The Art at the time of Michel Sittow (c. 1469-1525)
The year 2025 marks the 500th anniversary of Michel Sittow’s death in his hometown of Reval (now Tallinn). Sittow’s life, career, and œuvre exemplify how, in the Late Medieval and Early Modern world, professional mobility was no less significant than it is today. The seminar aims to explore the international visual and political contexts surrounding Sittow in order to better understand his experiences within the artistic production and visual culture of late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Europe.

Comment associe-t-on les différentes formes du visuel et du textuel dans ce contexte ? Comment l’alliance entre le texte et l’image a-t-elle été intégrée dans les processus de la réception de la Grèce ancienne ? Qu’apporte la collaboration de la création littéraire et de la création visuelle aux différentes formes de la réception de la Grèce ancienne ? Quels aspects de l’Antiquité grecque, réelle ou imaginée, sont particulièrement mis en valeur grâce au dialogue entre les textes et les images dans les œuvres littéraires, historiques et philosophiques ?

La réception des mythes grecs liés à la nature et au vivant. Textes et images (XIVe-XVIe siècle)
Ce colloque international, organisé dans le cadre de l’ERC AGRELITA, rassemble des chercheurs et chercheuses autour de la réception des mythes grecs relatifs à la nature et au vivant dans les textes, manuscrits et imprimés, réalisés entre 1300 et les années 1550. Il pose la question de la fortune, de l’appropriation, de la réinterprétation et des nouvelles exploitations de ces mythes de la Grèce ancienne dans l’Europe médiévale et renaissante.

Alexander Hispanus : nouveaux regards sur Alexandre le Grand dans les cultures ibériques médiévales
Alexandre le Grand est l’une des figures centrales de la culture lettrée médiévale tout autour de la Méditérranée et bien au-delà ; c’est également le cas en péninsule Ibérique, en particulier à partir des XIIe-XIIIe siècles. Les études sur ce sujet ont connu une impulsion fondamentale il y a 25 ans avec la publication, en 1999, de La translation d’Alexandre d’Amaia Arizaleta. Il s’agit par conséquence d’un moment idéal pour faire un bilan sur les fruits portés par l’étude de l’Alexandre ibérique pendant les deux dernières décennies, ainsi que sur le travail qui reste à faire sur ce sujet.

The fortune, reinterpretations and new uses of these myths of ancient Greece in medieval and Renaissance Europe will be explored.

Chaucer in the Age of Medievalism

Far from being confined to his era, Geoffrey Chaucer's work continues to resonate through the ages, inspiring a multitude of post-medieval representations. The poet himself remains a regularly invoked figure, sometimes even without direct connection to his texts, suggesting an autonomous legacy of Chaucer both as a man and an artist. Whether through the prism of cinema, music, theater, television, poetry, or other artistic forms, the poet remains an endless source of inspiration and reinterpretation. This conference invites us to question how adaptations and reinterpretations of Chaucer and/or his work by artists from diverse cultural backgrounds enrich our understanding of his legacy. His various incarnations over the centuries raise fascinating issues regarding intercultural dialogue, the politics of memory, and the evolution of popular culture.

9e rencontres médiévales de Trizay
Les rencontres médiévales de Trizay s’adressent depuis plusieurs années à un large public réunissant professionnels de la recherche archéologique et historique et amateurs ou curieux désireux d’en savoir plus sur l’art du Moyen Âge. La journée du samedi 25 mai offre cette année un programme centré autour de la découverte, parfois fortuite, de décors monumentaux, des méthodes qui permettent de les analyser et d’une réflexion sur leur conservation et leur restauration. Y seront évoqués différents exemples de recherches menées sur des décors sculptés, qu’ils soient en pierre ou en stuc, ou de peintures murales.

On the occasion of the restoration of the great Maestà and the Mocking of Christ, the Louvre Museum is organizing an exposition from January to May of 2025, themed as a sort of “file” concerning these two masterpieces of the artist. Issue 58 of Technè wishes to accompany this show by gathering together contributions pertaining to the materiality of painted works from the second half of the thirteenth century in Tuscany.

Inventing Past Narratives. Venice and the Adriatic Space (13th-15th centuries)
This conference aims to explore the dialogue between Venice and the Adriatic area from a specific perspective: the construction of the past. We would like to create a dialogue between specialists from various disciplines and also examine the validity of interdisciplinary approaches at the intersection of different cultural fields: textual and visual, material, and historiographic. The chronological and geographical perspective chosen covers the late Middle Ages and the early modern age and focuses on the interaction between Venice and other centres in the Adriatic space.

Medieval musicology conference May 2020, calls for papers
Les rencontres de musicologie médiévale seront un lieu d’échanges entre musicologues médiévistes, chercheurs des disciplines connexes, ainsi que les divers acteurs de la musique et la musicologie médiévale. Elles seront l’occasion d’entendre des communications scientifiques pendant lesquelles seront présentés des travaux achevés, des recherches en cours ou des projets. S’y ajoutera un volet de réflexion disciplinaire sur la recherche et l’enseignement de la musique médiévale mené sous forme de courtes communications, de tables rondes et d’ateliers.

Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages
Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)
Spaces, images, rituals
From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

Funerary sculpture: from creation to Musealization
The Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) and the Instituto de História da Arte (IHA) of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH/NOVA), along with the Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas Artes (CIEBA) of the Faculdade de Belas Artes of the Universidade de Lisboa, and in collaboration with the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, are organizing the International Congress “Souls of Stone. Funerary Sculpture: from the Creation to the Musealization”. Historians, museologists, restorers and all the researchers in general working on the topic are invited to submit proposals
