Telling and exhibiting minorities in France and North America

Minorities and their museum mediations

In this symposium, we propose to examine the relationship between minorities and museums and sites of memory in North America and France and to abandon the majority viewpoint, expressed in terms of domination and assignment, to reframe the perspective. Situating ourselves from the point of view of the minority experience, we will be able to consider the minority’s agency. During this conference, we propose to bring together the perspectives of social science researchers and museum professionals to examine how minority history has found its place in museums in the United States, France and Canada, and the evolution of these narratives.

Telling, exhibiting and commemorating minority histories in the United States

U.S. museums and historic sites, and minority narratives

Alongside the national myth, which participates in the construction of an "imagined community", multiple narratives exist, either included as an aspect of the national narrative, or proposing a parallel or even adverse history. We would like to question the ways in which different minorities have sought to integrate their particular histories into the national narrative, to amend it, to contest it, or even to dissociate themselves by striving for the reappropriation of their autonomous history. Minority narratives mobilize collective memories and processes of patrimonialization and different mediations of history, notably in the school and medias. We propose to focus on one of their concrete forms, namely museums and heritage sites in the United States. Museums are indeed at the focus of political and historiographic issues in the way they articulate, or not, the narrative of minorities and the national narrative.

When New York looks at the School of Paris (1930-1950)

Reception, rereadings, and appropriations

The dialogue that the Musée de l’Orangerie has chosen to establish between the School of Paris painter Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943) and the American Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), affords researchers the opportunity to explore the impact on the then-nascent American Abstract Expressionism movement by the art produced by European artists living in Paris during the interwar period. This symposium aims to revisit the sources to better understand this history and encourages candidates to participate in a review of what was visible of European art in the United States before 1950. It also aims to examine the conditions of the birth of American Abstract Expressionism in its relationship to the European, and particularly French, figurative tradition, in the specific context of the Second World War.

Environmental Social Governance (ESG): Major Mover Towards Sustainable Energy Future

5th Annual North American Environment, Energy, & Natural Resources Conference

Even as the world shut down in 2020 from covid-19, ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) investing and principles accelerated their domination of the operation of and investment in the private sector. These accelerating trends came despite initial fears that the COVID crisis would slow consideration of ESG. In fact, ESG investments outperformed the broader market, and ESG related projects can command a premium in investment and lender interest. Historic fossil fuel emitters are not exempt. In a two month span in early 2021, several large legacy oil companies indicated an intent to become carbon neutral and to accelerate diversification into renewable energies.

Elles se situent dans la filiation des théories de la dépendance, du rattrapage économique et de la modernisation, notamment du pensamiento crítico latinoamericano. Elles s’intéressent aux phénomènes de marginalisation sociale et politique de certains groupes sociaux d’un point de vue épistémique et culturel. Les Études décoloniales, qui ne se cantonnent pas aux recherches faites par le groupe « Colonialidad/Modernidad/Decolonialidad », interrogent les rapports de pouvoir dans les contextes des Amériques (du Nord, du Centre, du Sud et Caraïbes).

Time at the Turn of the Twentieth Century in American-British Philosophy

Around the turn of the twentieth century, time became a major focus of American-British philosophy. Against a broadly Kantian-Hegelian backdrop, philosophers began developing new questions and theories about time. Shadworth Hodgson argued humans perceive a ‘specious present’, a short duration rather than an infinitesimally small one; this view was further developed by Mary Calkins and William James. J. M. E. McTaggart advanced a new argument for the unreality of time. A. N. Whitehead made time the foundation of his process philosophy. This event brings together philosophers from Europe and North America exploring this period that was to become defining for the contours of twentieth-century English-speaking philosophy of time. The event will deliberately be scheduled to be compatible with European and North American time zones.

