Post-doctoral prize: research into the arts and cultures of the Mediterranean world
Marc de Montalembert Foundation / École du Louvre
The Marc de Montalembert Foundation and the École du Louvre have formed a partnership to sponsor the Marc de Montalembert Prize, worth 9,000 euros. The prize will be awarded to support a research project whose anticipated results will constitute an original contribution to the knowledge of the arts of the Mediterranean world from Antiquity to our day. The Foundation will also offer the prize holder the possibility of a residency at its headquarters in Rhodes, Greece.

Tax resistance in the Roman world
L’impôt est aussi vieux que les sociétés et la résistance à l’impôt, aussi vieux que lui. Dans un empire comme celui de Rome, des centaines de peuples contribuent au financement de l’Etat ; des centaines de peuples riches de leur propre histoire, de leur propre culture, de leur propre manière de se représenter la fiscalité. Dans ce colloque, des spécialistes venus du monde entier examineront les causes, les temporalités, les modalités et les conséquences des diverses formes de refus de l’impôt romain, qu’il provienne des citoyens ou des provinciaux, dans un contexte économique, social, culturel, politique ou religieux. Les présentations permettront de questionner les rapports de consentement et de contrainte entre le pouvoir central et les divers sujets de Rome et de comprendre ce qui a permis l’exceptionnelle stabilité d’un empire si durable.

Attractiveness and mobility networks: seducing, welcoming and integrating
As part of the study day "Attractiveness and Mobility Networks," PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars are invited to explore the dynamics of attractiveness in individual and collective mobilities, from the Bronze Age to the modern era. The event focuses on the legal, political, and social mechanisms implemented to attract, welcome, and integrate individuals into networks. It also examines the formal and informal circulation of information, as well as the processes of community clustering. Particular attention will be given to both the successes and failures of these mechanisms of attractiveness.

Les sociétés anciennes, loin d’être isolées ou déconnectées, étaient liées, à tous points de vue, les unes aux autres dans « un tout petit monde » qu’est celui de la Méditerranée. Elles étaient parcourues par des échanges de nature diverse (économique, politique, social et religieux ou symbolique). Cette journée sera consacrée aux échanges et aux contacts culturels dans le domaine du sacré et des pratiques rituelles et cultuelles collectives ou privées, communautaires ou domestiques. Notre voyage diachronique sur une aire géographique étendue, nous mènera des rives de l’Égypte et de la Phénicie jusqu’en Méditerranée Occidentale, couvrant alors toute l’Antiquité.

Engagés dans la révolution industrielle qui permit à la fois une plus grande mobilité dans l’Europe et le développement des projets transnationaux, les ingénieurs et les architectes européens se retrouvèrent, au cours du XIXe siècle, confrontés dans le bassin méditerranéen à l’héritage antique dans toute sa splendeur. Cette journée a pour objectif de réunir des chercheurs traitant ces différents aspects de la rencontre de ces corps de métier avec l’Antiquité classique et d’offrir ainsi un panorama de ce phénomène au XIXe siècle et jusqu’à la Grande Guerre du siècle suivant.

We invite archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, media and communication scholars, heritage curators, and witnesses to discuss these pioneering figures, focusing on their excavation methods, conservation techniques, and efforts to share knowledge about their archaeological finds.

Spatialité et diachronie de la gestion de l’eau en Méditerranée
The conference organised on 28 and 29 November 2024 as part of Marina Covolan's CIVIS3i SeBNA - Water distribution systems in the ancient world: forms of continuity, permanence and subsistence in contemporary society, focuses on the supply, storage and disposal of water over the centuries. The aim is to compare technologies, structures and knowledge that are distant in time and space, but which seem to recur and have many points in common. Around a dozen French and European colleagues from Scotland, Spain, Italy and Sweden will be taking part, covering a wide range of subjects and fields. There will also be a poster session, mainly by young researchers working on current projects or PhD.

This preservation has been achieved at the cost of constantly reinventing the representation of kings and their institutional function.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique
Plus de vingt ans après la parution décisive des Monumenta linguae Messapicae (2002), après les résultats considérables obtenus par les fouilles des dernières décennies, et après la synthèse récente de Joachim Matzinger (2019) sur la langue messapienne qui a permis de relancer sur des bases solides la discussion des inscriptions en langue locale, le colloque international « Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique » a pour objectif de faire dialoguer les épigraphistes et les linguistes spécialistes des textes en langue messapienne et les archéologues spécialistes de la culture matérielle en Messapie.

Black Sea archaeology has always captivated the interest of scholars, because of its unique topography and diachronically multi-ethnic historical landscape.The previous decade was a particularly challenging period for archaeological research worldwide due to the new realities imposed by the pandemic, the extraordinary political and socio-economic factors, and the long-lasting crisis in the Humanities and Arts. In spite of all this, excavations, systematic surveys, remote sensing and geophysical prospections, were undertaken in numerous coastal and inland sites along the Euxine, while equally productive were research projects on specific monuments or aspects of the material culture. Aiming to bring forth the latest advances accomplished in the field, the Department of Black Sea Studies at the Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, are organizing an International Conference on The Archaeological Work in the Greek Settlements of the BlackSea and their Environs during the Last Decade.
