« Page 19 » - Bulletin des doctorants - Varia

Comme chaque année, le comité éditorial de la revue Page 19 éditée par les doctorants du Centre d’histoire du XIX^e siècle (université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et Sorbonne Université) propose à de jeunes chercheurs dix-neuviémistes de publier dans la rubrique Varia un article en lien avec leurs recherches. Cet appel à contributions s’adresse notamment aux doctorants en histoire, histoire des arts et littérature, quels que soient leurs domaines géographiques et thèmes de recherche pourvu qu’ils s’inscrivent au moins partiellement dans l’étude d’un siècle qui s’ouvre avec l’« ère des révolutions » et s’achève au lendemain de la première guerre mondiale.

Les Doctoriales du Centre d’Histoire du XIXe siècle constituent une occasion de réunir les doctorant·e·s du Centre pour échanger sur des thématiques communes, elles accueillent aussi volontiers des communications de jeunes chercheuses et de jeunes chercheurs extérieur.e.s. Elles se structurent en deux demi-journées, consacrées respectivement à une interrogation méthodologique et à une interrogation thématique. Pour l’édition 2024, les sujets retenus sont les suivants : « Archives sensibles : une approche différente de l’histoire contemporaine » et « Lieux mystérieux, une histoire à dévoiler ».

Dramaturges, traductrices, actrices et critiques de théâtre en Europe du XVIIe au XIXe siècle

Les compétences des femmes dans le domaine du théâtre, de la littérature, de la poésie, des essais, des lettres, des brochures pamphlets, des articles de journaux et de la traduction ont joué un rôle significatif dans la culture et la société du XVIIIe siècle en France, selon l’ouvrage de Christie McDonald. Ce colloque se penche sur la contribution intellectuelle des femmes, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur le théâtre et en comparant les situations du XVIIe au XIXe siècle en Europe.

Réputation contestée – réputation paradoxale ?

(XVIe-XVIIIe siècle)

La réputation peut potentiellement se détacher d’une vérité factuelle. Elle peut être écran de projection plutôt que représentation à l’identique. Cela augmente sa plasticité et l’intérêt de son analyse par l’investissement discursif, notamment à l’endroit où elle fait l’objet de constructions contradictoires, de contestations qui révèlent des ordres discursifs divergents, des critères de jugement discordants. En résultent des réputations paradoxales, dues aux constructions contradictoires qui ne sont pas solubles dans un consensus social, mais relèvent de groupes sociaux et milieux divers, aux autorités concurrentes, et permettent ainsi d’appréhender les dynamiques sociales à l’œuvre. La journée d’étude s’intéressera à différents types de réputation paradoxale, ainsi qu’aux représentations de ces réputations complexes, aux XVI^e-XVIII^esiècles, dans les différents domaines sociaux, historiques, littéraires, artistiques, etc.

Samurai and Knights, Medieval and Early Modern Worlds East and West in Texts and Films: Inter-Cultural Echoes and Historical, Mythological and Aesthetic Perspectives

This international conference will explore the cultural differences, similarities and potential bridges between the eastern and western worlds as envisaged during the medieval and early modern periods, including their represention in art, texts and legends, poetry, and pictorial and cinematographic productions. Since the areas of investigation are expansive, Japan is granted a primary place as the pivotal axis for the eastern world. This does exclude Persia, India or China. The northern, English and Mediterranean European areas will primarily represent the occidental world.

Revue « Traverse », 2025/3

La revue Traverse lance un appel à contribution sur le thème des antiféminismes. Revue transpériode et bilingue français-allemand, la revue cherche des contributions qui examinent les antiféminismes sous différentes perspectives pour amener des éclairages variés. Si l’antiféminisme à proprement parler se situe essentiellement dans la période contemporaine (long XIX^e siècle – XXI^e siècle), les propositions portant sur des manifestations misogynes prenant place dans des périodes antérieures, et pouvant ainsi être considérées comme des mouvements précurseurs de l’antiféminisme, sont également bienvenues. Il en va de même pour les contributions conceptuelles qui s’intéressent aux questions de définition et s’interrogent sur les différences et les points communs entre l’antiféminisme, la misogynie et le sexisme.

