This event aims to assess the current state of research on the identification of individuals in prehistoric archaeology, exploring methods to identify individuals from archaeological remains, whether lithic materials or other types of artifacts. It will also discuss the advantages, limitations, and future potential of these approaches, while considering what insights they can provide about the social and economic organization of past societies.

Le connu, l’inconnu et l’imaginaire
Les sociétés humaines se sont toutes dotées de récits concernant leurs origines. Les objets matériels, par leur caractère visible et tangible, occupent une place particulièrement importante dans ces récits. Au XIXe siècle, le développement de l’archéologie scientifique dans les sociétés occidentales a profondément modifié notre rapport à ces objets du « passé » dont l’ancienneté s’était subitement révélée bien plus profonde. Dans ces récits des origines, ici ou ailleurs, l’imaginaire vient donc combler les vides, et cela plus encore là où les connaissances scientifiques dominent et invitent les sociétés à accepter l’inconfort du doute.

Past and future of archaeological collections
Field exploration, movements, preservation (19th-21st c.)
This symposium will concentrate on the creation, transmission and movements of prehistoric collections –including natural history specimens, human remains, and artefacts–, from the colonial era to the present day. Particular emphasis will be placed on collections from Southeast Asia, however, case studies drawn from other historical and geographical contexts will also be represented.

Bifurcations végétales d'après Graeber et Wengrow
En écho à l’exposition Bifurcations Végétales (Centre d’art contemporain La Traverse), cette journée d’études vise à faire dialoguer artistes et chercheur·euses sur l’influence du livre de David Graeber et David Wengrow, Au commencement était… (The Dawn of Everything). Contre les logiques extractivistes du capitalisme, l'essai invite à reconsidérer l’histoire humaine à travers des récits alternatifs, non linéaires, et de possibles bifurcations. Un dialogue franco-brésilien se nouera autour de cette lecture et des enjeux sociaux et écologiques actuels.

We’ll delve into everything from notorious forgeries and spectacular blunders to interpretive dead ends and moments of… let’s say, excessive enthusiasm in the field.The event offers a space for reflection, self-reflection, and a bit of humor—because, like any living science, archaeology sometimes takes a wrong turn. Yet, even when it goes astray, it always leads to something interesting.While the main theme centers on the field’s twists, turns, and detours, the program will also feature an open session for participants who wish to present their current research projects.

From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

Contrastes et mélanges en hommage à Georges Laplace se tiendront à Arudy (Pyrénées-atlantiques) du 19 au 21 septembre 2024. Les communications se déclineront en quatre dialectiques, constituant autant de thèmes reflétant les intérêts et l’itinéraire scientifique de l’archéologue Georges Laplace (1918-2004) : les tons et tonalités du chant, les lieux pyrénéens et montagnards, les savoirs scientifiques et dissidents et les transmissions techniques, anciennes ou actuelles.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Incarnation, matérialités, cosmogonies » pris dans une double approche ethnologique / anthropologique et archéologique, ce qui permet d’aborder les terrains et les concepts à partir des pierres naturelles ou travaillées par l’homme. Cela peut être entrepris dans le domaine de la culture matérielle, par exemple de la pierre taillée, gravée ou creusée, ou dans celui de la modélisation anthropique du paysage pour des raisons stratégiques, agricoles, symboliques ou esthétiques.

Ce séminaire collectif entend reconstruire la constellation de certaines problématiques et débats noués à des points de croisement ou de tension entre anthropologie et philosophie, en France et en Allemagne après 1945. Cette année nous nous intéressons aux manuscrits du premier Foucault autour de la question anthropologique et de la phénoménologie, à la théorie de la conscience et de l’inconscient chez Henri Ey, et aux sources paléoanthropologiques dans l’anthropologie phénoménologique de Blumenberg.
