Building on the achievements of feminist approaches to migration, this call for papers invites contributions that place gender—masculinity—at the heart of their thinking. The aim of this thematic folder in preparation is to look beyond the figure of the “breadwinner” (a man who migrates to feed a family back home) in order to explore the plurality of masculinities that emerge in migration. This call for papers is open to contributions from a range of social science disciplines, dealing with a variety of historical and geographical contexts.

Migrating Off the Beaten Path. Europeans and the World at a Time of New Migratory Horizons (1750-1850)

Since 2023, the PIOMIG project “Pioneers of Global Migration (16th- 21st centuries)”, supported by the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de la Société - Sud-Est (MSHS-SE) and the Institut Convergences Migrations (ICM), has been studying so-called “pioneer” migratory phenomena, which lie upstream and on the margins of the major migratory currents already well identified in scholarly literature. After organizing a first workshop, which enabled us to better define this notion (https://epi-revel.univ-cotedazur.fr/publication/pionniers-migrations), we propose to convene a symposium on December 4, 5 and 6, 2025. This symposium will provide an opportunity to present the original material collected and analysed in recent years, and to compare it with other approaches and studies on related subjects.

Cultural heritage outreach in romance languages (CHORAL) PDH

Coordinated by the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour, CHORAL (Cultural Heritage Outreach in RomAnce Languages) is a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska Curie programme co-funded by the European Union. It is tied to the Cultural Heritage Hub, an international research network within the Unita Alliance, which structures its research ecosystem facing cultural related challenges. CHORAL aims to train high-quality international researchers and to encourage the development of interdisciplinary, international and inter-sectoral research that addresses any aspect of Cultural Heritage. The successful candidates will enrol in PhD programs under joint supervision that will require an international mobility. Choral students will benefit from dedicated events and a tailored doctoral training programme.

Islam - migration - gender

The “Islam - Migrations - Gender” workshop aims to initiate a dialogue between three fields of research that communicate little: the history of Islam, the history of migrations and the history of gender. The first is too focused on religious dimensions for some, the second is too focused on state control of migration others, and the third is too “militant” for the rest. How, then, can we write a social and cultural history of Muslims in Europe that integrates gender as a category of historical analysis and focuses on the daily lives of the actors, highlighting their “agency”?

Illiberalism, participation, and (un)mobilization

Inside activism was the subject of a profusion of studies in the 1990s and 2000s, whether in the environmental field, gender politics, or urban policy, many of which can be found in the special issue devoted to it by Politix in 2005. Although this subject has received less attention since then, it has prompted much research abroad, particularly in Latin America. This event aims to revisit the study of institutional activism by examining it in the light of diverse political contexts, particularly within the authoritarian and illiberal dynamics that shape the commitment of public agents.

The primary objective of this Frontiers Research Topic is to produce a comprehensive understanding of the working conditions, health status, and acts of resistance among undocumented migrant women. By investigating these elements, the research intends to explore the intersections of labour and health inequalities imposed on these women due to their undocumented statuses and their positioning within the lower strata of global labour hierarchies. From Revolution to Exile: Arab Diaspora Politics in a Post-2011 Context

The American sociologist, Roger Brubaker critiques the overuse of "diaspora" as a static concept, likening it instead to a fluid "category of practice, project, claim and stance." Furthermore, the literature recognizes diasporas primarily as transnational communities with multiple societal affiliations and identities. However, recent political upheavals, like the 2010-2011 Arab uprisings, have thrust Middle Eastern and North African diasporas into new contentious and repressive dynamics, highlighting their changing roles and challenges, often referred to as the "Diaspora Spring". The proposed one-day international conference aims to delve into these complexities, focusing on empirical case studies from the MENA region post-2011 to explore innovative political roles and strategies developed by diasporas in navigating their multifaceted identities and engagements in a post-uprising world.

Vulnérabilités et agentivités en Méditerranée

Dans un contexte de montée d’incertitudes sociales, économiques, politiques et environnementales, il est important de faire un état des connaissances sur leurs effets en termes de vulnérabilités. La Méditerranée en tant qu’espace historique, géographique, sociopolitique et culturel - à fois partagé et conflictuel est un laboratoire d’analyse à ciel ouvert sur cette question. Trois angles sont envisagés : territoriales et patrimoniales ; politiques, juridiques et religieuses ; sociales et corporelles. La revue encourage les approches comparées, la réflexivité sur les concepts et les démarches d’enquête empirique. Publiées en open source, les contributions futures pourront s’appuyer sur des corpus de sources détaillées.

Alors que la frontière est dépeinte comme une limite nécessaire à toute société dans une logique d’organisation et d’administration, entre inclusion et exclusion, la question des déterminants d’une frontière (géographique) est posée. La mise en place ou même bien la postérité de frontières peut être considérée comme tenant à la fois de la contingence et de la nécessité. À l’image du mythe de Héro et Léandre, et de leur amour interdit, la littérature et les arts ont souvent fait de l’eau le marqueur d’une frontière « naturelle’ et ‘émotionnelle ». Dès lors, les éléments d’ordres naturels joueraient un rôle crucial sur la destinée des Hommes et des espaces.

Decolonizing comparison

Trans-Indigenous readings of contemporary literature from Canada and the rest of the Americas

The aim of this international workshop on contemporary Indigenous literatures and literary practices in Canada and the rest of the Americas is twofold. Firstly, it lies in exploring the (potential or already existing) implications and applications of the trans-Indigenous comparative methodology proposed by Chadwick Allen in his book Trans-Indigenous: Methodologies for Global Native Literary Studies. The second aim of this workshop is to create a space in which the growing number of researchers in Indigenous studies (including doctoral and postdoctoral researchers), both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, can share their knowledge and reflect together on the possibility of contributing to the development and the consolidation of this field through the collective construction of a critical practice of trans-American Indigenous literary studies research.
