The Changing City in Roman and Late Antique Africa: Actors and Scales of Transformation
Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le renouvellement des études sur l’urbanisme provincial romain, stimulé par les approches postcoloniales et par une attention accrue portée aux acteurs locaux. Appliquée à l’Afrique du Nord, cette perspective trouve dans l’épigraphie un terrain d’expression privilégié : les mutations urbaines y sont souvent perceptibles à travers des changements de titulature, des réajustements institutionnels, l’apparition ou la disparition de collèges civiques, ou encore la transformation des pratiques honorifiques.

Réactualisation des matériaux et savoir-faire préindustriels
Perspectives historiques
Faced with today's environmental and climatic challenges, architectural production needs to embrace a shift towards frugality, in particular through the use of bio- and geo-sourced materials. In this respect, pre-industrial knowledge and know-how can be particularly inspiring. The aim of this study day is to understand how to design, build and rehabilitate using ancient techniques. The aim is to examine gestures and know-how in relation to so-called traditional building materials. This one-day event will call on researchers to shed scientific light on these essential questions, so as to avoid falling into the irenic trap of a return to our roots, without misrepresenting them or greenwashing them. Adopting a historical perspective could be a way of avoiding this pitfall, contextualizing it and initiating a debate with the practitioners and future practitioners of tomorrow's architecture. This study day is aimed at students, teachers, researchers and anyone interested in learning more about these subjects. The aim is to develop an accurate awareness of materials and know-how.

RSSI (Revue sénégalaise des sciences de l’information)
Le laboratoire de recherche en sciences de l’information et de la communication (LARSIC) de l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, à travers sa revue le RSSI (Revue sénégalaise des sciences de l’information), porte une attention particulière aux traitement numérique et à la valorisation des manuscrits arabes et ajami. Les défis techniques que ces traitements induisent, les enjeux patrimoniaux qui y sont rattachés mais aussi les perspectives de recherche et de valorisation ouvertes en direction du grand public constituent autant d’éléments de réflexion sur lesquels nous souhaitons porter une attention particulière.

Prácticas y usos de la escritura en el imperio español
Seminario Transcribir América
“Transcribir América” es un proyecto de investigación sobre las estrategias escriturales elaboradas por los actores coloniales para dar a ver / “transcribir” las lejanas Indias españolas a las élites metropolitanas (siglos XV-XVIII). Asimismo, apunta a difundir el corpus de las fuentes estudiadas en una colección en construcción: el “Archivo Digital de Indias”. El seminario anual apunta a crear una red de historiadores para: discutir el concepto de “transcripción de América” e iniciar el debate a partir de estudios de casos procedentes de todas las áreas geográficas de las Indias españolas (América, África, Asia) entre los siglos XV y XVIII ; constituir un corpus de las fuentes manuscritas estudiadas y difundirlo valorando las transcripciones paleográficas (y las imágenes digitalizadas si existen) en el proyecto de colección del Archivo Digital de Indias.

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
Approaches to the history of berber
Perspectives on a language through the ages
Berber, a living language spoken throughout North Africa, has been the subject of significant linguistic research. However, relative to present-day Berber, earlier states of the language have received much less attention, and a global approach to its history has yet to be synthesized. In order to rebalance the situation and help fill in this gap, we propose to organize two international scientific meetings which will make it possible to draw up a survey of the available resources and to fix analytical priorities regarding documentary sources and historical linguistics, while creating a context for fruitful debate among researchers. We hope that this alliance of archaeologists, population geneticists, philologists, anthropologists, historians and linguists (descriptive, comparative, etc.) will be able to attain some of the goals identified.

L'université d'été internationale « Perception et représentation des frontières et des espaces frontaliers au Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne (IXe-XVIIIe siècle) » s'inscrit dans les renouvellements actuels de la recherche sur les espaces et les examine sous deux angles. D’une part, il s’agit de mettre en lumière les représentations des frontières dans les sources. D’autre part, l’atelier vise à contextualiser les zones frontalières dans leurs interdépendances régionales respectives. Ainsi, on pourra dépasser une approche essentialiste des espaces et prendre en compte leurs caractéristiques propres ainsi que les dynamiques qui les traversent.

