Since its first broadcast on September 8, 1966, Star Trek has established itself as a prolific, transmedia, and intergenerational fictional universe that can be divided into three major eras. It is therefore not surprising that, since the 1990s, Star Trek has become a favored subject of study in Anglo-Saxon cultural studies, popular media studies, and science fiction studies, but such studies remain very rare in the French-speaking world. Most of the work focuses on its ideological, political, and social dimensions.

Polémiques et controverses médiatiques, tensions politiques et débat public
Ce séminaire 2024-2025 du GREPs (Groupe de recherche sur les écrans et leurs publics) appréhende les dynamiques de confrontation qui traversent les mondes du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel. Replacés dans leur contexte, ils permettent de mettre au jour les reconfigurations permanentes des rapports de force au sein de multiples espaces sociaux, mais aussi l’intensité des mécanismes de concentration de l’attention et de dissémination de certaines prises de position (Quemener 2018), « où s’expriment de manière parfois virulente et spectaculaire les antagonismes qui travaillent le collectif » (Devars et Taieb 2023). À ce titre, les polémiques et controverses ne sauraient laisser indifférents et constituent de précieux terrains d’investigation pour de nombreuses disciplines.

This conference aims to study the representations of the city of Detroit in order to examine their ideological, political, and ethical subtexts from a diachronic and multidisciplinary perspective. Presentations may focus on works of fiction or non-fiction (books, films, series, videogames, documentaries, photographs, etc.) as well as on other types of representations, such as news reports or political speeches.

Communication, Information, Politics and Culture in the U.S.
Médiamerica is a seminar on American news media organized by researchers working in France. Its aim is to cultivate research on the links between communication, politics, culture, and the processes by which information is produced, circulated, and given form, focusing on the North American context. Médiamerica brings together researchers with varied backgrounds to explore these issues from both historical and contemporary perspectives. The seminar offers a space for scholarly reflection and debate, to consider emergent phenomena in news and communication, as well as the ways in which the academic community on both sides of the Atlantic conceptualize such phenomena. This initiative seeks to build bridges between anglophone studies and communication studies, encouraging dialogue between different methodological approaches and benefiting from an intercultural perspective.

Ce colloque a pour but d’étudier le rôle des revues dans l’évolution des canons littéraires et artistiques au XIXe et au XXe siècle dans les domaines francophones, anglophones et germanophones. Si les forces de réaction « trouvent des organes puissants auprès de véritables gendarmes médiatiques » (Diaz, 2014) comme les revues dominantes et institutionnelles, les forces d’évolution voire de révolution usent elles aussi de l’arme médiatique qu’est la revue. Nous aimerions proposer des journées de réflexion sur les échanges culturels au sein des revues, dans une perspective transnationale, translittéraire et pluriséculaire.

A Tribute to Georges Delerue (1925-1992)
2025 will mark the 100th anniversary of Georges Delerue’s birth. Hosted by the University of Evry, this international conference pays tribute to one of the most prolific composers of French cinema, who won three César awards for his scores to Préparez vos mouchoirs (Bertrand Blier, 1978), L’Amour en fuite (François Truffaut, 1979) and Le Dernier Métro (Truffaut, 1980). Despite the existence of a few biographies, the musician is still little represented in academic literature. The conference aims to reflect on existing research on the composer and to lay new foundations for the study of his work.

Polarisation of British and American societies
Causes, consequences, perspectives
The growing polarisation within American and British societies raises profound questions about the mechanisms by which public opinion is influenced and the political and social transformations that ensue. This polarisation expresses itself at several levels, notably between different age groups, between levels of education, and between urban and rural areas. We assume here that the apparent polarisation of US and UK societies has increased in recent years, not least due to the rise to power and tenure of Donald J. Trump in the US and the vote in favour of Brexit in the UK. The aim will be to understand how these two events have acted as catalysts reinforcing divisions already present and creating new forms of divisions.

Following the conferences devoted to US network series produced from the 1950s to the 1970s (Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier, May 2018), during the 1980s (UPVM, February 2019) or the 1990s (UPVM, February 2020), this conference will focus on network series of the following decade: 2000-2010. Our aim is to give center stage to series that have often been either neglected or analyzed through restricted methodological approaches, and to contribute to re-historicizing the study of television series by refusing to focus solely on the hyper-contemporary series currently being aired.

