Les mondes arabes au prisme des émotions
The Arab Worlds Through the Lens of Emotions
This call for papers invites scholars from various disciplines and countries across the region to take stock of ongoing research, at a time when emotional currents are particularly in- tense. It seeks to explore how emotions unfold, circulate, and are regulated or instrumenta- lized, in an era where their digital expression plays a decisive role in shaping the understanding and representation of contemporary conflicts. The symposium aims to bring together researchers who analyze emotions from both theoretical and methodological perspectives, with particular attention to their relational dimension—taking into account the flows and confrontations between individuals, collectives, and institutions—as well as to their material, temporal, and spatial embeddedness.

Dans les mondes arabes et musulmans, la mémoire des conflits et des héritages historiques fait l’objet de luttes narratives où s’affrontent discours dominants et contre-discours. À travers les médias, les archives, les arts et les espaces de transmission, les récits du passé sont sans cesse reconstruits, contestés et réappropriés. Cette journée d’étude propose d’explorer ces dynamiques à travers quatre axes de réflexion croisant représentations médiatiques, pratiques culturelles, structures de pouvoir et résistances minoritaires.

La Syrie après Assad : Histoire, patrimoine et transition politique
L’histoire et le patrimoine ont toujours été des terrains d’affrontement idéologique et politique. En Syrie, le régime baathiste a instrumentalisé l’histoire pour asseoir sa légitimité, effaçant la diversité des appartenances. La chute du régime soulève des questions sur l’usage politique de l’histoire et le rôle des historiens dans cette transition. Cette journée d’étude explore comment l’histoire et le patrimoine peuvent accompagner la reconstruction de la société syrienne.

Music in the Middle East after the digital revolution
Journal “Regards”
This issue of the journal Regards (Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth) proposes to investigate the dynamics of musical production and forms of dissemination in the contemporary Near East, particularly through the do it yourself practices that have emerged with the advent of home studios and low-cost listening platforms. The challenge of such a study is thus to confront the different aesthetics of today's music, blending diverse intellectual and cultural heritages, mobilizing the affects of nostalgia and those linked to the historical realities shared by the region's inhabitants. The question of understanding the articulation of musical dynamics with social, political and state boundaries and different contexts of conflict will be explored.

La langue arabe en France au prisme du politique
Constructions, circulations et mutations des imaginaires hier, aujourd’hui et demain
La langue arabe en France nourrit toutes sortes d’imaginaires et de représentations savantes ou populaires suscitant à la fois fantasmes, peurs et fascinations alimentés par l’histoire et la mémoire, renforcés par les enjeux de politiques nationales et/ou internationales. Ces imaginaires bien identifiés se manifestent dans le récit personnel, le discours politique, les médias, les productions artistiques, littéraires et culturelles. Dans quelle mesure et comment ces imaginaires deviennent-ils un souci pour les locuteurs, un défi pour le politique ou un facteur de tension ? Ce colloque vise à mobiliser les outils et méthodes de recherche en langues et en sciences humaines et sociales en vue de comprendre ces imaginaires dans leur complexité, d’analyser les logiques de leur construction et les outils de leur expression en prenant en considération les facteurs historiques et les circonstances politiques de leur élaboration.

Le XXIe forum du Réseau transméditerranéen de recherche en communication (RTRC) entend questionner une nouvelle fois la dialectique entre l’espoir de communication transméditerranéenne et la réalité des incommunications, sans occulter l’épée de Damoclès que représentent aujourd’hui les risques réels de l’acommunication. Le RTRC interroge ces concepts au prisme d’un acteur montant et tendanciellement hégémonique de nos pratiques communicationnelles : les plateformes numériques. Les propositions sélectionnées feront l'objet d'une valorisation post-colloque dans la perspective de la publication d’un ouvrage collectif.

How can we look at Iranian cinema and the visual arts in relation to Iran today when the country has been experiencing an important episode of uprising and resistance, since September 16, 2022? Indeed, as in 1979, 1999, and 2009, and as in 2017 and 2018, it is obvious that images play a decisive role in the constitution of events. Iranian artists and filmmakers are indeed demonstrating an exceptional mobilization and effervescence in order to bear witness to the ongoing protests, but also to support them and mobilize international public opinion.

Music-Making and Musicians in Cinema of the MENA Region
Interactions between film and music in the MENA region are relatively understudied, partly because music often takes a subsidiary role in film analysis, while music specialists seldom turn their attention to film. Nevertheless, a growing body of work exists on music as a form of cultural resistance at times of political upheaval, such as during the Arab uprisings and protests in Iran when voices of past musical icons have reverberated with the revolutionary mood and musicians have become symbols against political oppression.

