  Éco-récits et imaginaires environnementaux

  Lublin Studies in Modern Languages and Literature

  Depuis la fin du XX^e siècle, les questions environnementales occupent une place de plus en plus centrale dans la littérature contemporaine. Si elle s’est toujours intéressée à la nature, la conscience écologique des menaces qui pèsent sur l’environnement constitue un phénomène relativement récent. Le dossier thématique « Éco-récits et imaginaires environnementaux » sera consacré à l’étude des fictions contemporaines qui interrogent la crise écologique et ses représentations littéraires. Il vise à analyser les dimensions esthétiques, éthiques et idéologiques des textes mettant en scène les relations entre les humains et le monde vivant, tout en explorant le rôle de la littérature dans la construction d’une conscience écologique.

  La cartographie d’Asie de l’Est à la BNF : Les cartes chinoises : collections et recherches récentes

  Le programme CartAsia, lancé en 2024 dans le cadre du plan quadriennal de la recherche de la BnF, étudie un important corpus cartographique en provenance d’Asie de l’Est conservé dans les collections de la Bibliothèque. Mené par le département des Cartes et plans, avec l’appui de nombreux partenaires scientifiques et institutionnels en France et dans le monde, il a pour objectif de faire connaître et donner accès à cet ensemble dispersé et jusqu’ici difficile à identifier.

  Materiality and Confinements in the Medieval and Early Modern Eras : Objects, Actors, and Experiences

  This international conference examines the history of confinements through the lens of their materiality. Indeed, confinement is defined by walls that separate individuals from society. Beyond the mere walls, daily interactions between confined individuals, institutional authorities, and staff are largely paved and defined by a variety of things : food, water, books, graffiti, clothes, money, letters, official registers, medicine, punishment objects, etc. In this regard, and drawing on the material turn in history since the early 2000s, things – whether “tangible” things physically available to historians or “textual” things described in written sources – might offer an additional perspective on the history of confinements more broadly, especially when addressing forms of “prison before the prison”.

  Anarchist Spaces: Practices, Ideas, and Networks (c. 1870–Present)

  This conference proposes to examine the spaces that self-avowed anarchists, as well as those who borrow from anarchism but do not identify with the ideology, have invested, produced and contested since the second half of the 19th century. The concept of “space” should be understood capaciously. It can be material and immaterial, ideological or symbolic, permanent or temporary, integrated or liminal, open or closed, real or imagined. Likewise, “anarchism” is to be understood broadly. For the purposes of this conference, anarchist spaces are not only those linked to a self-identified anarchist movement (in all its multiplicities). They also include spaces that may rather be seen (or see themselves) as autonomous, self-managed or anti-authoritarian, but which embody anarchism more or less implicitly through their day-to-day, activist, and revolutionary practices.

  Thinking from the Dual – Ontology, Theology and the Humanities through the Lens of the “Muthannā”

  This international conference explores the philosophical and theological implications of the Arabic grammatical dual (al-muthannā). Situated between the paradigms of unity and multiplicity that have long structured philosophical thought, the dual offers a distinctive relational structure in which two terms are held together without fusion or hierarchy. Taking this linguistic form as a conceptual starting point, the conference investigates the possibility of thinking relation itself as originary. Particular attention will be given to the concept of ʿahd (covenant, pact, commitment) as a relational event in Islamic theology and beyond. Bringing together philosophers, theologians, and scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the conference seeks to open a field of inquiry devoted to the ontological, theological, and anthropological significance of the dual in contemporary thought.

  Translating Comics: Between Bubbles, Cultures, and Constraints in East Asia

  The conference examines the challenges of comic translation at the intersection of literature, visual semiotics, and culture. It addresses difficulties posed by spatial text layout, as well as translating humor, puns, cultural references, and typographic effects. Editorial norms and censorship across different cultural contexts are also considered. The focus is on translations to or from Asian languages, particularly Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (manhua, manga, manhwa). Issues of adaptation, localization, and graphic constraints, along with the roles of editors and translators, will be discussed. Case studies of published or ongoing translations will illustrate these challenges.

  Field practices and epistemological issues, Palestine and Jordan

  The workshop aims to combine reflections on the ongoing development of Palestinian studies with the recent revival of work on Jordan, in order to examine Jordan's role as a privileged observation point for Palestine, a question that has been relatively unexplored until now. Through three main axes — archives and primary sources preserved in Jordan that enable the study of Palestine, the cross-border circulation of people and knowledge, and intersecting cultural scenes through the notions of identity and authenticity, this workshop aims to lay the groundwork for a transnational and multidisciplinary reflection on Jordan's place in the production of knowledge on Palestine.

  Reflecting on the richness of poor cinemas around the world in the 21st century

  This symposium aims to put into global perspective the aesthetic and economic issues as well as the analysis of the creative and distribution processes that were at the heart of the study days devoted to low-budget cinema in France, which took place in 2024. Without romanticising the lack of resources, how can we define the theoretical, practical, political, economic and aesthetic contours of these ‘poor cinemas’ in a contemporary international context? What specific filmmaking processes ensure its existence? What original film forms emerge from it? What parallel distribution channels do these films require to be created and defended?