L’engouement pour les séries en France et dans le monde ne cesse de progresser. À l’écran, ce goût pour la sérialité a plus d’un siècle. Des Mystères de New York (Louis Gasnier et George B. Seitz, 1914) ou Judex (Louis Feuillade, 1917), à Lupin (George Kay et François Uzan, 2021) ou Stranger Things (Matt et Ross Duffer, 2023), les formes d’écritures, les modes de production et les habitudes de consommation de ces produits culturels ont changé tout en conservant certaines particularités propres au phénomène de la sérialité. Ce colloque international a pour objectif, dans une perspective culturaliste, d’appréhender les films à épisodes dans leur globalité, de leur production à leur réception en passant par leur circulation et par leur écriture. Il s’agira également de mieux comprendre la fascination des publics pour cette forme narrative, révélatrice de nouvelles pratiques culturelles à l’image de la société de consommation émergente.

Le cinquante-quatrième congrès de l’Association française d’études américaines portera sur le thème des « Voix, sons, bruits, silences ». Physiques ou métaphoriques, les bruits, les sons, les voix et les silences se glissent au creux de nos oreilles ou résonnent dans l’espace public ; ils se déploient au cinéma et dans les séries, dans les arts, la littérature et la musique, dans les espaces urbains et ruraux, dans les mouvements sociaux, les communautés religieuses, les institutions politiques et les médias. Ils traversent le temps et constituent des archives. Les voix sont narratives, politiques, chantées, transcrites, déformées, amplifiées, imitées, reprises, plurielles et singulières. De quelles voix nous faisons-nous l’écho ? Quand la·le chercheur·se doit-iel de parler ou se taire ?

Stratégies de légitimation et postures d’autorité », cet atelier interroge la façon dont les récits autobiographiques, qu’il s’agisse d’ouvrages publiés sous la forme d’autobiographies à proprement parler, de mémoires, de témoignages, de journaux, ou de textes mis en ligne, permettent à leur auteur·rice d’asseoir ou de consolider une légitimité, voire de rétablir une autorité mise à mal, que cela soit dans l’espace des mouvements sociaux ou dans la sphère politique institutionnalisée, aux États-Unis.

Picturing Prehistory in American Art and Visual Culture
Atlantis, pre-Columbian “Mound Builders,” cave men locked in combat with T. Rex — visions of ancient, ruined, or “lost” worlds on a spectrum between fact and fantasy have long fascinated American artists and producers of visual culture. How have U.S. artists and image makers depicted prehistory, and to what ends? How have visualizations of prehistory from the eighteenth century to 1980 contributed to new conceptualizations of culture, time, and space? For this two-day conference, we invite papers examining images of prehistory, in different media and in both artistic and nonartistic contexts.

"Transatlantica" special issue
This Transatlantica issue sets out to examine how, in the process of creating new audiences for its products, child-centric media crafted a homogenizing vision of childhood especially compatible with media consumption. As a result, in the course of the late XIXth and XXth centuries, media has made itself the vehicle of adult norms and expectations about children’s tastes, behaviors and development – be it to pander to existing tastes and behaviors or shape them to ideal standards, some civic-minded (with emphasis on social adjustment, character building, or good citizenship), some commercial, and others both at once.

L’objet de cette journée d’études est d’interroger les possibilités ouvertes par la sociologie culturelle - notamment les concepts d'omnivorisme, d'éclectisme, de dissonance - aux autres disciplines, notamment celles (civilisation, littérature, histoire) traditionnellement attachées à des aires culturelles (anglophone notamment) et plus ouvertes au syncrétisme théorique que la sociologie. La problématique du mélange des genres constitue-elle une approche permettant d’appréhender la culture dans son ensemble ? C’est ce que nous nous proposons de déplier pendant cette journée d’études, en s’attachant à la fois au point de vue des consommateurs, des créateurs et des créations culturelles.

The US network The CW celebrates its ten-year anniversary this year. As the product of a merger between previous networks The WB and UPN, the small network has distinguished itself over its ten-year tenure with policies that are unique in the American television landscape. The diversity and originality of its programming have attracted an audience that is perhaps smaller than those garnered by the larger networks, but which has proven itself fiercely loyal to the channel. This day-long seminar therefore seeks to examine The CW’s fictions, but also, from a more global perspective, the channel itself. A case study of The CW will allow us to analyze these little-studied series but also to blend approaches to better understand this type of fiction.
