“Colonial Communities” in the Mediterranean between Italian Unification and the Occupation of Libya
The trilingual conference “Colonial Communities” in the Mediterranean between Italian Unification and the Occupation of Libya seeks to address a still relatively unexplored topic: the study of Italian communities abroad, with particular attention to the Mediterranean world in the period between national unification (1861) and the occupation of Libya (1911). At the core of this reflection lies the close, and not merely chronological, relationship between the migratory dynamics that characterized the early decades of unified Italy and the rise of colonial expansionism. The seminar therefore aims to investigate this connection through the specific lens offered by the Italian presence in North Africa and in the Ottoman Empire before the occupation of Libya.

Attractiveness and mobility networks: seducing, welcoming and integrating
As part of the study day "Attractiveness and Mobility Networks," PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars are invited to explore the dynamics of attractiveness in individual and collective mobilities, from the Bronze Age to the modern era. The event focuses on the legal, political, and social mechanisms implemented to attract, welcome, and integrate individuals into networks. It also examines the formal and informal circulation of information, as well as the processes of community clustering. Particular attention will be given to both the successes and failures of these mechanisms of attractiveness.

Artistic Censorship and the Creation of Israel (1948-1967)
This article discusses the artistic censorship of German and Germany in Israel between 1948-1967. During these years, with various fluctuations, the Israeli Film and Theatre Review Board, the agency in charge of artistic censorship, actively censored films, plays and concerts in German. Relying on previously undiscussed archival data, the article tracks the contours of this censorship, from its adoption upon the establishment of the state, to its eventual demise after full diplomatic relations were established between Israel and West Germany.

12th Annual MUBIT Doctoral Workshop in Late and Post-Ottoman Studies
The Annual MUBIT Doctoral Workshop in Late- and Post-Ottoman Studies is a two-day workshop in Basel, Switzerland, designed for international doctoral students conducting research on the Near and Middle East. The workshop consists of a two-day, intensive program in which select students work closely with invited experts. Successful completion of the workshop entitles students to 3 ECTS credits. This year, we are thrilled to host Dr. habil. Nora Lafi of the Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin, to lead our 12th annual workshop on the topic of “The Ottoman Governance of Diversity.”

From the Grand Tour to Orient-Express: curiosity, exploration, sociability
In this colloquium, we propose to study how the travelers crossing the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, between the “Grand Tour en Orient” and the Orient-Express, were able to apprehend these countries, their inhabitants, and their past. Our aim is to explore the social representations of travelers, as well as those of the populations they visited. Without limiting ourselves to reproducing the classic schemes for understanding these discourses, indebted to Edward Saïd, we shall historicize, contextualize and define these ambivalent perceptions according to the geopolitical considerations, ideological orientations, and personal affinities of those who produced these discourses.

Ancient mosques in their spatial context
Mosques are one of the physical representations of Islam and of Muslim communities in the archaeological record. The workshop will present a number of archaeological case studies in the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and Spain between the seventh and the thirteenth centuries. Mosques will be introduced in relation to water systems and burials, to earlier and later structures, and to specific types of settlements. In particular, the workshop will treat the question of Islamization, the definitions of the term, and its validity. The event will also include launching a database for excavated mosques until the 9th century in OpenContext.org and discuss methods and approaches for open data in archaeology.

Articulating social and environmental history
Near-East, Maghreb, Africa (19th-21st century)
Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de rassembler des historien·ne·s contemporanéistes spécialistes du Proche-Orient, du Maghreb et de l’Afrique travaillant dans une optique environnementale. Si la trame politique globale de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine de ces régions est bien connue (domination impériale ottomane ou monarchique locale, tutelle coloniale européenne, accession à la souveraineté nationale), les dynamiques sociales, juridiques et environnementales sont sous-documentées. Cette rencontre ambitionne de renforcer les liens entre des « aires » habituellement séparées tout en englobant une diversité de zones climatiques et d’écosystèmes, des côtes méditerranéennes aux forêts tropicales, en passant par les milieux désertiques. Afin de permettre un dialogue heuristique, il s’agira de réfléchir plus particulièrement aux manières d’articuler histoire sociale et environnementale, à partir de cas précisément situés et dans une approche comparatiste attentive aux sources mobilisées.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

In this workshop, we aim to take the view from below and investigate in what way imperial dynamics may have affected the lifeways of people in their territories. The basic questions of this workshop are: How did the empires of the Ancient Near East affect the lives of ordinary people in their realm? To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

Dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire et comparative, notre appel à communication est adressé aussi aux chercheurs des autres spécialités et des autres périodes historiques.

