Cycle de quatre conférences de la chaire Marcel Liebman
À l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de l’Institut — et en hommage à Marcel Liebman — nous ouvrons l’année 2026 avec une Chaire annuelle composée de quatre grandes conférences, portées par quatre intervenant·e·s, autour du thème : « Penser le monde à gauche face à la révolution conservatrice ». Ce cycle entend ouvrir à la réflexion et au débat « sur les pas de Marcel Liebman » et tend à prolonger son engagement intellectuel en fournissant des analyses historiques et critiques pour penser le monde d’aujourd’hui.

The Phanariots have long animated the historiography of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Southeast Europe. Contemporary political commentators, as well as historians seeking to construct national(ist) narratives, branded the Phanariots with critiques of corruption, foreign interests, and the legacies of the Ottoman past. Yet, scholars have conducted scant research on how and why “Phanariots” and “Phanariotism” came to signify corruption, bad governance, and a seemingly inescapable Ottoman past after 1821. This workshop tends to this gap in historiography.

The 16th Annual International Conference on Baltic and Nordic Studies seeks to explore the dynamic interplay between literature, heritage, and diplomacy in the Baltic and Nordic regions. Taking place at the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, this conference invites scholars, senior and junior researchers, doctoral students, and practitioners to delve into the profound connections between cultural expression, historical legacies, and diplomatic relations that have shaped the shared and distinct identities of these regions. We invite submissions addressing the intersection of Literature, Heritage, and Diplomacy in the Baltic and Nordic contexts. The conference will explore how these fields intersect and influence one another, shaping the cultural, political, and historical landscapes of the region.

En analysant, une décennie après la fin de la Guerre Froide, les changements survenus au cours du dernier quart du siècle passé sur le plan de l’expérience et des perceptions du temps. Le caractère multidimensionnel de la mémoire historique et ses rapports avec l’avenir dans le contexte des « transformations sans précédent » entraînées par le progrès technologique et par les défis climatiques représentent également des axes majeurs dans les recherches récentes en historiographie et en philosophie de l’histoire. À l’intersection de la mémoire historique avec celle politique, la nostalgie fonctionne comme « une épée à deux tranchants », en ce qu’elle semble être tant « un antidote émotionnel pour la politique », que « le meilleur instrument politique ». Les chercheurs de divers domaines sont encouragés à soumettre des propositions explorant plusieurs thèmes liés à la mémoire, à la nostalgie et à l’utopie en Europe post-Guerre Froide.

Violence and Conflict in Alexandre Kojève’s works

Alexandre Kojève is well known for having initiated a whole generation of intellectuals into a certain reading of Hegel. From the claim that the struggle for recognition must be necessarily a “bloody” one to the assessment that the replacement of those elites whose authority has expired may call for their annihilation, not to mention his equation of biological “death” with human freedom or his interpretation of revolutionary terror as a pedagogical tool to bring forth the perfect citizen of the post-historical age, Kojève´s corpus offers not few topics in which to ground such a reexamination. The special issue of Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) seeks cutting-age articles from contributors which openly explore the aforementioned topics as well as others along the same lines.

La guerre russo-ukrainienne. Représentations et répercussions en Afrique
Le 24 février 2022, la Fédération de Russie a déclenché un conflit armé contre l’Ukraine. Le 2 mars, le vote de la résolution de l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies (AGNU) condamnant cette guerre et demandant le retrait immédiat de l’armée russe du territoire ukrainien a donné les résultats suivants : sur les 193 États membres de l’Organisation des Nations unies (ONU), 141 ont approuvé cette résolution, 5 s’y sont opposés, 35 se sont abstenus et 12 n’ont pas pris part au vote. S’agissant particulièrement des 54 États africains, 29 ont voté pour, un seul s’y est opposé, 16 se sont abstenus et 8 autres n’ont pas participé au vote. Que révèle le vote des États africains à l’ONU en lien avec la guerre russo-ukrainienne ? Quelles sont les répercussions de ce conflit en Afrique ? Le présent appel à contributions vise, précisément, à répondre à ces deux interrogations.

However, the absence of a clear definition of the region continues to challenge researchers.

Les lieux institutionnels
Longtemps considérée comme périphérique, l’Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, – espace hétérogène possédant néanmoins certaines dynamiques propres bien identifiables – a progressivement retrouvé sa place dans une historiographie dynamique et renouvelée grâce aux apports de l’histoire transnationale, globale ou connectée. Le premier volet de ce futur rendez-vous pluriannuel intitulé « Les lieux du politique en Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, 1790-1990 » sera consacré aux lieux institutionnels.

Confronting the Crisis of Expertise: Historical Roots and Current Challenges
In the post-Covid-19 world, the problems already experienced by democracies with regards to social divisions and diminishing trust in public institutions are exacerbated by a growing epistemic crisis concerning the simultaneous need and contestation of expertise for public policy purposes. The existence of uncertain statistical data, the search for past models in dealing with hidden enemies, the public attempts to translate scientific knowledge and to make sense of decision-making processes, all point to a persistent need for advanced skills for working with governance data and discourses. Our course enhances participants’ skills in analyzing the incorporation of techno and scientific knowledge into public governance and discourses. The summer school seeks to provide the tools and categories to critically assess systemic responses in times of both contested expertise and scientificization of politics.

