Les commémorations des génocides du XXe siècle et leurs problématiques
L’Association pour la recherche et l’enseignement de la Shoah (ARES) a été créée à Marseille en 1999 par l’historienne et académicienne Renée Dray-Bensoussan. Destinée à transmettre connaissances et réflexions approfondies sur la Shoah, césure majeure de l’histoire européenne, elle a élargi son champ d’investigation aux génocides Rom, Arménien, Tutsi qui entrent dans la définition juridiquement reconnue par l’ONU et par la communauté scientifique et ce dans une démarche éthique et citoyenne. Nous nous proposons de travailler en 2026 sur la problématique des commémorations de ces génocides cités.

La dictature des Duvalier, quarante ans plus tard : mémoires, histoire, héritages
Le 7 février 2026 marquera le 40e anniversaire du départ en exil de Jean-Claude Duvalier. À l’occasion de cet anniversaire, ce colloque international se propose d’examiner les spécificités et les enjeux du régime dictatorial instauré par les Duvalier en Haïti — François Duvalier (1957-1971), puis Jean-Claude Duvalier (1971-1986). Il se déroulera les 5 et 6 février 2026 au Carrefour des arts et des sciences de l’Université de Montréal et réunira des chercheurs.euses, des écrivain.e.s, des artistes ainsi que des acteurs communautaires en articulant des savoirs académiques et des pratiques de terrain. Cet événement scientifique aura lieu dans le cadre plus large d’une semaine d’activités visant à marquer les 40 ans de la chute de la dictature des Duvalier.

Violence and Empire. From the Early 1800s to the End of the Great War
From the early 1800s, the formation, consolidation, and maintenance of empires were increasingly bound to new logics of state power, technological advancements, and legal rationalisation and justification. Despite narratives of civilising missions and administrative modernisation, violence remained a central practice of imperial rule, both as an instrument of conquest and a mechanism for governing already established colonial regimes. This conference invites historians and scholars of related disciplines to consider the various ways in which violence operated within imperial systems, how it was implemented, codified and justified legally and culturally, along with its contemporary perception in the imperial metropolis and its remembrance and subsequent legacies that continuously remain influential until the present day.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions
The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

Decoding European History through Guns: Methodologies and Research Approaches
What are firearms? How did they impact on the history of European societies? What are the more promising research approaches for studying them? Firearms hold profound implications for European societies, influencing international relations, the diffusion of violence, and State sovereignty. This workshop will convene researchers examining themes such as the relationship between European States and guns, global efforts to regulate arms markets, the role of firearms in changing the societal perception of violence, and the semantic nuances defining these instruments. Through exploration of diverse research methodologies, the workshop aims to highlight the significance of firearms as both a subject of scholarly inquiry and a lens for examining critical aspects of contemporary history, shedding new light on the European past – one trigger pull at a time.

The Aggressor: Self-perception and External Perception of an Actor Between Nations - PhD positions
The Department of History at Heidelberg University and the Faculty of History at the Ruhr University Bochum invite applications for five doctoral positions (part-time: 65%) to be filled from the winter 2023/24 within in the framework of the international research project “The Aggressor: Self-perception and External Perception of an Actor Between Nations”. The interdisciplinary project investigates the identity-forming construction of national enemy images across Europe, which are shaped by aggressors from neighboring countries. It systematizes and compares the perception and interpretation of particular enemy actors based on historical case studies, focusing on their discursive construction and changing significance in the politics of memory.

Wer ist Walter? Resistance against Nazism in Europe
The first conference in the framework of our “Wer ist Walter?”-project will include four panels on the history of resistance against Nazism and fascism during World War Two. Gathering historians, curators and other researchers from different countries, the main aims of the conference are to present and discuss new research on the history of resistance, with a specific focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France and Germany, in a comparative and European perspective, and to discuss about different understandings of resistance and about the relevance of its memory today.

Panel 15 - 6e congrès annuel de l’Association pour les études sur la guerre et la stratégie (AEGES)
L’Association pour les études sur la guerre et la stratégie (AEGES) organise la 6e édition de son congrès annuel les 7, 8 et 9 juin 2023 à Bordeaux. Cet événement se veut un espace de socialisation et de discussion scientifiques permettant de rassembler très largement la communauté des chercheur·e·s travaillant sur la guerre et la stratégie, quel que soit leur encrage disciplinaire. Les organisateurs du panel n° 15 lancent un appel à contribution sur « l’histoire et actualités des armes chimiques : des recherches impossibles ? » dans une perspective internationale et pluridisciplinaire.

