The French Revolution and the Sacred
Global and Contemporary Perspectives (18th c. – present)
In the years leading up to the bicentenary commemorations of 1989, a new liberal interpretation of the French Revolution challenged a long-lived socialist one. In contrast to the Marxist view of a “bourgeois revolution” with popular support, the liberal historiography has recurrently emphasized the role of “revolutionary ideology” and the “collective mentality” which led to the episode of the “Terror”. We might take the end of Cold War binary frameworks as an opportunity to move beyond this long-lasting interpretive divide, and to reinvestigate how the Revolution transformed ideas of the sacred and has itself been sacralized.

The Lives and Afterlives of Cookie Mueller: Tales, Kinships, Persistence
Special issue of “ANGLES – new perspectives on the anglophone world” (april 2027)
Cookie Mueller (1949-1989) is probably best known for her small parts in Waters’ early movies (Multiple Maniacs, 1970; Pink Flamingos, 1972; Female Trouble, 1974; Desperate Living, 1977) and for befriending many artists, including Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. She was, however, also a gifted writer, who wrote health columns for the East Village Eye, a memoir, a theater play, as well as a series of nonsensical portraits/short stories entitled How to Get Rid of Pimples (1984). Cookie Mueller was one of the many victims of the AIDS epidemic. We invite contributors to explore Cookie Mueller’s writing ; the networks, artistic and emotional, in which she was embedded ; the experiences of loss and mourning in the context of the AIDS crisis.

Generations and Generational Time in the United States During the Long Nineteenth Century
This conference will take place at Lille University, June 12-13, 2025, and will explore generations, generational thinking, and generational time in the United States during the long nineteenth century. In the wake of the Revolution the very idea of generations meant freedom from the parent country, and the possibility of taking turns to shape the nation. But generationality also implies a linear experience of time and logics of transmission which are not available to many oppressed groups, in the context of slavery in particular. Our goal is to provide an opportunity to investigate modes of relationality, kinship, or fellow-feeling throughout the nineteenth century while questioning and complicating the "generational model." We welcome contributions on the literature, the culture and the history of the United States in the long nineteenth century.

« Au creux du souvenir… trois petites notes de musique »
A Tribute to Georges Delerue (1925-1992)
2025 will mark the 100th anniversary of Georges Delerue’s birth. Hosted by the University of Evry, this international conference pays tribute to one of the most prolific composers of French cinema, who won three César awards for his scores to Préparez vos mouchoirs (Bertrand Blier, 1978), L’Amour en fuite (François Truffaut, 1979) and Le Dernier Métro (Truffaut, 1980). Despite the existence of a few biographies, the musician is still little represented in academic literature. The conference aims to reflect on existing research on the composer and to lay new foundations for the study of his work.

Les Cahiers de l’abbaye de Créteil lance un appel à contributions pour son prochain numéro thématique (Volume 43), à paraître en janvier 2025. Consacré à l’étude réactualisée de l’œuvre de Georges Duhamel intitulée Scènes de la vie future (1930), il doit permettre d'interroger la modernité d'un récit en étroite interdépendance avec son siècle, ainsi que son aptitude à éclairer notre présent. L’opposition séculaire entre l’Homme et la Machine fait-elle toujours sens aujourd’hui ? Les vues duhaméliennes sur l’« automate » font-elles écho à notre rapport actuel aux robots dont le mimétisme humain est de plus en plus saisissant ? Quelles sont les circulations éthiques, philosophiques et culturelles qui irriguent la pérennité et la modernité de Scènes de la vie future? Quels sont au contraire ses éléments fanés, en raison de leur anachronisme ? Une réception renouvelée et actuelle de cette œuvre serait-elle féconde et possible ?

De l’archivistique au XXe siècle
Hommage à Yves Pérotin (1922-1981)
À l’occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, les archives de Paris et l’école des chartes ont souhaité rendre hommage à Yves Pérotin, figure majeure et internationale de l’archivistique du XXe siècle dans le cadre d’une journée d’étude. Homme de concepts, il a fourni à la théorie des trois âges des archives un apport décisif. Archiviste de terrain, il a exercé dans des environnements variés, des archives du Var à celles de la Seine, en passant par la Réunion, la Société des nations et l’OMS. De la théorie à la pratique, son influence sur la pensée archivistique a été et reste déterminante aujourd’hui.

