Comment repenser l’Italie antique ?
Constructions historiographiques et décloisonnement méthodologique
Ce colloque s’inscrit dans une démarche méthodologique très actuelle dans les recherches sur l’Italie ancienne. En effet, traditionnellement, les études sur l’Italie antique sont marquées par un important cloisonnement des thématiques de recherche et des disciplines, issues de traditions académiques ancrées dans le temps. L’étruscologie, l’étude de la Rome républicaine, celle du monde magno-grec et celle des sociétés dites « pré-romaines » forment ainsi des domaines d’étude généralement distincts, qui ne communiquent et ne se nourrissent que trop peu. De même, l’histoire de l’art, l’archéologie, l’épigraphie et la linguistique restent trop souvent les disciplines de quelques spécialistes, qui gagneraient à dialoguer davantage.
Par ailleurs, l’Italie dite « pré-romaine » a longtemps été abordée dans la perspective des études sur les deux civilisations classiques que sont la République romaine et le monde grec colonial, avec un point de vue extérieur et un regard souvent essentialisant. Le colloque s’inscrit dans la démarche scientifique qui amène à repenser les études des sociétés de l’Italie antique, dans une perspective de décloisonnement disciplinaire et méthodologique.
Il impliquera des chercheur.se.s de renommée internationale et des doctorant.e.s ou jeunes docteur.e.s spécialistes des peuples italiques.

The conference “Archaeology Gone Astray: Forgeries, Misinterpretations, and Other Field Stories” is dedicated to the less glorious—but undeniably fascinating—chapters in the history of archaeology. We’ll delve into everything from notorious forgeries and spectacular blunders to interpretive dead ends and moments of… let’s say, excessive enthusiasm in the field.The event offers a space for reflection, self-reflection, and a bit of humor—because, like any living science, archaeology sometimes takes a wrong turn. Yet, even when it goes astray, it always leads to something interesting.While the main theme centers on the field’s twists, turns, and detours, the program will also feature an open session for participants who wish to present their current research projects.

For a world history of the circus from Antiquity to the present day
For the past twenty years or so, the history of the circus has benefited from an undeniable scientific dynamism. While the circus is essentially an international art form, until now its history has mainly been written from a national perspective. The aim of this conference is to decompartmentalise these historiographies by inviting researchers in history and, more broadly, in the arts and the social sciences (performing arts, art history, sociology, anthropology, etc.), as well as those involved in the artistic and cultural world, to combine their approaches.

Bringing together specialists of the Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Greek worlds, this international congress will discuss the appearance during the Iron Age I-II of new figures of power and of power management, opposing or presenting political alternatives to the ideologies and socio-economic functioning of the dominant power systems, thus leading, at times, to significant political changes. The debate may highlight the transformative capacity of ancient political systems, going beyond the usual opposition between the extreme conservatism recognized in Near Eastern despotisms, centralized but also often imperialist, and, on the other hand, the evolutionary tendency attributed to the political systems of the Greek world.

For a world history of the circus from Antiquity to the present day
The aim of this conference is to decompartmentalise these historiographies by inviting researchers in history and, more broadly, in the arts and the social sciences (performing arts, art history, sociology, anthropology, etc.), as well as those involved in the artistic and cultural world, to combine their approaches. This conference sees itself as a first step towards a world history of the circus, while being aware of the limits of such an undertaking. The historiography of the circus is recent, and many aspects remain unexplored. There is a lack of works that build bridges between different national histories. Moreover, some of them have not yet been written. The history of the circus in certain regions of the world and at certain periods remains largely unknown. Consequently, papers taking a local approach may be proposed if they draw attention to these areas where the history of the circus has yet to be written. However, the emphasis will be on comparative or connected, global or even worldwide approaches. The aim will be to highlight intercultural dynamics rather than local particularities.

