Quatre-vingt-dix ans après le surgissement de l’évènement politique, la victoire de la gauche en France et en Espagne accompagnée d’un mouvement social d’ampleur et d’oppositions virulentes, dans un contexte international menaçant, le moment est venu de regarder l’histoire et la mémoire du Front populaire à chaque échelle, du local à l’international, en s’appuyant sur les travaux les plus récents et les perspectives historiographiques renouvelées.

An ecological transition under strain: country, landscape, and uses in contemporary Germany
The starting point for this conference is the observation that the ecological transition in Germany, which one might have thought would be easier or at least more harmonious than in other countries due to the importance that environmental issues have had in German culture, society, and politics from very early on, is in fact encountering numerous obstacles and is even being called into question. This is evidenced, among other things, by the setbacks which the energy transition encounters and by the success of the party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) despite—or perhaps because of—its stance in favour of climate change denial.

Compter en situation coloniale dans l’Afrique sous domination française (1830-1962)
Appel à communication au colloque de clôture du programme de recherche COCOLE (« Compter aux colonies ») financé par l’ANR (2022‑2026) qui a étudié la fabrication et les usages de chiffres comptables et des statistiques produits par les administrations coloniales, les entreprises et d’autres acteurs dans l’Afrique sous domination française entre le début du XIXe siècle et les indépendances (années 1960). Le colloque de clôture vise à la fois à présenter un bilan des recherches effectuées dans le cadre de ce programme, à élargir les perspectives ouvertes par l’équipe et à les croiser avec d’autres regards sur les chiffres dans différentes configurations coloniales ou impériales.

Extractivist Enterprise and International Organizations (1919-1989)
Workshop and Publication
Corporate actors have played a hidden yet highly influential role in shaping the global order, often securing their interests in international organizations, such as the League of Nations and the United Nations. Extractive industries, which focus on natural resources such as oil, gas, minerals, and metals, including rare earths, were the bedrock of capitalism in the long twentieth century. How did they exert their influence within, through and against international organizations? What tools did they adopt to attain their goals at global metropoles such as Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Geneva, New York, and Santiago? Who challenged their efforts and who supported them and how? What effects did formal decolonization have on the role of extractive enterprise in these global spaces?

Invisible Actors in the Making of International Law (1750–2000)
This interdisciplinary conference invites graduate students and early career researchers to consider the genealogy of international law since 1750. It aims to identify new or unrecognised actors – including individuals, groups, and institutions as well as non-human agents – and their contributions to the practices, interpretations, and applications of international law. How did they establish or challenge norms, customs, and institutions? How were their practices, actions, and ideas shaped into law? The event aims to historicise the making of international law by bringing together junior scholars of history and law and to provide a forum for the exploration of new ideas and alternative perspectives, combining and building upon historical and social scientific approaches.

« Money, money, money » : religions, capital, finances
La question financière est l’un des lieux à partir duquel il est possible de saisir les processus de modernisation (et de résistances à la modernisation) qui touchent les religions à l’époque contemporaine. Le problème renvoie à des enjeux de natures très diverses. Se pose d’abord une question qui ressort de l’histoire économique : celle de l’argent des religions et, plus généralement, de leurs possessions. Un autre axe de recherche potentiellement fécond est celui de l’histoire des représentations. Le lien entre certaines religions et l’essor du capitalisme a ainsi pu être souligné, que ce soit pour le saluer, pour le dénoncer ou simplement pour y voir un facteur explicatif de certains processus historiques.

Il s'agit, sous un angle historique, actuel et pluridisciplinaire, de faire un état de la situation de la dette et de l'endette dans les pays de l’Afrique subsaharienne, ce phénomène étant devenu une cause importante des problèmes économliques et sociaux que connaisse ectte région du monde.

Imagining the Future of Ports in the Long Nineteenth Century
Special Issue of The Journal of Transport History
The nineteenth century, as stated by the volumes that have now become classics ofhistoriography by Christopher A. Bayly (2003) and Jürgen Osterhammel (2009), coincideswith a «transformation of the world» in a global sense and «the birth of the modern world». The present proposal aims to collect articles that analyse the perception and response to changes in maritime transport at the harbour level, with respect to port cities considered both as individual cases and as groups of cities belonging to a regional geographic area or connected in a network, and finally as case studies in a comparative perspective.

