Alexander Hispanus : nouveaux regards sur Alexandre le Grand dans les cultures ibériques médiévales

Alexandre le Grand est l’une des figures centrales de la culture lettrée médiévale tout autour de la Méditérranée et bien au-delà ; c’est également le cas en péninsule Ibérique, en particulier à partir des XII^e-XIII^e siècles. Les études sur ce sujet ont connu une impulsion fondamentale il y a 25 ans avec la publication, en 1999, de La translation d’Alexandre d’Amaia Arizaleta. Il s’agit par conséquence d’un moment idéal pour faire un bilan sur les fruits portés par l’étude de l’Alexandre ibérique pendant les deux dernières décennies, ainsi que sur le travail qui reste à faire sur ce sujet.

De la page manuscrite aux bòti de carton : usages prophylactiques et propitiatoires du papier

Italie et par-delà, Moyen Âge – Époque moderne

À la faveur de l’histoire culturelle des matériaux initiée depuis le material turn, des auteurs démontrent depuis peu la resémantisation spécifique au papier à la Renaissance : prenant progressivement la relève du parchemin en tant que support consacré des sacræ paginæ de l’histoire sainte, le papier est alors perçu comme « substance de la grâce divine », y compris lorsqu’il est utilisé pour les ex-votos et effigies votives (Chessa, 2019). Nous proposons donc d’étudier conjointement les étapes matérielles de transformation du papier et les vertus métamorphiques, effectives et imaginaires, dont cette matière malléable était investie. Des questions connexes à notre sujet ne manqueront pas d’être ponctuellement soulevées, telles : la définition des critères d’usages du papier en regard de ceux du parchemin ; la question des occurrences de la préservation d’opérations manuscrites face à la généralisation progressive de l’imprimerie et de l’image gravée.

The workshop invites mainly, but non-exclusively, Master’s, PhD students and early career researchers of history, archival studies, archaeology, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, palynology, and palaeoclimatology. Three main themes will be examined: Primary sources, be they written documents, paleodata, or archeological material; Environmental transformations in periods of political, social and economic change; Connections between regional and local environmental transformations.

This conference aims to explore the dialogue between Venice and the Adriatic area from a specific perspective: the construction of the past. We would like to create a dialogue between specialists from various disciplines and also examine the validity of interdisciplinary approaches at the intersection of different cultural fields: textual and visual, material, and historiographic. The chronological and geographical perspective chosen covers the late Middle Ages and the early modern age and focuses on the interaction between Venice and other centres in the Adriatic space.

Geographical Mobility and Cultural Itineraris during the Late Miggle Ages

This congress seeks to take an interdisciplinary approach to a specific aspect of geographical and cultural mobility during the Late Middle Ages: the relationship between the geographical routes and itineraries taken by texts, books, artworks, and, in their wake, cultural ideas and tendencies. It will give special consideration to the Occitan-Catalan area as the starting, middle, and final points of these journeys. To investigate this topic, the focus will be on figures who are often left on the margins of study: the intermediaries and agents responsible for the transfer culture. Oral accounts, music, written texts, and artworks were all physically and intellectually transported by agents who were often under the cover of anonymity; this includes scribes, translators, minstrels, cantors, artists, and patrons or promoters, but also other figures such as pilgrims, students, clerks, diplomats, and merchants. These all played a fundamental role in developing, disseminating, and circulating ideas, and encouraged cultural and intellectual mobility in Europe.

Ce quatrième atelier de formation doctorale s’inscrit dans le prolongement direct de la scuola di alti studi dottorali qui, de 2004 à 2016, a constitué un lieu de formation de pointe pour les jeunes chercheurs consacrant leurs recherches à l’étude de la culture locale. L’objectif des ateliers est l’étude des sociétés urbaines du Moyen Âge, en mettant l’accent sur les systèmes politiques et les différentes manifestations de l’imaginaire urbain et en portant le regard sur toutes les villes du bassin méditerranéen – celles de l’Occident chrétien, celles de la zone d’influence byzantine et celles des régions sous domination islamique. Women and Violence in the Late Medieval Mediterranean, ca. 1100-1500

A two-days international conference

The last decades have witnessed an increased interest in research on the relationship between women and violence in the Middle Ages, with new works both on female criminality and on women as victims of violence. The contributions of gender theory and feminist criminology have renewed the approached used in this type of research. Nevertheless, many facets of the complex relationship between women and violence in medieval times still await to be explored in depth. This conference aims to understand how far the roots of modern assumptions concerning women and violence may be found in the late medieval Mediterranean, a context of intense cultural elaboration and exchange which many scholars have indicated as the cradle of modern judicial culture. While dialogue across the Mediterranean was constant in the late Middle Ages, occasions for comparative discussion remain rare for modern-day scholars, to the detriment of a deeper understanding of the complexity of many issues. Thus, we encourage specialists of different areas across the Mediterranean (Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Islamic world) to contribute to the discussion. What were the main differences and similarities? How did these change through time? What were the causes for change? Were coexisting assumptions linking femininity and violence conflicting or collaborating?