Military orders and territoriality - between the East and West
Entre Orient et Occident
Nous proposons ici, non pas d’envisager une étude exhaustive et globale de la relation des ordres militaires à la territorialité, mais plutôt de réfléchir sur les dimensions qu’elle recouvre, d’essayer de discerner les particularités qui lui sont propres, les caractéristiques des implantations des ordres, variables selon le niveau d’échelle, la zone géographique et la société considérés. Afin de tenir compte de ces spécificités inhérentes au rapport, conscient ou non, que les ordres militaires entretiennent avec les territoires qu’ils occupent (envisagés dans leurs dimensions sociales, humaines, économiques, juridiques, matérielles, culturelles, etc.), même partiellement et pour une durée variable, ainsi que la manière dont leur présence s’inscrit dans ces lieux, plusieurs axes et directions, évidemment liés les uns aux autres et en interaction constante, sont soumis à la réflexion des participants.

The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium
Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du Ier millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

Despite their collapses, their effects can be felt up to the present day. The Ottoman Empire’s history is usually divided into two phases: its construction and consolidation from the 14th to the 17th century, and its decay and collapse from the 18th to the 20th century.

Gouverner en islam (Xe-XVe siècle)
La question posée en histoire médiévale au programme du CAPES et de l’Agrégation pour les sessions 2014-2016 invite à réfléchir aux pratiques de gouvernement et à la culture politique dans les espaces proches-orientaux et occidentaux du Dâr al-islâm entre le Xe et le XVe siècle. Dans ce cadre, cette journée d’études offrira quatre approches sur l’organisation et la représentation des pouvoirs dans le cadre des dynasties qui dominèrent la période, principalement au Maghreb et dans l’espace syro-égyptien. Seront notamment abordés l'implantation de l’État, aux époques almoravide et almohade, dans des terres maghrébines marquées par le tribalisme ; l’usage légitimant et symbolique de la monnaie par les dynasties pré-mongoles du Proche-Orient ; la guerre et l’organisation des armées islamiques dans le Proche-Orient de l'époque des croisades ; l’étude archéologique de la forteresse ayyûbide de Kawkab et de son territoire. La manifestation, organisée en premier lieu pour les étudiants préparant les concours de l’enseignement, est ouverte à tous ceux qu’une approche renouvelée des pouvoirs en terre d’Islam intéresse.

History and memories
Les historiographies arabes et occidentales des croisades orientales sont dynamiques. Les chercheurs explorent désormais des champs quelque peu délaissés par leurs devanciers. Ainsi, dans la lignée d’Alphonse Dupront, les croisades sont désormais plus souvent appréhendées dans le temps long, comme un phénomène mémoriel qui marqua les consciences collectives des peuples d’Orient et d’Occident. Cette journée d’étude vise à mieux comprendre, dans la longue durée, l’impact des croisades sur les hommes et les sociétés d’Occident et d’Orient. En réunissant des chercheurs occidentaux et égyptiens, elle a aussi pour objectif majeur de mettre en dialogue des historiographies de la croisade (arabe, occidentale) qui se méconnaissent. Elle est largement centrée sur l’Égypte, mais s’inscrit dans le cadre plus large du Proche-Orient : aux yeux des croisés eux-mêmes, l’Égypte et le Bilād al-Šām formaient un ensemble peu dissociable.

The Vulnerability and Marginality of Youth in the Mediterranean Basin (19th-20th centuries)
French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood
The Revue d’histoire de l’enfance “irrégulière” (the French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood) will devote its next issue to the different perceptions and management policies focused on irregular or marginal youth in the countries of the Mediterranean basin (i.e. the northern coast of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Mashriq and the Maghreb) throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Specifically, we expect that the study of the public policies adopted by the countries of the region to deal with their youth will put the hypothesis of the unity and singularity of the Mediterranean to the test: either it will allow some sort of shared approach to emerge or, on the contrary, it will expose the Mediterranean as a cultural and ideological construct.