Death and Migration: Perspectives from the Post-Soviet Space
This dossier of Revue européenne des migrations internationales proposes to take up a research theme that has undergone a strong renewal of interest in recent years, that of death and migration. This dossier aims to shed light on an area which has been little studied from this angle (the post-Soviet space) and to develop an approach which focuses on the management of bodies 'dead in the distance' (deaths in migration, deaths due to migration). This dossier also focuses on the effects of a certain proximity to death on the practices of foresight and mutual aid (when they exist) in the migratory context, as well as their impacts on migration as a whole. Two thematic axes will guide the contributions: the first concerns the practical modalities of the management of dead bodies abroad; the second concerns mitigating and solidarity practices in relation to the proximity of death in migration.

Final Conference of the ValEUR research project
The conference addresses the role, effects and meanings of values at the crossroads of politics, culture, market and law. It documents the circulation and shaping of values between the different spheres of the European multi-level governance (local, national, supranational, transnational). It investigates the EU as a container of values politics as well as its interactions with external entities (Council of Europe, UN, rest of the world). A secondary purpose is to map the research using values as an exploratory framework of wider transformations of politics, policies and polities in Europe. Leaders of scientific projects having developed such agendas in recent years figure among the contributors.

Ce numéro se propose d’analyser les enjeux géoéconomiques, géopolitiques et géostratégiques autour desquels gravite l’actuelle offensive de la Russie en Afrique. Comment percevoir le retour de la Russie sur le continent depuis le début du XXIe siècle ? Dans la compétition déjà virulente entre les puissances occidentales elles-mêmes, entre celles-ci et la Chine pour le contrôle de l’Afrique centrale dont la cécité stratégique des dirigeants est caractéristique des pays, quel apport peut avoir l’entrée en scène de le Russie ? Quelles incidences l’entrée en scène de la Russie pourrait avoir dans la rude compétition de puissance dans une Afrique centrale au cœur de convoitises des grandes puissances, occidentales et émergentes ? Les approches historiques, juridiques, politiques, sécuritaires, diplomatiques, culturelles et stratégiques devront permettre de répondre à ces interrogations qui mettent en lumière la nouvelle politique africaine de la Russie.

Transnational dimensions of dealing with the past in ‘Third Wave’ democracies
Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the Former Soviet Union in Global Perspective
This conference aims to fill the gap by looking at how post-dictatorial justice and memory experiences in Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union after the “third wave of democratization” have reciprocally affected each other. It also seeks to unpack how memorialization practices in these regions were shaped by and influenced in turn criminalization discourses in other geographical contexts (Latin America, Asia, Africa). The conference focuses on transnational activism, transfers of knowledge, and expertise at bilateral, regional or international levels, the impact of legal and mnemonic narratives outside their countries of origin, and the role of international organizations and NGO's in dealing with mass violence. The conference aims thus to trace the mutlidirectional circulation of ideas, norms and models of reckoning with authoritarian regimes both within these regions, and between them and other areas of the world.

À partir d’études de cas précis, il s’agira dans le cadre de cette table ronde d’allier analyse historique à l’étude empirique du contemporain. Comment ces expériences, souvent étroitement liées à leurs contextes particuliers et à leurs cadres régionaux, peuvent-elles être observées aujourd’hui et servir de ressources pour l’étude plus générale de la question des migrations ?

In the heart of religion - theories, practices, methodologies and interdisciplinarity
Cette année, ce séminaire conçu comme un moment important à la sociabilité des doctorant·e·s du CéSor se composera d’une partie à orientation théorique et d’une autre axée sur la méthodologie. L’axe théorique se penchera principalement sur les questions d’identités dans toutes les orientations et recompositions. La multiplication et le renouvellement incessant des emplois de la notion d'identité n'étant plus à démontrer, le but de ces séances sera de réfléchir d’un point de vue interdisciplinaire aux divers expressions identitaires et aux orientations données aux recherches dans lesquelles entre une telle notion, en multipliant les terrains (terrains ethnographiques, archives ou corpus de sources), les périodes et les aires géographiques.

Après le centenaire de la révolution russe, 2018 est celui de la mort des empires continentaux, dont seul l'empire russe s'est reconstitué, avant de disparaître en 1991. Ces ateliers seront consacrés aux multiples reconfigurations qui ont accompagné son éclatement, recomposition, disparition. Dans une perspective comparative, seront examinées les relations de conflit et de dépendance, de désintégration et réintégration, de circulation volontaire ou forcée des populations, qui ont structuré cet espace.

Populism in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century
Since the 1990s, several political movements qualified as “populist” have emerged in Central and Eastern Europe, drawing the attention of political scientists. If we want to understand why these movements exercise such attraction and why they are so relentless in this space, it is necessary to cross the study of current politics with the analysis of long term developments. Indeed, since the 19th century, Central and Eastern Europe has known several movements and political parties that have called themselves or have been labelled as “populist”. In this sense, the long-term approach allows considering the similarities and the differences, according to different contexts and periods, and identifying the reasons and the mechanisms of action of these movements. At last, this historical approach helps to consider the specificity - if there is any specificity - of these movements in Central and Eastern Europe and to evaluate their impact on political cultures of the region.