The ephemeral dimension of Theater is often considered as an obstacle for a pertinent account of past representations, hence the difficulty of writing the history of a practice when we cannot consider every moment of its creative process. We cannot also apprehend clearly its future. However, even if it does not pretend to predict the future, this call for papers wishes to question the long-term effects and the procedures that contribute to the perpetuation of Theatrical currents and productions in the Arab World.

Commitment in the face of disorder and tumult in contemporary Arab society
LiCArC journal - the journal of contemporary Arab literature and culture
Le numéro 10 de la revue LiCarC, revue de littérature et de culture arabes contemporaines, publiera des contributions sur l’engagement face aux désordres et tumultes dans la société arabe contemporaine. Du dernier quart du XXe siècle à aujourd’hui, les sociétés arabes n’ont de cesse de provoquer des crises puis de lutter pour les surmonter, se réformer, s’adapter et se réinventer, tantôt en s’inspirant des traditions les mieux ancrées, tantôt en empruntant des éléments exogènes, tantôt enfin en créant et innovant, par déformation, dénaturation, travestissement, caricature, ou parodie. L’inventivité et la créativité dont font preuve romanciers, poètes, artistes ou anonymes mobilisés pour défendre la liberté ou lutter contre toute forme de discrimination ou de dictature confèrent à l’engagement critique dans le monde arabe une réelle efficacité, souvent redoutée, parfois jusqu’à la censure

"Images and the imagination of the city" - the case of Beirut
Cette séance mettra l’accent sur le Liban, en scrutant le cas de la ville de Beyrouth. La stratification urbaine qu’a connue Beyrouth à travers son histoire complexe,et les mutations brutales qu’ont subi le paysage urbain, ainsi que les formes architecturales et le tissu social ont généré une multitude d’images de la ville qui se confrontent encore actuellement. Nous retrouvons, entre autres, une Beyrouth contée par des habitants témoins des âges prospères d'une ville vivante, active, ou une Beyrouth portant les stigmates d’une nouvelle cartographie imposée par les violences d’une guerre civile ou encore une Beyrouth aseptisée, promue par des bailleurs privés. Face à ces identités conflictuelles, et à une privatisation progressive, due à une politique d'état conciliante, les espaces de la ville ont davantage de mal à accueillir un débat politique(au sens large du terme) libre et accessible à tous.

Dans le cadre d’un travail de recherche cherchant à renouveler l’étude et l’historiographie des esthétiques et formes théâtrales dans les pays du Maghreb, du Moyen-Orient et du Proche-Orient, cette journée d’étude vise tout particulièrement à étudier la place de la tragédie grecque dans les formes scéniques des pays de la région. L'approche se voudra pluridisciplinaire, s'inscivant à la fois dans des perspectives esthétique, sociologique, linguistique et politique.

Writing, translating and staging the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict
Ce colloque international et interdisciplinaire aimerait s’intéresser à la pluralité des écritures produites autour de l’histoire du conflit israélo-palestinien et à la manière dont la littérature, les arts vivants, le cinéma ont apporté une mise en récit complémentaire et parallèle à celle des recherches en sciences sociales. Sur un terrain hautement conflictuel où chaque parole, chaque mot sont analysés et soupesés, l’écriture littéraire et poétique, le théâtre mais également les productions audio-visuelles sont autant de ressources et d’outils que des acteurs ont mobilisé pour dire, donner à connaître les histoires personnelles et collectives de cet affrontement.

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas
Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom
Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content and narrative forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This conference aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

It is published twice a year and is trilingual (French, English and Arabic). It comprises a call for papers section, a Varia section and a reviews section. For its second issue, Regards launches a call for papers for its thematic dossier as well as for its Varia section.

Call for papers - Epistemology and methodology
Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age
The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

Art, dance, performance and politics - between Europe and Asia
Ce premier colloque international consacré à Valentine de Saint-Point vise à explorer l'ensemble des chemins empruntés par cette femme complexe, au parcours biographique enchevêtré, à l'œuvre foisonnante. Car si Valentine de Saint-Point a gagné, désormais, une certaine reconnaissance critique, les réalisations de cette expérimentatrice hors du commun restent encore peu étudiées dans le détail, et paraissent presque éclipsées par son personnage : la poétesse semble avoir été victime de son existence trop encombrante, de sa trajectoire trop romanesque, de ses turpitudes trop omniprésentes. Comme si le pittoresque de sa vie amenait à oublier ses créations ou ses textes, ou à ne les considérer que de loin, comme des documents secondaires d'une aventure personnelle construite hors des sentiers battus.
