le point sur cette problématique et de l’élargir à d’autres espaces étudiés par les archéologues, les historiens et les historiens d’art en France et en Europe.

Architecture of the Past: inspiration for the Future
Architecture, in response to universal needs, has developed in various forms, in diverse environments, and consequently offers a multiplicity of solutions. This diversity of construction types is of interest to numerous disciplines that do not often have the opportunity to exchange ideas. The aim of this interdisciplinary event is to bring together archaeologists, historians, architects, artisans, conservators, restorers, and ethnologists to share their work and research on architectural practices and structures that are relevant to approach current and future environmental, social, and economic challenges. This event will also discuss how the architecture of tomorrow is also invented with an eye to the past, whether it be sophisticated or vernacular, regardless of materials, period, or geographical and cultural area. A list of themes are suggested and detailed in the full call for proposal.

The conference raises problem inherent in-built heritage, which is its deterioration over time. Throughout its existence, built cultural heritage is exposed to numerous external threats (destruction, alteration, vandalism, etc.) and internal threats (wear and tear, deterioration, unhealthy conditions, etc.). This invaluable, non-renewable resource needs to be carefully documented and archived. What is the relevance and role of digitisation technologies in these practices? What technological tools do people have at their disposal to access built cultural heritage? What techniques are already being used for this purpose?

Héritages LGBTQIA+ et narrations queer : quel rôle pour les institutions patrimoniales ?
Employé historiquement en anglais comme une insulte, le terme « queer » (en français « bizarre », « hors-norme ») fait l’objet depuis plusieurs décennies de réappropriations par les minorités sexuelles et de genre, et a gagné ces dernières années en visibilité dans l’espace médiatique et universitaire. Dans le champ culturel, cet intérêt s’est traduit par la multiplication d’initiatives (expositions, colloques, etc.) inspirées des réflexions contemporaines sur la sexualité, le genre, l’intersectionnalité et la mise en récit des cultures communautaires. À travers cette journée d’étude, il s’agira d’interroger la capacité des acteurs institutionnels du patrimoine à enrichir ou valoriser ces réflexions, et à intégrer ces sujets à leurs pratiques professionnelles. Cette journée, pensée comme un espace de partage, de formation et d’échange, entend poser ces questions pour l’ensemble des spécialités patrimoniales — archéologie, archives, inventaire, musées, monuments historiques et patrimoine scientifique technique et naturel — et valoriser des initiatives institutionnelles et associatives, aussi bien territoriales que nationales et internationales.

Depuis trente ans, les Rencontres d’archéologie et d’histoire en Périgord tiennent le cap qu’elles s’étaient fixé : offrir au public le plus large le meilleur de la recherche, en France et en Europe, sur les châteaux, leur naissance, leur place et leur rôle dans les sociétés, du haut Moyen Âge jusqu’à nos jours. Pour leur XXXe anniversaire, les Rencontres prennent le large ! De port en port et d’île en île, c’est à un cabotage architectural, militaire, politique, savant et pittoresque que nous entraînera ce colloque, des rivages atlantiques et méditerranéens aux rives du Bosphore.

Troglodyte Architecture: Design, Materials, Energy and Environment
The first international congress “Troglodytic architecture: Safeguarding, valorization and sustainable development”, organized in Gafsa on December 24 and 25, 2022, dealt with several issues relating to the themes of safeguarding and enhancement of troglodyte heritage, its inscription on the Unesco World Heritage List, as well as the means and prospects of its contribution to sustainable economic and social development. In this second congress, the focus on the concepts of Design, Materials, Energy and Environment aims not only to deepen and continue the themes addressed in the first congress, but also to enrich the knowledge around the different axes that closely affect heritage in its most diversified sense.

Issue 46 of the Cahiers de Mariemont undertakes to explore the various ways in which ruins, real or fake, have been incorporated into the art of gardening. This volume therefore calls on historians, art historians, archaeologists, architects, town planners, botanists, gardeners and other garden design specialists to identify the common features and major developments in the practice of integrating and enhancing the value of ruins into European gardens over the centuries.
