Culture, art and prison

Ce colloque « Culture, art et prison » regroupe des interventions de chercheurs, de professionnels de la culture et de la justice et d’artistes. Ces interventions se font dans la perspective de comprendre comment se construit « l’art et la culture en détention », qui se nourrit tout autant de l’intervention d’acteurs, des lieux et des espaces, des institutions et des organisations, des objets artistiques et culturels, des discours institutionnels, politiques, médiatiques, de sens commun. L’objectif est d’identifier les médiations qui font surgir l’objet et en garantissent une vie et une visibilité dans l’espace social. In fine, c’est bien le sens social et politique de l’art et de la culture en prison, la vie de cet être culturel dans l’espace public, ce qu’il nous dit de notre modernité, qui sont interrogés.

Animal deaths in perspective

Ce numéro de Frontières entend explorer la multiplicité et les transformations des morts animales dans les sociétés contemporaines. En partant de diverses catégories d’animaux (de rente, de ferme, d’assistance, de compagnie, de spectacle, d’expérimentation, de refuge, de zoo, sauvages, « nuisibles » ou « indésirables », etc.), il s’agira d’examiner la confrontation avec différents types et contextes de mort des animaux. Les propositions pourront ainsi aborder les diverses modalités de la mort des bêtes que sont l’abattage, la chasse, le sacrifice, l’euthanasie, l’expérimentation, l’élimination sanitaire, mais aussi les situations de guerre, prédation, pratiques rituelles ou spectaculaires diverses, etc.

The symposium Video Tracing and Tracking in Digital Humanities Research explores the possibilities of using fingerprinting and video tracking technologies in this area in general and for research into the circulation and appropriation of digital audiovisual heritage in particular.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

The territories of immaterial cultural heritage

Le patrimoine culturel immatériel (PCI) est associé aux communautés qui le pratiquent plutôt qu’aux territoires sur lesquels celles-ci vivent. Pourtant, qu’il soit cartographié, inventorié ou vécu, habité, éprouvé, le territoire offre un cadre pertinent pour comprendre l’essor de l’intérêt pour l’immatérialité culturelle. Tandis qu’il est entre les mains des États depuis une dizaine d’années et connaît un certain succès public, qu’en est-il du « PCI », cette catégorie patrimoniale dont on a espéré qu’elle soit un moyen de reconnaissance de formes culturelles minorisées alors qu’elle est en même temps un instrument de contrôle, dont la saisie néolibérale, en tant qu’agent de marketing territorial, est aujourd’hui une évidence ?

What place for ethno-cultural diversity in the arts and medias?

Du 18 au 22 septembre 2017 aura lieu la deuxième édition de l'université d'été des sciences sociales de l'université Sorbonne Paris Cité. Elle interrogera la place faite à la diversité ethno-culturelle dans les arts et les médias en France. La reconnaissance symbolique par les pouvoirs publics et les institutions culturelles de formes et de pratiques naguère qualifiées de sous-, infra- ou non-culturelles (rock, bande dessinée, mode, street art, etc.) quoique toujours contestée, est en bonne voie. Ce qui l’est moins, en revanche, est la reconnaissance de la diversité ethno-culturelle de la population française et la promotion de ses minorités par le biais de la culture.

In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

What is Border Studies?

2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel

The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

Conflict and resistance in Morocco and the colonial regions - cultural approaches

Approches culturelles

La colonisation, accompagnée par un processus expansionniste d’occupation, aboutit souvent à une résistance de la part des colonisés. Ce thème a été négligé par bon nombre d’historiens à un moment où l’école des Annales décide de renoncer aux idoles de la tribu des historiens, à savoir : l’idole politique, l’idole individuelle et enfin l’idole chronologique. Les motifs de ce désintérêt à l’histoire coloniale, notamment des conflits qui l’accompagnent, sont épistémologiques, car les historiens préfèrent se consacrer aux aspects économiques et sociaux souvent délaissés par cette histoire. Au Maroc, au lendemain de l’indépendance, les historiens se sont penchés sur la réaction des Marocains à l’encontre des colons. Ils ont étudié certains aspects de la résistance ; mais ont souvent négligé les aspects culturels qui ont accompagné ces guerres. Par contre, aux Amériques, les historiens, inspirés par l’anthropologie culturelle et l’ethnohistoire, ont porté leur intention sur cet aspect.

En quoi la Méditerranée résonne-t-elle en nous ? Comment pouvons-nous incorporer son legs pour construire une relation au monde actuel. Plutôt que d’en faire un concept ou une marque, que la langue en fasse un verbe.

Above all, the call for papers emphasizes the correlation between hospitality and space. Jacques Godbout, in his article "Receiving is to give", specifies that hospitality is a "gift of space". So what are the characteristics of these given spaces? Are they permanent, temporary or transitional? Are there inherent areas of hospitality? And how are they built? From hospitals to home, what are these spaces and what is their spatial nature? And what meaning of hospitality do these spaces convey? What kind of space does hospitality produce?
