The French Revolution and the Sacred
Global and Contemporary Perspectives (18th c. – present)
In the years leading up to the bicentenary commemorations of 1989, a new liberal interpretation of the French Revolution challenged a long-lived socialist one. In contrast to the Marxist view of a “bourgeois revolution” with popular support, the liberal historiography has recurrently emphasized the role of “revolutionary ideology” and the “collective mentality” which led to the episode of the “Terror”. We might take the end of Cold War binary frameworks as an opportunity to move beyond this long-lasting interpretive divide, and to reinvestigate how the Revolution transformed ideas of the sacred and has itself been sacralized.

De nombreux historiens, chercheurs et universitaires se retrouveront ainsi pour composer un large portrait de Rochambeau à travers leurs spécialités respectives et pour participer au renouvellement de l'histoire de la guerre.

Ordres et désordres dans les sociétés américaines
Normes, représentations, contestations (XVIe-XXIe siècle)
Après avoir interrogé les bouleversements et les liens sociaux lors de ses deux dernières éditions, les journées d’études doctorales du laboratoire Mondes américains proposent de poursuivre la réflexion autour de la stabilité et du changement dans les sociétés américaines en s’intéressant à la notion d’ordre, et à son corollaire, le désordre. Depuis la construction d’un ordre colonial au XVIe siècle jusqu’aux désordres suscités par l’assaut contre le Capitole le 6 janvier 2021 et son pendant brésilien du 8 janvier 2023, le continent américain constitue un terrain privilégié pour mener cette réflexion.

Dans sa troisième année, ce séminaire explore une question à laquelle les spécialistes d’époques historiques très variées ont répondu de manière très diverse : quelles temporalités choisir pour ce que l’on appelle « capitalisme » ? Les choix en ce domaine entraînent aussi des choix définitionnels, mais notre hypothèse est qu’il sera plus facile de préciser les termes et les enjeux, et de construire un dialogue productif entre positions théoriques différentes, si la discussion porte sur les rythmes chronologiques, sur la périodisation, sur des moments identifiables et délimitables qui permettraient de baliser de quel « capitalisme » chacun parle, et de situer la discussion dans l’épaisseur des pratiques. Nous prendrons comme point de référence les évolutions en Amérique du Nord et chercherons à les confronter principalement à celles de l’Europe de l’Ouest, sans nous interdire d’explorer d’autres régions.

This one-day symposium for PhD students and early-career researchers aims to reflect on the French fantasies of North American authors and, conversely, on the North American fantasies of their French receptors and intermediaries. Participants are encouraged to think about the ways in which misunderstandings shaped the transatlantic literary relations which developed between North America and France from the 18th century up to the present days. The symposium hopes to foster discussions about these misunderstandings along three lines of investigation : that of literary criticism, with a focus on the emergence of a ‘fantasy of France’ in the works of North American authors (and on the disenchantments and surprises that go hand in hand with fantasies) ; that of the French reception of these same writers ; and, finally, that of translation.

Pour Nis Gron, « William Whittington a démontré combien Alien (1979) a été un tremplin essentiel qui a montré l’importance et a permis le développement de la bande sonore, notamment dans l’utilisation expressionniste des effets sonores, des sons ambiants et des bruitages dans les films de science-fiction ». La science-fiction joue avec les complexités et les contradictions des « sons et silences » à travers les bandes sonores et au sein des intrigues.

Historical destinies as the foundation of legitimacy
The biographical genre in pop cultural studies
The biographical genre has place of pride in Hollywood and in popular culture in general, understandably so: it brings together the pseudo-legitimacy of the period film and the widespread appetite for tales of remarkable destinies. Biographies can be found in films and series of course, and in traditional or graphic novels , but also in music , stage musicals , and even video game.Rewriting and romanticizing are cornerstones of the genre. They are a way for biographical fictions to turn historical facts into narratives that will be both accessible to the general public and bankable. This raises the question: who is pictured and, to some extent, mythologized, in biographical fiction? The issue of the lack of representation also comes to mind: are there any categories of people whose biographies are not fictionalized, or have only become an object of fiction recently?

Telling, exhibiting and commemorating minority histories in the United States
U.S. museums and historic sites, and minority narratives
Critical perspectives have contributed to the development of research on minority histories, which can be approached in two ways: on the one hand from the point of view of the domination that is exercised, on the other hand from the point of view of the experiences of members of the minority. Minority narratives mobilize collective memories and processes of patrimonialization and different mediations of history, notably in the school and medias. We propose to focus on one of their concrete forms, namely museums and heritage sites. Museums are indeed at the focus of political and historiographic issues in the way they articulate, or not, the narrative of minorities and the national narrative.The question of the mediation of history, here approached through the prism of museum institutions and heritage sites, as well as the articulation between past and present, will be our focus.

When New York looks at the School of Paris (1930-1950)
Reception, rereadings, and appropriations
The dialogue that the Musée de l’Orangerie has chosen to establish between the School of Paris painter Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943) and the American Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), affords researchers the opportunity to explore the impact on the then-nascent American Abstract Expressionism movement by the art produced by European artists living in Paris during the interwar period. This symposium aims to revisit the sources to better understand this history and encourages candidates to participate in a review of what was visible of European art in the United States before 1950. It also aims to examine the conditions of the birth of American Abstract Expressionism in its relationship to the European, and particularly French, figurative tradition, in the specific context of the Second World War.