The flower, the pig, the flask and the corpse - ecofacts and artifacts in funerary scenography
En archéologie, les rituels funéraires sont toujours complexes à appréhender, à restituer et à comprendre. Les travaux engagés sur cette thématique depuis quelques décennies ont mis en évidence la complexité des cérémonies au sein desquelles la création de la sépulture n’est qu’une étape. Les autres phases du rituel, comme la préparation du corps, le traitement des restes du bûcher en cas de crémation, les rituels funéraires et commémoratifs, sont souvent mal documentés tandis que les substances organiques ont rarement survécu à l’épreuve du temps. Parmi celles-ci, les offrandes biologiques (végétales / florales, alimentaires, cosmétiques, aromatiques, médicinales et magico-thérapeutiques…) posent de nombreux problèmes d’identification et d’interprétation dans le cadre des funérailles ou des commémorations.

The archaeology of Egypt: from excavations to the writing of history
Le département « Philosophie, histoire, sciences de l’homme » de bibliothèque nationale de France propose un cycle de conférences archéologiques dans le cadre d'une convention avec l'université Paris Sorbonne. Ce cycle archéologique est centré sur l'apport de l'archéologie française ou d'archéologues français à l'histoire. À travers l'exposé de travaux récents, des égyptologues évoqueront comment archéologie, matériel archéologique ou épigraphie dialoguent pour créer un discours historique, en répondant à des questions du type « que nous apprennent / confirment ces découvertes sur l'Histoire égyptienne / la vie en Égypte ? » etc. pour une approche plus didactique.

Marginal historical sources?
En s’intéressant aux graffiti et aux gravures rupestres, cette journée thématique vise à rendre accessibles des sources historiques à part entière, trop souvent considérées comme mineures mais aptes par leur caractère relativement marginal à éclairer des pans mal connus de l’histoire des pays d’islam au Moyen Âge, dans des domaines aussi variés que l’islamisation, la religiosité populaire, l’architecture navale ou l’organisation des espaces ruraux – y compris la gestion de l’eau. Une ouverture sur le monde chrétien occidental permet de mettre en exergue d’éventuels parallèles ou différences entre ces deux cultures.

On administrative and legal documents in Africa
Historians, anthropologists, linguists and specialists from other relevant disciplines are invited to submit proposals for articles in French or English devoted to the production, transmission and conservation of administrative and legal documents in Africa to the exclusion of texts from Western colonial administrations. The purpose is to establish a state-of-the-art account of African practices related to administrative and legal documents. Attention should be paid to documents that, often said to be “performative” and/or normative, are intended to have an effect, for instance: grants of donation, contracts, charters, funeral inscriptions, correspondence, inventories or any other “archived” documents. This special issue seeks to update the study of administrative and legal texts in Africa thanks to the advances made in research on “literacy” since the 1970s.

Ce séminaire, animé par des étudiants de Master, des doctorants et des enseignants de l’université d’Aix-Marseille / IREMAM, se propose de renouveler certaines approches en rapport avec l’histoire des écritures au Proche-Orient comme au Maghreb, à diverses périodes. Le séminaire sera l’occasion de s’interroger sur les statuts de l’écrit et de l’écriture dans les civilisations arabo-musulmane, persane, ottomane, berbère et hébraïque à la lumière de nouveaux documents ou matériaux.

Administrative and Legal Documentation in Pre-colonial Africa and Beyond
Fifth European Conference on African Studies (ECAS 5)
Historians, anthropologists as well as specialists of various scholarly traditions are invited to reflect on the question of production, transmission and preservation of administrative and legal documentation in pre-colonial Africa. The aim of this panel is to foster dialogue between scholars working on non-narrative sources, whether land charters, weddings contracts, deeds, funerary inscriptions or other archival materials. Presentations of methodological issues rather than case-studies would facilitate a comparative approach leading to a renewed understanding of the social organizations that produced these documents.
