Identity Negotiation and Ethnic Diversity in the Ancient World
The conference Between Eagles and Dragons: Identity Negotiation and Ethnic Diversity in the Ancient World explores the processes through which ethnic identities were constructed, contested, and transformed across multi-ethnic societies of ancient Eurasia. Bringing into dialogue regions from the Mediterranean to India and China, the event aims to investigate how institutions, cultural practices, languages, and historical narratives shaped categories of belonging and otherness. By adopting a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, the conference seeks to highlight the fluid, dynamic, and historically contingent nature of identity formation in the ancient world.

Entre l’« Orient » et l’« Occident » : représentations en miroir
Cette journée d’étude a pour objet de penser les imaginaires croisés de l’« Orient » et de l’« Occident » au sein des productions théâtrales et spectaculaires, opératiques et cinématographiques de diverses aires culturelles. Ces imaginaires se reflètent les uns dans les autres et se répondent, et ils contribuent à fabriquer des hiérarchies aux effets bien réels. Le champ d’étude sera restreint, d’un côté, aux espaces géographiques qui constituent l’ancienne « route de la soie » (en partant de l’Égypte et de la Turquie pour aller jusqu’à la Chine et au Japon, en passant par l’Iran et l’Inde); de l’autre, à une Europe aux contours en perpétuelle redéfinition. Les contributions se concentreront sur la période allant du XVIe au XXIe siècle.

L’objet du colloque concerne l’étude des moyens, méthodes et lieux de captivité des animaux aquatiques, et les interactions entre les espèces captives et les humains. Même s’il sera question bien évidemment de la gestion des viviers, le colloque n’a pas pour problématique principale l’alimentation humaine. Il s’agit ici d’envisager la captivité des animaux aquatiques de façon plus globale, en s’intéressant notamment à leurs conditions de vie.

At the same time, the term space was defined as more than just physical places, rather, social spaces and the production of such in the context of human interaction became the leading research focus. This conference seeks to develop the research on spatial perception in ancient societies by gathering scholars of any discipline in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Sciences to discuss spatial concepts from their own disciplinary perspective.

Bone objects during the Roman and Early Byzantine periods

Ancient bone objects have been found in relatively large quantities in the entire Mediterranean, from Spain to Syria and Egypt to France, where they were manufactured between the Neolithic and Medieval periods. The art of carving animal bones involves especially antler and horn. However, the spectrum of the worked bone objects recovered from Anatolia, rest of the eastern Mediterranean, Near East, the Black Sea area and Balkans is very varied, and reflects different characteristics of Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine daily life. In these areas they were also utilised as grave goods secondarily. They were exported or imported over the entire ancient Graeco-Roman and Early Byzantine worlds. In this conference papers dealing with ancient artefacts or objects manufactured by bone, antler, ivory, animal teeth, mother of pearl and cockleshell are included. Focus will be on bone objects between the first century B.C. and the sixth century A.D.

Shaping the Past. Rappresentazione, uso e manipolazione della memoria nel mondo antico
Seminario « Semi di Sapienza »
Ce séminaire affronte le thème - complexe et débattu - de la réception et de l'utilisation de la mémoire dans le monde gréco-romain et dans les sociétés du Proche et Moyen Orient antique et tardo-antique.
Le concept de "mémoire", déterminé en premier lieu dans les travaux de Maurice Halbwachs et, plus particulièrement en histoire ancienne, par Jan et Aleida Assman, est un instrument utile d'analyse. Le processus du souvenir, s'attachant habituellement à une dynamique neurologique strictement individuelle, peut être déterminé socialement. En effet, dans les communautés anciennes, la mémoire permet de s'identifier, de communiquer et de créer des normes. Par conséquent, la relation entre mémoire et passé est centrale pour définir les conditions des dynamiques identitaires des groupes sociaux. Ainsi, elle constitue un silon de recherche pertinent pour la recherche sur les communautés du monde ancien.

Lexique, morphologie et usages du « petit matériel » en forme de tablette
Ce workshop se donne quatre objectifs : recenser les différents types de tabellae, tesserae et sortes attestés dans le monde romain, en croisant la documentation matérielle et les références littéraires, épigraphiques ou juridiques relatives à ces objets ; établir une typologie générale du « petit matériel » en forme de tablette, afin de faciliter l’identification d’objets souvent mal classés dans les fonds des musées et les collections ; réfléchir aux traductions proposées pour rendre ces termes et aux équivalences linguistiques latin-grec, afin de les clarifier et de les homogénéiser ; poser les bases d’un travail collectif d’édition du « petit matériel » antique en forme de tablette.

From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Bringing together specialists of the Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Greek worlds, this international congress will discuss the appearance during the Iron Age I-II of new figures of power and of power management, opposing or presenting political alternatives to the ideologies and socio-economic functioning of the dominant power systems, thus leading, at times, to significant political changes. The debate may highlight the transformative capacity of ancient political systems, going beyond the usual opposition between the extreme conservatism recognized in Near Eastern despotisms, centralized but also often imperialist, and, on the other hand, the evolutionary tendency attributed to the political systems of the Greek world.