Ce colloque international se fixe comme objectif de faire revivre ces hauts-lieux d’une culture populaire dans les sociétés européennes, méditerranéennes et nord-américaines, pour une période qui s’étend du milieu du XVIIIe siècle jusqu’aux débuts du XXe siècle. De nombreuses questions se posent dans ce contexte, en commençant par la nature des établissements eux-mêmes et leur inscription dans la ville ou le village : que savons-nous de la topographie des cafés, tavernes, etc. (leur densité, leur rapport à l’espace religieux, sportif à la fin du XIXe siècle…), de leur architecture et de leur décoration, et de la figure du tavernier et cafetier elle-même, susceptible de revêtir un rôle important au niveau social et politique, mais aussi économique en tant qu’entrepreneur de divertissements ?

ILA conference: Here, there and elsewhere: the Americas and trans-imperial, trans-colonial and trans-national mobilities in the Americas (16th-21st centuries)
Le projet exploratoire ILA s’inscrit dans les démarches innovantes autour de la notion du « transtionalisme » développées par les études des migrations, en lien avec les recherches transatlantiques (Atlantic History) et l’histoire mondiale (Global History), particulièrement actives depuis ces deux dernières décennies. De nombreux travaux et projets comparatifs ont vu le jour entre spécialistes de ce que l’on a appelé l’histoire « coloniale », l’histoire des empires, l’histoire des constructions nationales (nation building) et les migration studies. Fort de ces approches, le projet ILA entend expertiser, avec une dimension résolument interdisciplinaire, les différentes acceptions de la notion de transnationalisme – notion dont la portée reste encore à déterminer –, afin d’étudier son impact sur la construction des Amériques de la période moderne à la période contemporaine.

Race and Class in Britain and America, 17th-19th centuries
This conference will question how developing discourses of race came to structure the societies of Britain and America in the early modern period. It hopes to explore the way discourses of race and class interacted with each other, and how the vocabulary of social strata overlapped with the language of race. How were the bodies and minds of the upper ranks considered to differ from those of other people during these periods? How important indeed was the idea of the physical body in rank distinction, and how did this square with the notions of pure blood that underpinned both “race” and hereditary privilege? In what ways were some groups “naturally” privileged or “naturally” excluded? Were social minorities like indigents or women marginalized or stigmatized similarly to Africans or Native Americans?

L’atelier est le lieu par excellence du travail artistique. Il est à la fois un espace matériel, une unité de vie et un creuset des formes. Pourtant, il reste souvent un monde en soi aux yeux de la tradition historiographique, c’est-à-dire une unité close sur elle-même, qui recèle le secret du travail artistique en même temps qu’il le dissimule. En confrontant l’histoire de l’art aux autres sciences sociales et à l’expertise des sciences de la conservation et de la restauration, on interrogera les formes du travail collectif, la construction de la valeur, l’élaboration et la transmission de savoirs et de savoir-faire dans les pratiques artistiques.

Abortion in the British Isles, France and North America (Canada, USA), 19th-21st centuries
L’année 2018 marque le cinquantenaire de l’entrée en vigueur en Grande-Bretagne de la Loi relative à l’interruption volontaire de grossesse (IVG) le 27 avril 1968 (adoptée en 1967), l’anniversaire des 45 ans, aux États-Unis, de l’arrêt de la Cour suprême Roe vs. Wade du 22 janvier 1973, ainsi que le 25e anniversaire de l’arrêt de la Cour suprême du Canada mettant fin à des conditions très restrictives d’IVG (R. v. Morgentaler). Un référendum sur l’abrogation de l’Article 8 de la Constitution de la République d’Irlande sera également organisé en 2018 et pourrait mener à une dépénalisation de l’avortement en Irlande. Par ailleurs, le parlement britannique a décidé en juillet 2017 d’autoriser les femmes en Irlande du Nord (où la Loi relative à l’IVG britannique ne s’applique pas) à procéder à une IVG sur le sol de la Grande-Bretagne et à faire prendre en charge leurs frais médicaux (ce qui n’était pas le cas jusque-là). Un état des lieux sera donc le bienvenu afin d’apprécier en France et à l’échelle internationale (Royaume-Uni, Irlande, Amérique du Nord) l’histoire et l’évolution de l’IVG.

Race and class in Great Britain and America (17th-19th centuries)
Les nouvelles populations rencontrées en Afrique et en Amérique suite aux premières découvertes à l’époque moderne, captèrent l’intérêt des naturalistes européens qui cherchèrent à catégoriser l’espèce humaine en différents sous-groupes raciaux ayant des traits biologiques et moraux communs. De cette classification émergea l’idée de supériorité « naturelle » d’un groupe par rapports aux autres, celui de l’élite blanche européenne. Ainsi, les taxonomies raciales qui se développèrent aux XVIIe, XVIIIe et XIXe siècles en Grande-Bretagne et en Amérique étaient et continuent d’être inséparables des questions de classe et de hiérarchisation sociale.
