Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy
Under the aegis of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project “Animals in Philosophy of the Islamic World,” a conference will be held at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, on the topic of Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy. We welcome proposals for papers on any topic relevant to animals and philosophy in ancient Greek and Roman and medieval (Byzantine, Islamic, or Latin Christian) philosophy. Relevant topics could include, but are not limited to, Aristotelian zoology and its reception, theories of animal soul and cognition, views on how animals should be treated, and ideas about animals in medicine and other sciences.

This International Conference is entirely devoted to the Mirabilia, a collection attributed to Aristotle since Antiquity, which has probably be composed in the intellectual environment of the Peripatos. Our aim is to provide new insights into this little-known work, which is still historically the first example of what has been called Paradoxography. More precisely, the discussions will deal with the structure of the collection and its epistemology, with its relation to contemporary knowledge – from History to Literary Criticism –, and with its connection with the research led by Aristotle and his pupil Theophrastus.

Histoire et épistémologie des savoirs et des idées aux origines de l’écologie (HESIODE)
Réflexion sur la réception et l’influence de la pensée grecque ancienne dans les sciences contemporaines
Ce séminaire permettra de constituer un groupe de travail pluridisciplinaire sur les représentations grecques des rapports de l’homme à la nature et leur réception de l’Antiquité à nos jours. Il s’agira d’intégrer au sein du projet, dans une perspective fédératrice et complémentaire, des chercheurs de disciplines différentes, en tenant compte des travaux déjà effectués par chacun d’eux dans le champ d’étude envisagé, et d’établir des liens aux niveaux national, européen et international avec des chercheurs, des laboratoires de recherche ou des instituts travaillant sur la même thématique. Il permettra de nourrir la réflexion sur les représentations et les pratiques anciennes, et en particulier grecques, du rapport de l’homme à la nature dans toutes leurs nuances et leur complexité.

Denunciation or dissimulation? Medical error in the Antiquity and Middle Ages

Médiator, Dépakine, Thalidomide, sang contaminé, prothèses mammaires… les scandales sanitaires de ces cinquante dernières années ont régulièrement concentré l’attention générale sur le problème du risque médical. Les nombreuses questions qu’ils ont soulevées, abondamment relayées par les médias, nous montrent à quel point la question de l’erreur médicale est cruciale et complexe. Mais avant de devenir scandale, l’erreur médicale est aussi un risque inhérent à la pratique de la médecine, et cela depuis qu’elle existe. Une erreur dans le diagnostic, dans le pronostic ou dans la thérapeutique, aussi minime soit-elle, peut avoir des répercussions désastreuses pour le médecin et le malade si elle n’est pas repérée et corrigée. Loin de la médiatisation que peuvent connaître les scandales sanitaires d’aujourd’hui, quel est donc le statut de l’erreur médicale dans les médecines anciennes et quels sont ses enjeux ?

The seminar Rencontres d’histoire et philosophie des sciences aims to promote a history and philosophy of science in which, in the words of Aldo Mieli (1935), “the unity of scientific thought” is “brought to the forefront, in relation to the multifaceted developments of particular sciences”. In order to do this, it seems imperative to us to involve all those who have an interest in the history and philosophy of science in its most diverse expressions in order to consolidate a community which, to exist, must regain its collegiality.

Les pratiques antiquaires, dans leur ensemble, ont depuis leurs origines, nécessité le recours à la description iconographique pour archiver, inventorier et classifier les productions matérielles du passé. Le croquis, le dessin, l’estampage, la photographie ont ainsi accompagné la diffusion du savoir archéologique et entraîné une mutation des pratiques exploratoires, dont les méthodes ont mis des siècles à se mettre en place, pour arriver a la création d’une discipline archéologique structurée. À cet égard, l’archéologie, en tant que science moderne, s’est en grande partie fondée sur ce système d’enregistrement des données, faisant passer l’homme de terrain d’un simple chercheur de trésor à « l’homo archeologicus » (A.Schnapp). C’est donc cette volonté d’archivage visuelle qui a permis de poser les fondements d’une approche de plus en plus précise et rationnelle des vestiges archéologiques, en explorant leurs natures, leurs formes, leur chronologie et leur contexte de production.

The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Mediator, Depakine, Thalidomides, contaminated blood, breast implants... health scandals over the past fifty years have regularly focused general attention on the problem of medical risk. They have raised many questions, abundantly relayed by the different media, showing us how crucial and complex the question of medical error is: where did the error come from? But before becoming a scandal, medical error has also been an inherent risk in the practice of medicine, since its very beginning. A mistake in diagnosis, prognosis or therapy, no matter how small, can have disastrous consequences for the doctor and the patient if not detected and corrected. Far from the huge media coverage of current health scandals, what is the status of medical error in ancient medicines and what are its issues?

Life and Mind. Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy
Despite the interest in exploring Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy, there has been no coordinated attempt to survey or integrate the ways in which Aristotle’s approach to understanding life, mind, and the relation between them might inform and enrich our own. The objective of this workshop is to explore the way in which Aristotelian thought can brought to bear on contemporary research on the much-debated issue of the so-called mind-body problem and on its implications for the conceptualization of notions such as that of organism, animal and human perception and action, human moral agency, and the relation between mind and life.

The example of Antiquity
Le programme DataSanté interroge les changements de paradigme et les transformations des pratiques liés à l’émergence d’une médecine personnalisée. À travers ce colloque, on se propose de mettre en perspective historique les évolutions/révolutions annoncées dans le champ de la science médicale. Il se trouve que, dès la constitution de ses premiers corpus théoriques, la médecine occidentale a été traversée par des débats et des controverses portant aussi bien sur les conditions de la pratique du soin que sur les fondements épistémologiques eux-mêmes d’une technique s’appliquant à la santé des hommes. On se propose ainsi d’interroger la permanence de certains paradigmes épistémologiques dans l’histoire de la pensée médicale et de relire les évolutions contemporaines à l’aune des premières sources théoriques.

Any proposal concerning one of the “recensions” of the Physiologus (in Greek as well as in the other ancient or medieval languages of diffusion – Latin, Armenian, Georgian, Arabic, Slavonic, Romanian ...) is welcome. The papers (in any European language) may relate to the medieval tradition and the avatars of this text / genre, and relate to philological, literary, cultural, naturalist, or iconographic aspects.