Political Mobilization in the US: New Stakes and Evolutions

Les dernières élections présidentielles ont démontré la forte capacité de mobilisation de blocs d’électeurs bien connus depuis le début des années 1980 tels que les chrétiens évangéliques, toujours fidèles au parti républicain, mais aussi d’électeurs dont la volatilité est plus grande, sans oublier la portée de la mobilité démographique. Alors que l’État fédéral continue de se désengager du contrôle des lois et procédures électorales (à la suite de l’arrêt Shelby County v. Holder de 2013), des initiatives sont prises dans ce domaine par les citoyens (comme en Floride avec l’Amendement 4 destiné à réintégrer sur les listes électorales les anciens détenus), mais aussi par les gouverneurs comme les législateurs de certains États pour encadrer ces procédures ainsi que l’accès aux urnes. Dans ce contexte, le record de participation de 2020 et la contestation violente du verdict des urnes marquent un probable tournant pour la démocratie états-unienne. Les trois intervenants de cette journée d’étude, spécialistes de l’intersection entre politique, religion et droits des femmes et des personnes LGBT+, tireront des leçons de cette mobilisation inégalée.

Quelles filiations, différences ou complémentarités peut-on identifier entre les terrains d’aventure européens et nord-américains ? Quelle est la place des terrains d’aventure aujourd’hui dans les politiques d’aménagement des espaces éducatifs et ludiques aux États-Unis ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions que nous souhaitons explorer lors de ce workshop. Il s’agit d’identifier les champs disciplinaires et les domaines professionnels que les terrains d’aventure occupent aujourd’hui aux États-Unis. L’objectif est de développer une lecture transversale et comparative visant à actualiser le modèle des terrains d’aventure en Europe comme en Amérique du nord.

This issue of Politique américaine seeks to address these interactions and to analyze the politics of food in grassroots social movements. Beyond the legitimate issues linked with public health and public policies, food-based social movements often advocate alternative ways of living together and provide a new perspective on civil society that is built outside the mainstream. Food is sustenance, but it is also a locus of socialization, sociability and education (Flammang), where issues of gender (Counihan), race (Witt, Opie) and class (Finn), are played out.

Ce colloque se propose d’aborder la figure de Georgette Leblanc au travers de l’un ou l’autre des métiers qu’elle a endossés dans le contexte de champs artistiques et intellectuels divers, ou bien encore comme figure moderniste, figure intermédiale ou figure d’une histoire du genre. Figure bourgeoise de la première vague féministe, chanteuse lyrique aux répertoires contrastés, metteuse en scène peu reconnue comme telle, promotrice et médiatrice déterminante d’une œuvre littéraire, Georgette Leblanc fut aussi une collaboratrice intellectuelle pour Maurice Maeterlinck et l’écrivaine principale de plusieurs ouvrages et articles de nature principalement autobiographique ou documentaire.

Ce séminaire doctoral entend s’engager dans une étude historique des ateliers d’artistes de 1880 à 2020. Pratiquant une sociologie des organisations qui postule que l’atelier du créateur compose une structure en soi, fonctionnelle car réglementée par des codes énoncés ou symboliques, catégorielle puisque régie par des habitus régulant les valeurs d’échanges, agissant au singulier ou selon un système collectif quand y pénètrent, outre le « maître » : les apprentis, les disciples, la/les muses, les modèles, les amis, les commanditaires, les collectionneurs etc., on avance que l’atelier fait office d’institution culturelle première.

Borders in the Americas – Integration, Security and Migrations

In the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, many analysts and experts argued that the world had reached the “end of history” [Fukuyama, 1992] and that regional and local organizations and free trade agreements (among which the European Union appeared to be a model of integration) signaled the emergence of a world without borders. Yet, thirty years later, the reality seems to be altogether different. Today, it is clear that “borders are back”. Whether these borders are challenged, violated, transcended, consolidated, or integrated, they remain necessarily at the heart of the political debate. This symposium will focus on a specific geographic area: the Americas.

Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land

"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

Twenty Years Later: Looking Back at 9/11

Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, the Universities of Toulouse (CAS) and Montpellier (EMMA) in the South of France are joining forces to organize an international interdisciplinary conference on these events. Its aim is to analyze, not only the events and their short-term consequences with a two-decade hindsight, but also the many ways in which those events have been perceived, represented, commented upon, co-opted or rewritten along the years. It also invites reflections upon the way in which some of these responses, representations or co-optations have been in their turn received, commented upon and used in this 20-year period.
