Translating Comics: Between Bubbles, Cultures, and Constraints in East Asia
The conference examines the challenges of comic translation at the intersection of literature, visual semiotics, and culture. It addresses difficulties posed by spatial text layout, as well as translating humor, puns, cultural references, and typographic effects. Editorial norms and censorship across different cultural contexts are also considered. The focus is on translations to or from Asian languages, particularly Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (manhua, manga, manhwa). Issues of adaptation, localization, and graphic constraints, along with the roles of editors and translators, will be discussed. Case studies of published or ongoing translations will illustrate these challenges.

Dream Balloons in China and Japan
Between the seventeenth and early twentieth centuries, dream representations in China and Japan made extensive use of speech balloons. Typically, a character has a dream that is represented within a balloon. This international one-day symposium is the second event organized within the Histoires de bulles program which aims to study the speech balloon as an object of knowledge, both in terms of its intrinsic characteristics and its visual and broader cultural ecosystem, with the ultimate goal of identifying an “economy of the balloon” and perhaps even sketching the outlines of a general theory.

Contours du wuxiapian : économies, esthétiques, théories et disséminations
Ce projet d’ouvrage se propose d’explorer les contours du wuxiapian comme genre cinématographique à la fois codifié et profondément instable, situé au croisement d’héritages littéraires, de cultures populaires et de logiques industrielles. Dans le prolongement des travaux consacrés au chanbara, il s’agit d’analyser ses formes esthétiques, ses gestes martiaux et ses dimensions politiques, tout en interrogeant ses circulations historiques, transmédiatiques et transnationales. L’ouvrage entend contribuer à l’intégration académique du wuxiapian dans l’espace francophone, en adoptant une posture théorique attentive aux médiations culturelles et aux conditions de production des savoirs.

Image et représentation du livre en Chine
Notre colloque vise à interroger la place du livre en tant qu’objet, en tant que vecteur de savoir et en tant que symbole dans la culture et dans la société chinoises. Il sera notamment intéressant de remonter à l’époque des grands Canons confucéens, mais aussi de s’intéresser à l’historiographie, de retracer les grands travaux de compilation sous les dernières dynasties impériales, ou encore de raconter les tentatives pour sauver les livres lors des campagnes de destruction des vieilleries sous la Révolution culturelle, et enfin de compiler différents récits qui rendent hommage au livre.

Migrations Est et Sud-Est asiatiques en France depuis 1860
Deuxième année du séminaire organisé par le réseau « Migrations asiatiques en France », co-animé par Simeng Wang, Miyako Hayakawa et Julien Le Hoangan. En puisant dans les méthodes diverses des sciences sociales, ce séminaire vise avant tout à introduire les étudiant·es aux histoires, connaissances clefs et travaux incontournables dans les études de migrations de l’Asie de l’Est et du Sud-Est en France. En mobilisant les recherches historiques et les enquêtes empiriques récemment menées sur le sol français, ce séminaire se propose de mettre en valeur plus d’un siècle de migrations asiatiques en France, jusqu’ici relativement peu racontées, dans une perspective comparative.

1995: a “Black Box” for Reflections on Contemporary Japan

The year 1995 is often regarded as a turning point in the history of contemporary Japan. The country suffered two traumatic shocks in rapid succession: the Kobe earthquake in January and the Tokyo subway sarin attacks carried out by the Aum Shinrikyō cult in March. It was also struck by an economic crisis following the collapse of the speculative bubble in the early 1990. Thirty years later, this issue brings together transdisciplinary perspectives—from case and comparative studies to longue durée analysis—to present a renewed understanding of 1995, reassess its importance and singularity, and confirm or challenge previous work.

Seconde journée d’étude
Le programme CartAsia, lancé en 2024 dans le cadre du plan quadriennal de la recherche de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, étudie un important corpus cartographique en provenance d’Asie de l’Est conservé dans les collections de la Bibliothèque. Mené par le département des Cartes et plans, avec l’appui de nombreux partenaires scientifiques et institutionnels en France et dans le monde, il a pour objectif de faire connaître et donner accès à cet ensemble dispersé et jusqu’ici difficile à identifier. Cette seconde journée d’étude se penche sur le corpus coréen et sur les grandes collections de cartographie d’Asie de l’Est conservées dans les institutions parisiennes.