The role in mediation in ending political violence
"Violence: An international journal" journal
Tôt ou tard, les expériences de violence politique s’achèvent, plus ou moins durablement, plus ou moins intégralement, qu’il s’agisse de guerre civile, de terrorisme, de guérilla, ou encore de révolution. Dans certains cas, la sortie de la violence résulte de la victoire militaire, ou policière, d’un camp sur un autre. Dans d’autres, qui sont ceux auxquels se réfère le présent appel, elle ne se comprend pas sans l’intervention d’un tiers. Les articles de ce futur dossier pourront envisager une expérience précise, ou un ensemble d’expériences comparées. Ils pourront porter sur un acteur donné : une organisation ayant fait le choix d’abandonner la lutte armée, un État médiateur, une ONG humanitaire spécialisée dans ce type de médiation, un groupe voire un individu central ; ou encore se pencher sur un aspect particulier, comme l’émergence de conjectures nouvelles, du fait des pressions de l’opinion publique, d’institutions et d’organisations internationales par exemple, ou du fait de tout autre changement politique, économique, ou sociétal.

Dans ce contexte, un appel à contribution est lancé afin d’embrasser au mieux la période révolutionnaire en Vaucluse et d’offrir un contenu scientifique supplémentaire à l’exposition.

5th International "Language and Territory" Colloquium
This multidisciplinary colloquium will discuss the different ways that languages and territories are linked, and will show the political, social and economic stakes that arise from the relationships between them. Above all, these terms refer to men and women with their social practices and representations, at the core of the logic of territoriality. New territories give rise to new language practices, which, in turn, create new spaces, discourse and meaning. The "boundaries" we draw between languages and territories are permeable in time and space, depending on factors such as population displacement, language policies, linguistic and social representations, education, mass media and socio-cultural values.

The outsourcing of much military labour – to the private sector, and to other publics – has a long-standing historical basis that raises serious questions about the relationship between war, the state and society. Yet, were the boundaries between public and private ever clear? If the global wars of the twentieth century were "total" for some belligerents, what of the millions who served for other kings, other countries and other empires prior to the emergence of the nation state? While much military history and military sociology has been written in national frames, did these frames ever adequately explain the nature of war? What of the private and supranational armies who played such important roles in the making of the modern world?

Thinking the afterwar. Latin America (19th-20th centuries)
Cette journée d’études exploratoire vise à dresser un premier état des lieux historiographique sur ces problématiques des après-guerres dans les Amériques latines, en prenant pour borne de départ la première mobilisation armée du XIXe, à savoir les invasions anglaises de 1806 à Buenos Aires, jusqu’à la guerre du Chaco (1932-1935) qui mit aux prises la Bolivie et le Paraguay. Journée pluridisciplinaire, elle sera l'occasion de faire dialoguer historiens et littéraires non seulement sur les spécificités de ces sorties de guerres américaines, mais aussi de réfléchir sur les sources disponibles pour les étudier, en particulier en ce qui concerne le XIXe siècle.

Francoism, its image and policies of influence in France (1936-1975)
Cette journée d’étude entend interroger la politique d’influence du régime franquiste en France de la guerre civile jusqu’à la fin du régime, en 1975. Il s’agit de s’intéresser à la construction de son image publique destinée à traverser la frontière pyrénéenne et à sa réception sur le sol français. Si les évolutions internes du régime franquiste (guerre civile, premier et second franquisme) ont joué un rôle déterminant dans sa politique menée en France, les évolutions sur le territoire français ont joué un rôle tout aussi important. C’est ce phénomène d’interdépendance, ce jeu de miroir entre France et Espagne, que cette journée d’étude souhaite mettre en lumière.

the Crimean War marked, with the Civil War (1861-1865), a great historical and anthropological turning point in military history, witnessing profound transformations not only in the way of fighting, but also in the relations between societies and war, during and after the conflict. This conference will aim in putting the Crimean War in this new historiographical approach to military conflicts by highlighting three fundamental aspects: The anthropological approach, the transnational dimension, the sociocultural dimension of the conflict, and its memory.

The transnational history of Germany since 1945
Ce cours hebdomadaire explore l’histoire allemande après 1945 en se concentrant sur ses dimensions « transnationales ». Ce faisant, l’objectif n’est pas de retracer toute l’histoire de l’Allemagne, de la période de l’occupation par les Alliés à celle des deux États allemands, puis à celle de la réunification et ses suites, mais de découvrir et discuter une historiographie récente, qui d’une part privilégie d’autres échelles d’analyse que celle de l’État (le local, le régional, le global) et d’autre part réfléchit aux circulations par-delà les frontières nationales.

Dans le cadre de la thématique générale « Universalités et particularités en monde juif » du programme « Judaïsmes contemporains » du groupe « Sociétés, religions, laïcité » (GSRL), cette journée d'études analysera les processus de constitution d'« archives juives » comme miroir du rapport des juifs à l'État et à la nation. En quoi la conception d'« archives juives », séparées ou au contraire intégrées aux patrimoines écrits nationaux, reflète-elle les diverses formes de l'intégration des juifs aux États-nations aux XIXe et XXe siècles ? Les différentes contributions permettront d'explorer la place des juifs dans les récits nationaux à travers la place accordée par les institutions des différents États-nations concernés au patrimoine écrit de leurs minorités juives.
