Malgré les affirmations de simplicité des fondateurs de l’ordre des chartreux, images et œuvres d’art sont très largement présentes dans les monastères cartusiens, en particulier à la fin du Moyen Âge et durant la première modernité. Dans le cadre de cette conférence, nous souhaitons explorer plus avant de nouvelles pistes de recherche et ouvrir de nouvelles voies afin de mieux cerner le rôle des œuvres d’art et des images dans les chartreuses européennes.

List, compile, assemble: small forms and the power of collecting
Workshop of the research training group “The literary and epistemic history of small forms”
Unraveling the various asymmetries inherent in collecting requires shifting our focus from collections themselves to how collections come into being. This entails viewing collections as both purposeful and contingent results of scientific or cultural practice. Drawing on the history of collecting and the history of paperwork, this interdisciplinary workshop aims to enhance our understanding of the collecting processes involving written testimonies, inscriptions, and texts. With a focus on contexts such as artistic-literary primitivism or colonial encounters, the workshop proposes a comparative examination of the asymmetries associated with collecting via three main axes: actor-networks involved in the production of collections, the role of collecting in the management of life, and how collections emerge from asymmetrical media practices.

L’apport des arts plastiques aux sciences secrètes
Pour son cinquième numéro (prévu fin 2024), Arcana naturae cherchera à rendre compte de l’imbrication de l’art, de la science et de la magie, à travers l’histoire des sciences secrètes. On s’intéressera donc en particulier aux productions artistiques plastiques (au sens large, gravures, peintures, sculptures, cartes, etc.) qui témoignent de la relation entre ces trois pôles conceptuels. Les œuvres et les images ont toujours jouée – en parallèle des textes – un rôle déterminant au sein des sciences secrètes. Ce numéro d’Arcana naturae s’efforcera donc d’explorer la question des œuvres plastiques comme média singulier et autonome de la transmission et de la création des savoirs secrets. Dans quelle mesure les œuvres plastiques jouent-elles un rôle actif dans le processus de transmission et de diffusion des connaissances magico-scientifiques ?

Interdisciplinary approaches to imagery and imagination
What shall we call an “image”? Is it that from which knowledge proceeds or that which anticipates knowledge? Is image something only able to be recognised as object of thinking or it shows per se, in its polysemy and equivocal constitution, a deep, still unexplored generative form of thinking? From the point of view of the understanding of the digital age, where we entered in, to a strong consideration of the new frontiers of science, knowledge, and philosophy and from here up to societal and cultural dimensions, the thinking of the image still remain an enigma.The aim of the international conference is, perhaps for the first time, to study and to explore in a genuine interdisciplinary approach the multiversal horizon of human imagery and, in particular its constructive, generative capacity of building a world-meaning.

Le terrain en arts vivants. Récits, méthodes, pratiques
Ces dernières années, de nombreux travaux de recherche s’adossent à un travail de « terrain » à la croisée des arts du spectacle et des sciences humaines et sociales. Le colloque interrogera la place du·de la chercheur·e, ses postures et son engagement sur le terrain. L’observation participante, la participation observante, l’objectivation de la participation, l’engagement et les modalités de restitution constitueront le cœur de la réflexion méthodologique. Seront ainsi étudiés les rituels et les pratiques festives, les pratiques spectaculaires, notamment la danse, le cirque et la musique, ainsi que la question des terrains sous tension dans plusieurs aires culturelles (asiatiques, américaines, africaines et européennes).

Picturing Prehistory in American Art and Visual Culture
Atlantis, pre-Columbian “Mound Builders,” cave men locked in combat with T. Rex — visions of ancient, ruined, or “lost” worlds on a spectrum between fact and fantasy have long fascinated American artists and producers of visual culture. How have U.S. artists and image makers depicted prehistory, and to what ends? How have visualizations of prehistory from the eighteenth century to 1980 contributed to new conceptualizations of culture, time, and space? For this two-day conference, we invite papers examining images of prehistory, in different media and in both artistic and nonartistic contexts.

Vision and speculation in the art of Pieter Bruegel
Ce colloque propose d’envisager la représentation de la nature et des activités humaines chez Bruegel dans le contexte de cette pensée spéculative. À la fois miroir du monde et miroir tendu au spectateur, les images spéculatives de Bruegel sont conçues comme des exercices de discernement. Il s’agira dès lors d’interroger deux des caractéristiques fondamentales des oeuvres de Bruegel.

Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages
Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

In the last decades, the body’s role and its agency have gained new centrality in the analysis of the religious experience. Through its connection with materiality, the religious expression surpasses the spiritual to be understood as a chain of relationships and encounters between bodies, objects and sensory stimuli. Accordingly, under the premise of “routes, transfers and intermediality”, this event seeks innovative readings on subjects that discuss, question and rethink dynamics of circulation, transmission and alterity, through an exchange of ideas and objects of study, which crosses borders and disciplines.

Objets de dévotion en représentation dans l’Europe moderne (XVIe-XVIIIe siècle)
L’histoire de l’art a, depuis longtemps, intégré l’importance du spectateur et du contexte à la fois perceptif, cognitif et pragmatique qui, dans un temps et un espace déterminés, organise son rapport spécifique à une œuvre. Certains éléments restent cependant sous-évalués sinon ignorés : ce sont les objets, « appareils » et autres « prothèses » perceptives qui, dans bien des cas, contribuent de façon décisive à l’appropriation et à l’usage effectif des représentations. Notre rencontre se propose d’étudier, à travers une série d’études de cas exemplaires, certains de ces objets et plusieurs de ces pratiques qui concernent non seulement les catholiques mais également – non sans restrictions, réserves, transformations, déplacements, altérations, désacralisations et évolutions dans le temps –, les communautés réformées.

V International Conference on Mythcriticism
The V International Conference on Mythcriticism “Myth and Audiovisual Creation” will analyze the impact of myth in audiovisual creation from 1900 to the present day. The Conference will be organized in four universities during two weeks.The Conference will be divided into 4 venues according to different themes: "Germanic Myths" in the University of Alcalá, "Classical Myths" in the University Autónoma, "Biblical Myths" in the University Francisco de Vitoria and "Modern Myths" in the University Complutense. Researchers can send to one of their 4 venues their abstracts. They will have to analyze the relevance of film, TV series and video games in the creation and modification of old, medieval and modern myths to our contemporary world.

Litany in the Arts and Culture
The litany derives from ancient religious rites. Throughout the ages, however, it spread across many countries and became much more than a mere form of prayer. As has been demonstrated by our recent studies on the litanic forms in European poetry it is possible to reconstruct a cultural and literary map of European regions that traces the level of their participation in and contribution to the litanic tradition. The litanic verse is marked by religious semantics, but it also bears the mark of inter-European divisions, such as those experienced between and within various denominations, countries and nations, as well as the original folk cultures. Therefore, the litany may be of interest to scholars specializing in areas such the emergence of national identities and religious minorities, the crossover between art and religion as well as between music and poetry, the history of liturgy and spiritual life, the cultural exchanges between various nations.
