Reading and analysing Ottoman manuscript sources
During the four-day programme we will introduce young researchers (mostly MA and PhD candidates, but postdocs may also apply) to reading, combining and analysing manuscript sources from various archives of the Ottoman era, produced at local, provincial and imperial levels. We concentrate mainly on materials from the 16th and 20th centuries, but welcome also explorations into earlier archives.

South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters
The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

Là encore 1914 marque la grande coupure. Cet Orient n’existe plus. » (Albert Thibaudet) La journée se propose d’interroger dans quelle mesure la Grande Guerre modifie la perception et l’écriture de l’Orient chez Barrès. Pour éclairer la genèse d’Une enquête aux pays du Levant, récit né du voyage de 1914 et publié en 1923, on confrontera l’exemple de Barrès aux cas d’écrivains et de savants orientalistes, que ces derniers soient les contemporains ou les informateurs du voyageur.

La première journée d’études, consacrée à la période de l'après-seconde guerre mondiale ainsi qu’aux espaces ou territoires postcoloniaux, s'est déroulée le 14 novembre 2016. Cette seconde journée, « Les revues dans le monde : entre-deux-guerres », traite de l'avènement au sein des territoires non-occidentaux d'une internationale critique, caractérisée par une mise en tension entre désir d'émancipation, lutte contre l'impérialisme et spécificité culturelle.

Memories of 20th century massacres
Il s’agit de poser la question des différentes postures / situations mémorielles des sociétés, de leurs protagonistes (bourreaux, victimes, témoins), des enjeux et des usages sociaux et politiques posés par les différentes attitudes possibles notamment chez les anciens belligérants – déni, négation, oubli, aveu, pardon, concurrence mémorielle…le présent colloque entend s’attacher au seul aspect de la mémoire des massacres et non aux massacres eux-mêmes, en privilégiant la perception qu’en ont eu et/ou qu’en ont encore les sociétés, à travers leurs instances officielles sans négliger le point de vue « d’en bas » et les manifestations populaires qui y sont liées. Le colloque aura lieu les 22, 23 et 24 novembre 2017.

Theme issue of the journal Études arméniennes contemporaines (EAC n° 8 – Decembre 2017)
The history of the large-scale massacres committed against the Armenians under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, in 1894-1896, is still largely unknown, its sources underutilized or not studied at all. This period of extreme violence, a watershed in the political and social history of the Ottoman Empire, raises many questions about the similarities and differences with the genocidal process of 1915-1916. We invite submissions on a broad range of topics and disciplinary approaches for this special issue. Relevant studies may include chronological analyses of the events of the 1890s themselves, as well as analyses of the consequences of that era of violence up to the present day. At the heart of this issue lies the question of the precedent: what links can be established between the genocide and the mass crimes that preceded it – an issue relevant to the study of other twentieth-century genocides.

Actors and Vehicles of Architectural Criticism
Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a Cartography
This second international workshop takes into consideration the actors and the vehicles of criticism: with these terms it refers to both the agents of criticism (critics, architects, historians, publishers, photographers, institutions, etc.) and the media through which criticism is disseminated (press, photography, exhibitions, etc.). The workshop aims to expand the knowledge about the specific functions of these actors and their networks and to outline their mutual relationships. The four sessions investigate the links between the actors, the media of criticism, and the historical contexts within which they materialize, as well as the cultural, intellectual, and institutional milieus from which they originate.

French Citizenship and Colonization in the 20th century (until 1946)
Les dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française sont à la fois bien et mal connues. Des travaux récents ont rappelé que la césure entre citoyens et sujets s’est construite de façon progressive et par ajustements entre les enjeux de pouvoir à l’échelle locale et impériale, les logiques juridiques et les revendications portées par des acteurs mus par des intérêts différents, sinon contradictoires. La multiplication des recherches d’histoire sociale, politique et culturelle de la colonisation permet désormais d’écrire une histoire plurivoque des dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française en se demandant comment tous ces acteurs formulent la question qui sert de titre au colloque « quels citoyens pour l’empire ? » et quelles réponses ils lui apportent, ou comment ils font en sorte d’empêcher qu’elle soit débattue.