Cette journée d’étude vise à explorer les musiques populaires à travers le prisme du genre et de l’intersectionnalité, en questionnant la manière dont les constructions sociales de genre influencent les pratiques musicales, les représentations et les contextes de performance. Dans une approche résolument interdisciplinaire, elle propose d’analyser les interactions entre musique, paroles, images, identités de genre et positionnements sociaux afin de mieux comprendre les dynamiques esthétiques et sociales à l’œuvre dans ces scènes.

This PhD project aims to document the imprints and traces of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster through mapping, using an ethnographic and semiotic approach. It specifically seeks to explore the possibility of creating memorial traces of a radioactive disaster whose main characteristic is to be invisible, odorless, soundless, intangible—in a word, imperceptible.

In 2024, the 77th Festival of Cannes' short film competition selected Amarela (2024),a film by Japanese-Brazilian director André Hayato Saito, which focuses on the experiencesof Japanese-Brazilians. This event reflects a growing interest in a diverse, transnational, andmultilingual filmography on the subject of the Japanese diaspora, particularly theJapanese-Brazilians, who are the largest group affected by return migration (or “detourmigration” (Perroud, 2007)) to Japan. This Young Researchers Colloquium aims atvisualizing and discussing that film corpus and its aesthetic, socio-historical andmethodological issues.

The Speech Bubble, Between Text and Image
This one-day symposium aims at showing the full complexity of the speech bubble, an object that has been largely neglected by research until now, and that cannot be defined solely as ‘the curve surrounding the words spoken by comic strip characters’ (Trésor de la langue française). Based on the observation that the speech bubble often also contains images and even blank spaces, and that its forms and functions vary according to the objects, periods and geographical areas in which it is present, the papers presented during this symposium propose to analyse the complex relation between speech bubble, text and image in a number of visual sources objects drawn from Japanese corpora or indirectly linked to Japan.

It engages all five senses, and not only sight as is often believed. How are these sensations conveyed to the reader in manga? What roles do images, text, narration and onomatopoeia play? These are just some of the questions this symposium aims to address.

Heritage Villages and Tourism: Local Issues, Global Experiences
In a societal context that calls for practices to be reinvented for a sustainable territorial development (Knafou, 2023), heritage villages are at the crossroads of several issues, both in terms for the actions of inhabitants and the participation of visitors and tourists. This conference, organised by ESTHUA, the National Institute of Tourism - INNTO France of the University of Angers, and ICUNA, the Joint Institute of the Universities of Ningbo and Angers, will focus on several issues relating to the heritage of villages and the challenges they face in terms of tourism, in particular: adaptation to local society, the natural, environmental and intangible dimensions of the heritage on offer, adaptation to tourist numbers and the involvement of local people in tourism development projects.

« 1995 », un point focal pour repenser le Japon contemporain
「1995年」、現代⽇本を再考するための参照点
Le but de cette journée d’étude, organisée trente ans après 1995 (année du séisme de Kōbe en janvier, des attentats perpétrés par la secte Aum dans le métro à Tokyo en mars, de la crise suivie de l’éclatement de la bulle économique...), est d’établir une synthèse sur cette année et d’en extraire l’héritage laissé dans le Japon contemporain. La journée est couplée avec celle qui précède à Paris le 20 mars : « L’héritage de l’affaire Aum à la société japonaise : trente ans après les attentats au gaz sarin du métro de Tokyo ».

Rire et littérature en Chine et au Japon
XVII-XVIIIe siècles
S’il n’est que rarement mis en avant par la recherche au Japon, le rire (warai) est omniprésent dans la tradition littéraire japonaise ancienne et y joue un rôle essentiel. Son étude permet une approche transversale de la littérature classique japonaise par-delà les frontières de genre (poésie/prose) ou d’époques (époque classique, époque d’Edo, voire époque contemporaine).
