Shaping the Past. Rappresentazione, uso e manipolazione della memoria nel mondo antico
Seminario « Semi di Sapienza »
Ce séminaire affronte le thème - complexe et débattu - de la réception et de l'utilisation de la mémoire dans le monde gréco-romain et dans les sociétés du Proche et Moyen Orient antique et tardo-antique.
Le concept de "mémoire", déterminé en premier lieu dans les travaux de Maurice Halbwachs et, plus particulièrement en histoire ancienne, par Jan et Aleida Assman, est un instrument utile d'analyse. Le processus du souvenir, s'attachant habituellement à une dynamique neurologique strictement individuelle, peut être déterminé socialement. En effet, dans les communautés anciennes, la mémoire permet de s'identifier, de communiquer et de créer des normes. Par conséquent, la relation entre mémoire et passé est centrale pour définir les conditions des dynamiques identitaires des groupes sociaux. Ainsi, elle constitue un silon de recherche pertinent pour la recherche sur les communautés du monde ancien.

Le laboratoire SAMA (Sciences de l’Antiquité et du Moyen Âge) de l’université de Lorraine organise une deuxième journée d’étude consacrée cette année aux jeunes filles puissantes de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge. Cette rencontre sera l’occasion de questionner leur statut, leur vulnérabilité et leur capacité d’agir en vertu même de leur état d’individu en transition.

La promesse d’une terre nouvelle et d’un corps nouveau est au cœur de l’espérance juive et chrétienne. Les chercheurs de La Bible & ses lectures (Antiquité classique et tardive) se proposent d’examiner comment les textes sources (les textes bibliques, les sources juives et chrétiennes antiques) rendent compte de cette promesse divine, et par suite, de cette espérance. Il s’agira en particulier de mettre en lumière comment les deux pôles de la promesse, « terre nouvelle » et « corps nouveau », sont définis et articulés.

Judas the Galilean: the Man and his Significance
In 6 CE, while Quirinius was taking the census of Judea, the first Jewish opposition aroused against Roman presence in the region, led by a man known as Judas the Galilean (or the Gaulanite). According to Josephus, all subsequent troubles were the fact of this man. But who was Judas? Was he so important in the history? Was he even challenging Roman authorities? As usual in similar cases, the scholarly debates are endless about the man and his significance. This conference aims to survey all of the many faces of Judas in recent historiography and to discuss each evidence in order to estimate the true place of Judas in history.

From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East
In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

History, Philology and Archaeology of Zoroastrianism
The purpose of this workshop will be to provide a multidisciplinary approach by combining historical studies, archaeology and philology, in order to contribute to the study of the ancient zoroastrian religion, ideally outside of modern Iran and India. Nevertheless, this purpose cannot be achieved without taking into consideration and a side-by-side comparison of the data from the long-standing tradition of the mentioned disciplines, collected from Iran, India and other related regions.

Floods and Other Destructions. Stories about the End in the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean
Le colloque porte sur la pratique de mise en récit des moments de crise, de destruction et de désagrégation sociale au sein de différentes civilisations du pourtour de la Méditerranée orientale ancienne (IIe-Ier millénaire av. J.-C.). À travers l’analyse des convergences et des divergences entre les modèles narratifs concernés – issus de la Grèce ancienne et de la Mésopotamie, du Levant et de l’ancien Israël – on examinera les éléments linguistiques et les conceptions mobilisés afin de décrire ce qui détruit – mais aussi, en contre-jour, ce qui fonde – l’identité d’une société et de ses institutions, ainsi que sa manière de se mettre en relation avec le divin et la sphère religieuse. La perspective transversale et interdisciplinaire du colloque permettra également de discuter la possibilité d’inscrire les récits et discours analysés dans un horizon culturel partagé, où chaque civilisation vient inscrire ses spécificités.

The ERC MAP proposes, in collaboration with the French School at Athens, a thematic Spring School on the approach of the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean (names, representations, cult spaces, practices and actors), through the notion of "network". The latter will be considered both as a conceptual resource of heuristic and hermeneutic scope and as an analytical tool associated with specific methods, software and visualisations.

Pour explorer l’idée selon laquelle nommer c’est convoquer des bribes de « théologie » s’enracinant dans des traditions et des innovations propres à chaque environnement, la Syrie fournit un terrain d’une richesse exceptionnelle. Dans le cadre du projet MAP (ERC Advanced Grant 741182 « Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency »), on se propose de scruter les appellations partagées ou spécifiques, répandues ou singulières, des innombrables divinités attestées avec leurs attributs onomastiques et iconographiques dans les sanctuaires syriens : Nabu, Nergal, Shamash, Zeus, Athéna, Némésis, ou encore les moins connus Durahlun, Azzanathkona, ou Shalman.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Guest researchers ERC "Mapping Ancient Polytheisms"
The ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

De prime abord, l’idée de rétribution semble bien inscrite dans les textes bibliques et les littératures du Proche-Orient ancien. Elle est pourtant tellement familière dans le monde occidental et la culture judéo-chrétienne, qu’il n’est pas exclu qu’elle puisse être utilisée indûment pour caractériser le contenu de textes ou qualifier leur théologie. Si l’étymologie du terme re-tribuere signifie littéralement « payer / donner en retour », et si la rétribution est alors ce qui est reçu en retour (récompense ou sanction) pour un acte déterminé, quelle définition plus précise en donner pour sonder les textes de la Bible et les corpus de l’Orient ancien ? Quels champs lexicaux serviraient, dans ces derniers, à lui donner consistance ? Sur quels critères estimer qu’on peut lire un texte à travers le prisme de cette idée ?

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

Dans nos sociétés modernes occidentales, les savoirs intellectuels sont majoritairement produits et diffusés dans des lieux de savoirs laïques (universités et laboratoires de recherche, écoles publiques, bibliothèques municipales, musées…). Pourtant, dans de nombreuses cultures, anciennes comme contemporaines, les lieux de culte constituent des lieux de savoir privilégiés, que ce soit parce qu’ils sont fréquentés par des individus lettrés ou parce qu’ils constituent eux-mêmes des centres de diffusion voire de production des savoirs. L’ambition de cette journée sera donc de s’interroger sur les rapports particuliers entre lieux de culte et lieux de savoir dans différentes civilisations, à travers une approche comparatiste.
