  “Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

  Edited Collection

  This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

  Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain, comparative perspectives of a woman, writer, linguist and anthropologist

  Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain est née à Port-au-Prince en 1898 et morte au Nigéria en 1975. Elle est une anthropologue africaniste et une linguiste qui a mené beaucoup de recherches dans le champ des études haïtiennes. Première femme linguiste et anthropologue d’Haïti, elle fait partie des pionniers des études créoles et de l’oraliture. Au cours de sa carrière universitaire, elle a publié divers articles de référence sur des aspects de la vie sociale et culturelle d’Haïti et de certains pays africains notamment le Congo et le Nigéria. Ses études des contes haïtiens cherchent non seulement à les catégoriser, retracer leurs origines mais également à dégager leur structure. Dans l’objectif de remettre dans le débat le travail de cette chercheuse majeure dans les sciences humaines et sociales en Haïti, cette manifestation scientifique montrera l’importance des travaux de Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain pour la science, l’éducation et la culture et son héritage.

  Après avoir publié un recueil d'études générales sur la création poétique du chanteur Hubert-Felix Thiéfaine (Thiéfaine, poésie souterraine, Versailles, RKI Press, 2016, 17€), nous souhaitons continuer l’enquête directement sur les textes eux-mêmes, en les envisageant non plus cette fois dans l’ensemble biographique, thématique ou sociologique de l’œuvre tout entière, mais étudiés pour eux-mêmes, dans l’unité de sens que chaque chanson-poème présente. C’est ce que nous proposons de faire aujourd’hui, en analysant les paroles de plusieurs chansons emblématiques du chanteur, pour entrer dans le détail de quelques textes qui ont marqué la carrière de Thiéfaine.

  Postcolonial Literary Panel, SAES (French Society for English Studies) Conference

  “Rebirth” may also imply looking back at past historical moments with a new perspective, which for instance led Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies to be associated with Neo-Victorianism, and more precisely the “Neo-Victorian at sea” and a “global memory of the Victorian” (Elizabeth Ho). This panel will also discuss “renaissance” movements: can we consider that an indigenous literary renaissance has taken place in Canada, Australia or New Zealand? Has an increasing awareness of the need to protect the environment led to new literary practices and movements? The Renaissance involved the development of vernacular languages in literature; what has been the place of vernacular languages and oral literary practices in postcolonial literatures? Theory also evolves constantly: has postcolonial theory been renewed since the 1980s? In what ways?

  L'objectif de ce colloque est de mettre en évidence et d'interroger les circulations intellectuelles, en particulier littéraires, entre les continents africains et asiatiques depuis la conférence de Bandung.   The Wanderings of Modernism

  The return of peace in 1918 heralded a troubled period for Modernism. After years of tensions, the borders opened again: D.H. Lawrence travelled to France and Italy in 1919, while Joyce left the safe haven of Switzerland. But the euphoria and cosmopolitan openness of the early 1910s had receded in the aftermath of the horrors of war, as Joyce realised upon returning to Trieste, and personal tragedies compounded the general gloom. These comings and goings, however dire the circumstances, fostered new relations, and the encounters that took place in this period initiated a new phase of literary creation. Our aim will be to analyse the influence of this common experience of personal and cultural wandering in a shared moment of uncertainty, on post-war modernism.

  Migraciones e Independencias: dos siglos de testimonios y representaciones entre México, Centroamérica, España y Francia, 1820-2020

  La ville de Bordeaux a été le point de départ de milliers d’émigrants vers l’Amérique latine. Dans le sens contraire, du Mexique, commerçants, financiers, diplomates et étudiants, artistes et écrivains ont voyagé puis laissé des traces, des textes et des images diverses sur l’expérience vécue dans le pays d’accueil, l’expérience de l’identité étrangère, la xénophobie ou l’extranéité. Les recherches  proposées en réponse à cet appel à communication porteront sur les parcours migratoires, les expériences de voyage et les séjours entre le Mexique et l’Amérique centrale et d’autre part, l’Espagne ou la France, tout au long des deux siècles depuis les indépendances jusqu’à nos jours. Des résumés pourront aussi être proposés sur l’histoire des politiques migratoires mises en œuvre depuis le XIX^e siècle, l’installation des Espagnols Américains dans le sud-ouest de la France à la fin de la Guerre d’Indépendance (1810-1821)...

  Reassessing Bergson

  The thought of Henri Bergson (1859-1941), one of the most influential theorists of time of the twentieth century, has primarily been confined to the so-called “continental” tradition of philosophy. In the past few years this has started to change; his work has begun to receive ingenious reassessment from philosophers outside the field of “continental” philosophy in general and within analytic philosophy in particular. The aim of this conference is to capture this moment and use it to provide new perspectives on Bergsonian philosophy, expanding and reassessing Bergson’s legacy and producing a major permutation in the philosophy of time.

  Fantasy, science fiction and anthropology

  Depuis plusieurs années, le GARAE a fait de la relation séminale entre littérature et ethnologie l’un de ses objets de recherche privilégiés. Trois rencontres ont eu lieu en ses murs, chacune consacrée à des moments singuliers de notre histoire littéraire (romantisme, réalisme, régionalisme), et concrétisée par un ouvrage. L’exploration se poursuivra à l’occasion de journées d’études axées sur la fantasy, le fantastique et la science-fiction. Quoique relevant de genres sensiblement différents, toutes ces littératures présentent la faculté, comme décuplée, de révéler et de donner à comprendre l’Autre. Ainsi partagent-elles avec l’anthropologie la capacité à amplifier « les effets de monde », autrement dit à mettre en scène mille et une figures de l’altérité, interrogeant en retour ce qui fait notre humanité. Les rencontres que propose l’ethnopôle viseront à préciser ce cousinage et la manière dont il se réactualise ou se réinvente d’un genre narratif à l’autre.

  Thoughts of children's books in Europe in the 21st century

  Since their inception in 2014, the up to now two biennial conferences1 organized by the course team of the master’s degree in children’s literature of the department of education of Cergy University have taken a resolutely interprofessional direction and questioned youth literature from a comparative and international angle. The scientific questioning thus engaged has focused on the contemporary period, while leaving ample room for professionals from various walks to discuss children’s books as cultural productions aimed for young readers. The previous two biennials placed the focus of the reflection on objects ranging from original works to translated or adapted works. This line of questioning intersects in many points with the reflection which the Centre National de la Littérature pour la Jeunesse (CNLJ, BnF) has long been engaged in, as made evident through a number of joint projects conducted by both our university department and the CNLJ2. It is around these common interests that the project of a joint conference has matured over time, while the 2020 biennial now purports to shift the focus from objects proper (understood as books, writers, formats) to mediation practices making these objects (printed or digital) accessible to young readers across Europe.

  Semiotics in Algerian Academia

  State of the Art and Prospects

  Semiotics is a well-established discipline in European academia. However, it is a relatively new one in Algerian universities. Since the 1980s, semiotics has not ceased searching for its institutional place, especially in the fields of arts, languages, and communication sciences; and this has been undertaken within diverse areas of studies and diverse multilingual vistas. This scientific legacy that has been accumulated for nearly three decades deserves to undergo a retrospective synthesis and reappraisal. This will enable review the great articulations traced by semiotics in different research areas (literature, linguistics, communication, architecture, etc.). The upcoming colloquium will thus attempt to sketch an historical overview of semiotics in Algerian academia, from introductory courseson theory and methodology in undergraduate curricula, to more specialized and in-depth courses on the theoretical and epistemological foundations in graduate and postgraduate levels. It also intends to outline an overview of the somehow vivid scientific activity that has led to diverse and rich scientific production.