La première rencontre du projet AcTo est l’occasion de présenter les projets et les ressources numériques existantes en occitan médiéval et d’entamer un dialogue visant à créer des interactions nouvelles. En particulier les chercheurs sont actifs dans les domaines de recherche suivants : développement de dictionnaires informatisés et ressources lexicales numériques pour l’occitan médiéval ; constitution d’éditions électroniques de textes des troubadours et d’autres textes en occitan, de bibliographies électroniques ; développement d’outils et algorithmes pour le traitement automatique de l’occitan ; création de ressources ontologiques, géo-historiques et/ou cartographiques pour la reconstruction de l’espace occitan médiéval, et leur utilisation pour l’annotation et l’enrichissement de documents ; développement d’un cadre théorique et méthodologique pour la philologie numérique de l’occitan médiéval.

Cathedrals and Mosques: Building Urban Memories and Landscapes in Southern Europe (12th - 14th centuries)

This international conference will discuss interdisciplinary questions regarding the importance of cathedrals and mosques in the definition of memory and urban landscape in the medieval Mediterranean from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Our research aims at analysing the role these two buildings played in configuring the urban fabric of the Mediterranean world. One of our primary objectives is to understand how these buildings defined medieval landscape and urban space. How did they modify and condition the social and functional organisation of their urban surroundings? What architectural features contributed to their place in civic memory (decoration, architectural style and building techniques)? We are interested in the place they occupy in their cities’ urban planning and topography.

Les hommes donnent des noms propres à eux-mêmes, à d’autres êtres vivants qui leur sont le plus familiers (les animaux domestiques), à certains objets (les épées des chevaliers) et enfin aux lieux. Dans le dernier cas, ces noms peuvent être descriptifs, commémoratifs (d’un homme ou d’un événement) ou invocatoires (noms de saints notamment). Ils s’appliquent à l’origine à un lieu « ponctuel » (habitat ou élément bien caractérisé de l’environnement), en suivant des processus de nomination dont les acteurs nous échappent le plus souvent ; l’usage pesant d’un poids considérable dans l’emploi de ces toponymes, il est probable que ce sont les usagers eux-mêmes qui jouent un rôle déterminant, sinon dans le choix initial, au moins dans la perpétuation des noms.

Le colloque aborde le thème de l'itinérance en l’appliquant de manière privilégiée à l’espace maritime de la Méditerranée dans toute son étendue et toutes ses cultures, du Moyen Âge à la première modernité. Il rend compte des modalités, des enjeux des circulations de personnes autour des ports du bassin méditerranéen, dans leur dimension historique comme imaginaire. Les communications s’appuient sur un corpus varié de textes (récits de voyage, pèlerinages, hagiographies, récits de vie, registres officiels, lettres, témoignages, iconographie, documents d’archive, traités, poésie, littérature narrative) et de langues (arabe, français, italien, espagnol, anglais) et se situent au carrefour de la littérature, l’histoire, l'histoire de l'art et l’archéologie. La construction de cet espace, à la fois réel et mental, s'appuie sur la mobilité de personnes forcée (exil politique et religieux), l'errance (sans destination précise) comme l'itinéraire planifié (commercial, militaire, politique, diplomatique), les transferts culturels et la symbolique de la mer.

This two-day international conference aims to highlight recent and challenging interdisciplinary studies dealing with complex historical climate/society interactions in Mediterranean during the last two millennia. The study of these existing connections can help in better understanding the role played by past climatic events in the eruption of regional conflicts, in forced migration and displacement of people, in periodically appearing infectious disease outbreaks or in subsistence crises like food shortages and famines Similarly, it seems necessary to identify and analyze socio-economic and technological responses (e.g. water supply systems) together with mitigation and general adaptation strategies, insofar as they existed, to cope with climate change.