Time at the Turn of the Twentieth Century in American-British Philosophy
Around the turn of the twentieth century, time became a major focus of American-British philosophy. Against a broadly Kantian-Hegelian backdrop, philosophers began developing new questions and theories about time. Shadworth Hodgson argued humans perceive a ‘specious present’, a short duration rather than an infinitesimally small one; this view was further developed by Mary Calkins and William James. J. M. E. McTaggart advanced a new argument for the unreality of time. A. N. Whitehead made time the foundation of his process philosophy. This event brings together philosophers from Europe and North America exploring this period that was to become defining for the contours of twentieth-century English-speaking philosophy of time. The event will deliberately be scheduled to be compatible with European and North American time zones.

Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

Musical notation and corporality
Towards a construction of the notion of "body" in musical notation of the second half of the 20th century
La seconde moitié du XXe siècle a vu se multiplier les remises en question des conventions dans le domaine de la notation musicale, conventions stabilisées au XIXe siècle. Après 1950, s’affirment de nouveaux rapports partition-interprétation qui sont l’enjeu de revendications émancipatrices vis-à-vis de l’écrit. Ces renouvellements suggèrent une importance nouvelle du « corps », celui du compositeur comme de l'interprète. Le « corps » est la notion que nous proposons de construire en regard des nouvelles expériences de notations, notamment dans les partitions de compositeurs américains des années 1970-1990 (John Cage, Earle Brown, Julius Eastman). Il s'agit également d'inscrire la corporalité dans l'histoire longue de la notation musicale, remontant à l'époque médiévale, et de définir les éventuels apports originaux de al fin du XXe siècle sur cette problématique du « corps ».

“Literary Offenses” and Other Contentious Matter
This one-day conference will address the subject of controversial or polemical texts such as reviews, essays, letters, prefaces and/or postfaces published between 1800 and 1900 in Britain and the United States. It seeks to open fresh approaches to controversies or polemics by focusing on literature and the literary aspects of these questions. Indeed, if controversy can be defined as a debate between two or more parties with different viewpoints before an audience, studies have mainly come from the fields of social sciences and science studies, with some interest in rhetoric and/or argumentation. However, literary controversies are as important as scientific ones for the constitution of the public, democratic debate as it was shaped in Britain and in the U.S. in the nineteenth century. Controversies and polemics contributed to legitimizing some literary genres; they gave publicity to new or avant-garde authors; they redefined the content and contours of the public debate.

Struggle and the journal - collective writings and alternative discourses
Écritures collectives et discours alternatifs
Cette journée d’étude veut interroger ce lieu, aussi bien physique qu’intellectuel, qu’est la revue et la manière dont s’y nouent des discours alternatifs, dont s’y élaborent des écritures qui tentent de résister à l’usure du discours politique comme parfois à l’isolement de l’entreprise littéraire. Ces lieux sont, en un sens, nécessairement minoritaires et précaires, dans un entre-deux fragile, ni totalement dans le cycle médiatique, ni hors du débat public. A travers l’analyse d’exemples français et étrangers, issus de diverses périodes (de « l’âge d’or » du tournant du XXe siècle à l’époque contemporaine), nous voudrions explorer ce que les revues apportent, en termes de style et de positionnement, les deux allant bien souvent de pair.

A transatlantic dialogue
On the occasion of the launch of Picturing, the first volume of the Terra Foundation Essays, a new publication series exploring themes of critical importance to the history of arts and visual culture of the United States, the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte, Paris, and the Terra Foundation for American Art are jointly organizing a conference to further the transatlantic dialogue about what pictures are and what they do. This conference invites speakers to reflect on the differences and convergences between the intellectual traditions of visual studies and Bildwissenschaft. Are there ways to think about pictures anew by bringing these models more closely together? Does the move away from visuality towards the material offer possibilities for overcoming early differences between these two approaches?