Entre France et Allemagne, théorie et pratique cryptographiques (1300-1800)

L’histoire de la cryptographie constitue un champ émergent de l’histoire des sciences mais aussi de l’histoire institutionnelle, politique, sociale et culturelle de l’Europe. Souvent mobilisée en annexe de travaux sur l’histoire diplomatique, elle s’est développée grâce à l’initiative du réseau européen HistoCrypt (auquel appartiennent certains membres du comité scientifique) et à l’émergence des intelligence studies. Ce colloque se propose donc de contribuer à la structuration de ce nouveau champ d’étude, pour la période moderne (1300-1800) en interrogeant le rapport entre théorie et pratique cryptographiques.

Faire le fou. L’art des bouffons dans l’Europe moderne

Playing Fools? The Art of the Jester in Modern Europe

The jester is a paradoxical figure: a subordinate included in elite social circles. Thus, he is an outsider, albeit a remarkably proficient one. Jesters, comprising fools, dwarfs, and other “monsters” – both men and women, often with disabilities – are itinerant, travelling from one court to another or from the precursors of psychiatric hospitals to the realms of royalty. The conference aims to scrutinise the competition between artists and jesters, with the latter frequently obtaining more stable patronage than poets and painters. Our goal is to establish the status of jesters between subalternity and disability, applying the methodologies of historical anthropology, social history, and art history.

Ecological Grief and Mourning in the Literature and the Arts in the Anglophone World (18th – 21st c.)

This conference proposes to explore the concept of ecological grief and the fast-growing body of theoretical work that is developing around it against the background of the ongoing sixth-mass extinction and biodiversity loss. With this conference, we also wish to think about the longer history of ecological grief from the eighteenth century onwards, including by exploring some of the consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Is nature grievable? How do we grieve for it? What is the role of writers and artists in this individual and collective process? While to some, environmental grief gives way to desolation or an irredeemable sense of melancholy, others view it as a form of resilience or even a spur to action, a source of activism in art.

Conceptualizing Corruption: The “Old Regime” and the New Order in East-Central-South Europe (1750s-1850s)

During the age of revolutions, West European politicians, scholars, and popular writers often characterized South-East-Central Europe as a corrupt political space. Notables from the region routinely echoed these claims. Those in and outside of South-East-Central Europe mobilized commentaries on “corruption” for their own political, professional, and personal gains. They used the idea of corruption to assert, for instance, that they knew to run more honest and efficient administrations, military regimes, and commercial operations. The conference organizers welcome paper proposals that employ a (de)constructivist and/or sematic approach to study the concept corruption and its relationship to the rise of (West European) modernity. Submissions should focus on Central-South-East Europe from the 1750s to the 1850s. Applicants working on regional micro-histories that situate changing notions of “corruption” in a transnational context are especially encouraged to apply.

Imagining Italy

Space, Gender and Discourse in Women’s Writing (1789-1914)

This conference will explore women writers’ contributions to the representation of Italy in Europe, from the 19th century to the outbreak of the First World War. At a time when women were increasingly present in the public sphere, Italy was for them a source of particular interest and attention, as women writers began to contribute to a discourse that had previously been predominantly restricted to men. Through a cross-cultural and comparative perspective, the conference aims to intersect representations of space and notions of gender, in order to trace the construction and reappropriation of Italy by women authors.

This issue of European Drama and Performance Studies will look at the conditions under which child stage performers operate, in the light of recent research on “working childhood”, on the social history of performers, and on stages and performances that have long been in the shadows (curiosity shows, fairground shows, cultural activities outside European capitals). The aim will be to bring together case studies and also to offer summaries on this theme, with an emphasis on analyses of the 18th century and the early 19th century.