Working Group on ‘Risk, Health, and State Socialism: Central and Eastern Europe, 1950s-1980s’
While much of this historiography has focused on liberal democracies, less attention has been given to how concepts of risk operated in state socialist contexts. Building on recent studies in the history of medicine and health, we invite scholars to join a working group examining risk, health, and medicine under state socialism in Central and Eastern Europe. To what extent did state socialist regimes recognize certain health and medical issues as ‘governable’ through risk? What kinds of practices and ideas emerged in response? And were there differences or similarities between state socialist and liberal democratic models of risk in healthcare and medicine? Our aim is to take an exploratory approach to discuss whether, and in what contexts, the concept of risk can be applied to state socialism, and to examine the risk-related practices, ideas, and technologies observed in healthcare and medicine in state socialism.

Sources, scope, and legitimacy of critical economic knowledge
The study of economic knowledge and its political influence has largely focused on central sites of power and on its academic production. This conference seeks to broaden that perspective by examining marginalized economic knowledge and the dynamics of its (de-)marginalization. It will specifically address the development of lay or relegated economic theories and practices, considering their logic of legitimation, the actors, spaces, and actions that generate them, and their relative autonomy. The conference will concentrate on the long twentieth century and welcomes proposals from all disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.

What counting means in an imperial and colonial situation
This conference intends to open in new ways the file of accounting and statistical approaches produced in imperial and colonial context (thematic maps, surveys, statistical series etc.) to extract all the information that they are likely to provide on societies and situations that they are supposed to illuminate. Taking into account the numerous historiographical findings, the critiques of the different numerical elements used, their racialist and normative aims, it is as much a question of being interested in the conditions of their production, whether they are visible (investigators) or invisible (interpreters , village elites), than to analyze the reactions to their production, their distribution or to specify the expectations of the sponsors and the uses to which they give rise. The conference intends to encourage the crossing of the scales mobilized by the different supports of these accounting elements, starting from individuals and up to the relations between administrations or colonial companies and the Metropolis.

Energy transitions and economic thinking in German-speaking territories, 1800-2000
ETRANHET explores how economic ideas on energy have developed in various market-economy contexts around the world, since the first waves of industrialization at the turn of the 19th century. It particularly addresses three key questions: (1) How did past economists (broadly defined) conceive the connection between energy, growth, and development? (2) How did they consider innovation and technological change in energy affairs? (3) How did economic discourse on energy influence policymaking, and vice versa? Areas covered by the project include Continental Europe, the British Isles, North and Latin America, South-East Asia, and some areas under colonial control. This workshop will be an opportunity to look more closely at German-speaking territories within Continental Europe.

Cinémas en contexte de guerre : histoire, création, réception
Cette journée d’études s’intéressera à une situation particulière, celle des guerres du XXe siècle, informant en profondeur les processus de création, de circulation et de réception d’œuvres cinématographiques qui leur sont contemporaines. Si la thématique n’est pas nouvelle, on se proposera de mettre la question contextuelle au cœur de l’étude, non seulement des objets filmiques, mais des relations à ces objets. Les communications aborderont ainsi les relations entre histoire et création, de la production (place et rôle des artistes et des groupes, travail opéré par et sur les représentations de la guerre, déplacements en tout genre) à la réception (usages des films, sens du loisir cinématographique en contexte). En lien avec le cinéma de fiction, une ouverture sur les reportages d’actualité en temps de guerre sera également proposée.

Ressources, valeurs et territorialités (France-Europe, XVIIe-XXIe siècle)
Les intervenants de ce colloque interrogeront la notion de souveraineté industrielle à différentes époques : Quelles ressources ont été mobilisées ? Quels secteurs sont protégés ? Quel bilan dresser des politiques menées sur la longue durée ? Quelles leçons ont été tirées des échecs et des réussites ? De nombreux secteurs d’activité et types de structure industrielle seront étudiés : proto-industrie, soierie, ressources végétales, minières et énergétiques (pétrole, nucléaire), armement, métallurgie, téléphonie, micro-électronique, automobile. Seront également abordés les sujets de la sauvegarde des savoir-faire, du développement de l’innovation, du financement et de la fiscalité des entreprises, de la formation des ingénieurs et du rôle des acteurs étatiques, des entreprises publiques et des institutions européennes. Les communications poseront enfin la question des échelles d’intervention : territoire, région, Nation, Europe, Atmosphère.