Alors que l’intensification du travail marque tous les modes de production – artisanat, industrie rurale, manufactures – de nombreux acteurs des techniques (artisans, ingénieurs, savants, caméralistes, etc.) proposent une théorisation de l’action productive, formulant de façon plus ou moins aboutie leur compréhension du travail en termes opératoires et plaçant de grands espoirs dans une science humaine capable d’améliorer l’activité.

Discrepancies: the life and work of José Rodrigues Miguéis
Lorsqu’il quitte le Portugal pour les États-Unis en 1935, José Rodrigues Miguéis (1901-1980) est un écrivain prometteur et un journaliste et militant politique reconnu, ancien membre du groupe Seara Nova, maintenant proche des communistes. À New-York, il poursuit ses activités militantes durant une dizaine d’années puis, après une grave maladie et une tentative infructueuse de retour définitif au Portugal, il finit par se consacrer pleinement à l’écriture. La majeure partie de son œuvre ne sera publiée en volume qu’à partir de 1958, à près de soixante ans, si bien que l’écrivain exilé se retrouve en décalage avec le Portugal (ses lecteurs, la société et la dictature en vigueur), mais aussi avec la vision du monde ayant présidé à l’écriture d’une grande partie de ses écrits inédits. C’est dans le cadre de ce parcours biobibliographique particulier que les communicants s’intéresseront à l’œuvre fictionnelle et non fictionnelle migueisienne. Alors que son œuvre est de plus en plus étudiée au Portugal, aux USA et au Brésil, ce premier colloque consacré à José Rodrigues Miguéis en France sera l’occasion de mieux faire connaître cette grande figure méconnue de l’histoire culturelle portugaise du XXe siècle.

The inaugural international conference of the French Society of Modernist Studies
The aim of this two-day conference is to foster discussion on communities in the modernist period. As discursive constructs and historical practices, communities constitute a privileged phenomenon from which to understand the political and ethical regime of modernist texts, as well as the actual forms of collective experience in which writers and readers were involved. More than a decade after Jessica Berman’s landmark work on "the politics of community" in modernist fiction, we seek to explore the various ways in which communities were configured across genres and artistic media, but also to acknowledge the grounds of their historical and cultural specificity. We hope that this will lead us to distinguish various versions of the communal, from the ideal to the empirical, from the utopian to the everyday, from consensus to dissensus.

Transatlantic Cage. John Cage Centennial in Paris
2012 marquera le centième anniversaire de la naissance de John Cage, né le 5 septembre 1912. Ce projet vise à célébrer l’anniversaire des cent ans d’une figure centrale de l’art contemporain dont la philosophie et l’art a eu une importance prépondérante, quoiqu’encore peu connue, sur la scène française. L’occasion de son centième anniversaire est le moment idéal pour revenir sur la portée de son influence en France. Si le nom de Cage est un nom assez familier en tant que compositeur, son influence en France sur la musique, mais également sur l’histoire de l’art en général, est moins connue. C’est pourquoi l’impact qu’il a eu sur l’ensemble de la scène artistique, bien au-delà de la musique, mérite d’être présenté. Cet événement vise à donner au public la mesure de l’influence de Cage, en interrogeant la place qu’il occupe dans le paysage culturel français à travers un colloque international et des concerts qui réuniront des chercheurs et des artistes français et américains. -

Franz Boas, the work of the gaze
Colloque organisé par Michel Espagne et Isabelle Kalinowski (CNRS, Equipe « Transferts culturels », École normale supérieure, Paris). En collaboration avec le département de la recherche et de l’enseignement du musée du quai Branly. Le colloque « Franz Boas, le travail du regard » aura pour but d’interroger les images, au sens le plus large, que Boas a construit des Indiens d’Amérique du Nord : images constituées à partir d’une pratique du terrain et d’une intimité avec des indigènes, comme son informateur et ami George Hunt ; photographies, dessins, représentations géographiques ; images du mythe et de la mémoire, consignées dans des recueils de légendes et des installations muséographiques ; enfin, images rituelles de l’art, masques, totems et autres objets qu’il contribua à faire découvrir, aux États-Unis et dans des collections privées et publiques européennes.