Elle est une revue quadrilingue, donc ouverte aux contributions en anglais, français, arabe et en langue amazigh. Residential Research School organisée à l’Institut d'études avancées (IEA) de Saint-Louis du Sénégal (juin 2024)

Financée par le CNRS la Residential Research School réunira des enseignant·es et chercheur·es des universités de différents pays francophones d’Afrique, d’Amérique et d’Europe pour encadrer quinze doctorants et doctorantes de sciences humaines et sociales sélectionné·es qui résideront pendant deux semaines à Saint-Louis du Sénégal et participeront aux ateliers seront organisés à l’Institut d’études avancées. Cette résidence vise à la fois à présenter des travaux classiques et récents sur les chiffres et leurs usages, en particulier les approches critiques de la quantification, à approfondir et renouveler les questionnements sur les chiffres, à impulser de nouvelles collaborations et provoquer des discussions entre les chercheurs, praticien·nes et étudiant·es afin d’encourager la formation d’une école doctorale hors les murs consacrée aux chiffres en Afrique francophone.

Since the creation in 1963 of the Organization of African Unity (forerunner of today's African Union), bilateral and multilateral intergovernmental cooperation initiatives have continued to multiply across the African continent, to the point where there are now over a hundred initiatives and institutions covering a wide range of fields: political, economic, commercial, customs, educational, cultural. This call for papers invites professors, doctors, PhD students and researchers in various fields (law, political science, international relations, international law, economics, international trade, etc.) to propose book chapters that can take stock of the situation, shed light on the challenges facing African integration, and reflect on the future prospects of such an integration dynamic.

Quand on évoque la « littérature » didactique ou exemplaire, le terme « littérature » renvoie seulement à un ensemble de textes plutôt qu’à la dimension « littéraire » de ce type de textes. Cependant, ce type de textes, subordonné au docere et placere, mérite-il d’être exclu de ce qui est considéré comme littéraire ? En quoi la contrainte de l’utile, de l’édification morale peut-elle avoir une vertu littéraire ? En quoi la littérature peut-elle avoir une vocation édificatrice ? Comment expliquer la marginalisation de ces textes ? Quelles nouvelles approches peut-on proposer pour définir la littérarité spécifique à ces textes ? Comment les auteur.e.s de la période étudiée réfléchissent à la possible dimension littéraire de leur texte ? Comment peut-on penser une conception large de la littérature, qui s’applique aux époques médiévales et modernes ?

Opportunities, limits and interpretation of the night from the Antiquity to the contemporary age

Everything about darkness differs according to a wide range of factors including historical age, society, gender, social class, occupations. In this sense, we mean everything that fills the night with life, from the economic, political, social, cultural and religious activities of human beings to the behavior of animals, anything that stimulates the senses, from shadows, street lighting, stars, nocturnal plant and animal life to human bodies shrouded in darkness. In short, everything that humans experience during the night, from everyday life to the parallel world of dreams or the unwelcome visitation of ghosts to pirate attacks. The purpose of the Student Conference is to analyze the night from a broad historical perspective, starting from the state of the art on the subject and arriving at new declinations of the night and its importance for human activities in the past.

V Centenaire de l'arrivée de Francisco de Vitoria en Castille (1523-24)

Francisco de Vitoria (vers 1483-1546) est une figure majeure de la scolastique. Il est principalement connu pour ses Relectiones (publiées en 1557) sur des questions liées à la colonisation espagnole des Amériques, et il est souvent appelé le père de l’« école de Salamanque » et le fondateur du droit international. Conçu à l’occasion du cinquième centenaire de l’arrivée de Vitoria en Castille (1523-24), ce colloque vise à changer le paysage historiographique actuel en examinant ses cours universitaires dans le contexte de la pensée scolastique et en comparant ses vues avec celles d’auteurs contemporains (principalement de ceux qu’il a rencontrés à l’Université de Paris, où il a étudié environ quinze ans). Dix-huit chercheurs examineront la pensée de Vitoria, de la métaphysique à l’éthique, de la théorie de l’âme à l’économie.
