At a time when debates are intensifying on the reversal of the age curve in Europe and, more broadly, in the Western world, the notions of “youth” and “old age”, considered as social categories, strongly resurface. However, these categories—for which consensual definitions may be lacking—are far from neutral.

Plus de vingt ans après la parution décisive des Monumenta linguae Messapicae (2002), après les résultats considérables obtenus par les fouilles des dernières décennies, et après la synthèse récente de Joachim Matzinger (2019) sur la langue messapienne qui a permis de relancer sur des bases solides la discussion des inscriptions en langue locale, le colloque international « Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique » a pour objectif de faire dialoguer les épigraphistes et les linguistes spécialistes des textes en langue messapienne et les archéologues spécialistes de la culture matérielle en Messapie.

Séminaires du projet InSpectA
Le projet InSpectA (Intelligences et sens des spectateurs dans l’Antiquité) vise à faire émerger une nouvelle méthodologie interdisciplinaire pour mieux comprendre les réponses sensorielles, émotionnelles et cognitives suscitées par le spectacle théâtral dans l’Antiquité, en les replaçant dans le cadre d’une histoire des sens, des émotions et de la cognition. Il est financé par l’ENS de Lyon et le laboratoire HiSoMA, Histoire et sources des mondes antiques (UMR 5189) et coordonné par Anne-Sophie Noel (ENS de Lyon – HiSoMA).

Diritto e Ritualità
The full online seminar “Diritto e Ritualità” 10-11 November 2021 will focus on questions of Greek law and ritual forms in the ancient world, investigated through the lens of anthropology. We will explore the relationship between rhetoric and law, the evidence of judicial practices in literary sources and some issues related to the analysis of specific epigraphic sources (defixiones and prayers for justice). In the second day, we will try to put some ritual forms of the ancient world into context. In particular, we will investigate the function of knucklebones in Greek sanctuaries and the relationship between the ludic dimension and the ritual one. Late antique adoratio will also be discussed in light of the most recent theories developed by Anthropology and Ritual Studies.

Untranslatables of Antiquity: from Philosophy to Historical Anthropology
Translating is an act of opening oneself, mutual exploration and intercommunication between two cultures, allowing for the transfer of a semantic concept from a language to another. Moreover, this process has to meet several needs and practices, both different and contradictory. Thus, whatever it is the principle applied in the process, resulting in a translation either very close to its original source [Berman 1984] or adjusted to the rules of the target language [Eco 2007], translating demands to adapt and transform the semantic core. Once a word, or a category of words, is transferred from a linguistic system to another, this process brings about a semantic shift which makes the word itself an “untranslatable”. These “untranslatable” words can be provided by different sources, such as manuscript transmission, epigraphy, numismatic and modern literatures.

Les pratiques antiquaires, dans leur ensemble, ont depuis leurs origines, nécessité le recours à la description iconographique pour archiver, inventorier et classifier les productions matérielles du passé. Le croquis, le dessin, l’estampage, la photographie ont ainsi accompagné la diffusion du savoir archéologique et entraîné une mutation des pratiques exploratoires, dont les méthodes ont mis des siècles à se mettre en place, pour arriver a la création d’une discipline archéologique structurée. À cet égard, l’archéologie, en tant que science moderne, s’est en grande partie fondée sur ce système d’enregistrement des données, faisant passer l’homme de terrain d’un simple chercheur de trésor à « l’homo archeologicus » (A.Schnapp). C’est donc cette volonté d’archivage visuelle qui a permis de poser les fondements d’une approche de plus en plus précise et rationnelle des vestiges archéologiques, en explorant leurs natures, leurs formes, leur chronologie et leur contexte de production.

Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

The ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182) offers a funded PhD position in the field of History of Ancient Religions, to be filled by 1 October 2019 for a period of 36 months in Toulouse (France). The project will deal with a significant corpus of inscriptions coming from the Greek colonies founded in the East, between Syria and the Indus, and providing evidence on the presence of Greek and non Greek gods.

Hosted by EAGLE Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy, École Normale Supérieure and Collège de France, Chaire Religion, institutions et société de la Rome antique, it is the second in a series of international events planned by this European and international consortium. The conference will be held September 29-30 and October 1, 2014, in Paris. Keynote lectures will be delivered by Susan Hazan (The Israel Museum), Tom Elliott (New York University) and Thomas Jaeger (European Commission).

Leaving a mark: seals and their use
Around the Anglo-Norman space
L’espace normand et anglo-normand, au sein duquel les pratiques sigillographiques furent aussi originales que diversifiées durant l’époque médiévale, sera privilégié, mais on souhaite ouvrir la réflexion à d’autres espaces, européens et méditerranéens, et à d’autres périodes, notamment à l’Antiquité hellénistique et romaine. Le colloque sera également l’occasion de réfléchir au devenir des collections anciennes (matrices, empreintes, moulages), de faire le point sur l’état de la documentation disponible, sur les inventaires en cours et sur les projets de numérisation et de restauration entrepris récemment, en France et à l’étranger. La multiplication des opérations archéologiques durant ces dernières décennies et l’essor de la détection en Europe de l’Ouest ont également renouvelé l’approche traditionnelle du sceau, tant en ce qui concerne certains types d’empreintes (sur argile ou sur métal) que les matrices.

La rencontre qui se tiendra à Besançon les 26 et 27 novembre 2010 est ouverte à toutes les personnes souhaitant poursuivre différemment les recherches sur l’Asie Mineure ancienne, dans un esprit collectif et positif. En effet, il s’agira de discuter la mise en place de l’Atlas historique et archéologique de l’Asie Mineure antique et son lancement effectif. Après avoir effectué un point détaillé sur l’actualité scientifique, les discussions porteront sur l’organisation scientifique du projet, sur les futures perspectives de recherche, mais aussi sur tous les partenariats envisageables. Cette rencontre fera ensuite l’objet d’une publication aussi rapidement que possible.