Flatterie et flatteurs dans les sociétés anciennes
Pratiques, personnages et interprétations
Le colloque est consacré à l’étude du comportement qui consiste à adresser à autrui des propos jugés excessivement louangeurs par des observateurs extérieurs, qui l’attribuent à une arrière-pensée intéressée : il s’agira d’examiner comment ce type de rapport à l’autre (κολακεία ou adulatio, typique des κόλακες ou adulatores) s’est manifesté et a été perçu par les penseurs, philosophes, historiens, orateurs et poètes, en Grèce et à Rome. On s’interrogera sur les dimensions morales qui motivent le jugement globalement négatif des Anciens, sur son contexte d’appréciation et sur la relation entre flatteurs et flattés. L’étude de ce comportement offre ainsi, dans le champ de l’histoire des mentalités, une forme d’approche des sociétés anciennes, au croisement des recherches sur la morale, l’identité, la sociabilité et les formes de pouvoir.

Il Convegno Internazionale «Tradizione e nuovi auctores della Tarda Antichità» mira ad esaminare le dinamiche di interazione, ripresa e ricezione di testi tardoantichi nella produzione di autori coevi o di poco posteriori. La cultura tardoantica è ossessionata dal rapporto con il proprio passato e con il patrimonio culturale percepito come autenticamente romano. Ciò porta a una ripresa costante dei testi della tradizione letteraria, la cui conoscenza assume un valore identitario forte.Tuttavia è innegabile che, accanto ai grandi autori del passato, si affermino quali nuovi modelli scrittori la cui auctoritas si impone quando sono in vita o poco dopo la loro morte, tanto da determinare le scelte letterarie di intellettuali coevi o di quelli dei secoli successivi.

Loin d’être isolés, les mondes antiques étaient parcourus par des échanges divers, compris comme des actes de réciprocité visant à donner et recevoir des biens, des denrées, des prestations, des savoirs voire des personnes, entre plusieurs parties. Cette journée d’étude vise à revenir sur la variété des échanges, dans leurs dimensions économique, mais aussi politique, culturelle, sociale ou même religieuse, souvent imbriquées dans les sociétés antiques.

Práticas da História is an open-access, bi-annual online academic journal, and it is looking to publish original articles, bibliographical essays, interviews, and book reviews on the subject matters of historical theory, historiography, methodology, and the uses of the past. We encourage submissions in Portuguese, English, French, or Spanish. The journal attaches equal importance to research relating the practice of history with other domains of the humanities and to works debating history in the context of the social sciences. While we find ourselves in the disciplinary field of history, we do aspire to question the boundaries of the field. It is our goal to promote interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity.

La connaissance des villes de l’Antiquité tardive a longtemps souffert d’une double difficulté. D’une part, leur histoire fut longtemps mal comprise. Grâce aux renouvellements historiographiques des dernières décennies, on sait aujourd’hui que ce n’est plus le déclin mais la transformation voire la continuité qui caractérisent l’histoire de la ville tardive. D’autre part, les vestiges de ces villes, souvent constitués de spolia et jugés moins significatifs et moins esthétiques, que ceux de la ville du Haut Empire, ont été négligés voire simplemente démontés et dégagés sans enregistrement. Le renouveau des études sur l’Antiquité tardive a permis aujourd’hui d’attirer également l’attention sur cette ville tardive et la nécessaire valorisation de ses vestiges.

Figures, Trends, and Perspectives (International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences - IUPPS 2023 conference)
Since several decades, historians and sociologists of science scrutinize the history of science as a practice. References demonstrate, first, the relevance of investigating who are the writers of disciplinary histories and what are the uses of these histories and, second, archaeologists’ concern to this regard. This session organised by the “History of Archaeology” commission is intended to strengthen these studies from the case of archaeology.

Public History in European Historical Perspectives
According to international literature, public history emerged as a subfield of history in the United States in the 1970s. University programs, conferences, journals, grants, and networks of public history indeed flourished in North America in the last 50 years. However, some public historical practices have existed in Europe - without bearing the name of public history - long before the institutionalization of the field in the 1970s. It is this long history of public historical practices in Europe that this international conference aims to uncover. Proposals covering a wide range of public historical practices from different time periods (including Antiquity, Middle-Ages, and pre-Modern times) are welcome.
