Attractiveness and mobility networks: seducing, welcoming and integrating
As part of the study day "Attractiveness and Mobility Networks," PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars are invited to explore the dynamics of attractiveness in individual and collective mobilities, from the Bronze Age to the modern era. The event focuses on the legal, political, and social mechanisms implemented to attract, welcome, and integrate individuals into networks. It also examines the formal and informal circulation of information, as well as the processes of community clustering. Particular attention will be given to both the successes and failures of these mechanisms of attractiveness.

This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

La quatorzième journée d’étude en paléographie et diplomatique hébraïques s’adresse à tous les chercheurs travaillant sur les collections de la Genizah du Caire conservées dans les institutions françaises.

From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East
In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

Fenestella is a scholarly, multilingual, and peer-reviewed open access journal. Fenestella publishes scholarly papers on medieval art and architecture, between Late Antiquity and c. 1400, covering the Latin West, the Byzantine East and medieval Islam. We are now accepting proposals for the 2022 Thematic Issue: Configuring Monastic Architectural Settings: Early Medieval Experiments.

Ḥanbalism and Ašʿarism have been for more than a century represented as two inherently antagonistic theological schools. “Literalist”, “fideist” and “traditionalist”, Ḥanbalism is said to be the uncompromising opponent of rationalist currents. Contemporary Wahhabi-Salafism is perceived itself as a legitimate heir to this doctrine and a modern replica of this struggle. However, several academic studies are shaking up this reading grid and leading to a revision of our certainties by renewing our approaches. Through this international conference, we hope to give them more visibility, to question our representations of Ašʿarism, Ḥanbalism and the contemporary currents that claim to be the later in order to renew our understanding of theological quarrels.

The maqālāt treaties in 3rd-9th and 4th-10th centuries
Doxography as source and gender
Notre connaissance des premiers siècles du kalām repose presque exclusivement sur des doxographies dans lesquelles ont été consignées, classées et réarrangées les différentes thèses et doctrines des théologiens. Procédant par « unités de divergence », les traités de maqālāt sont un genre doxographique qui connut un essor dans le monde islamique aux IIIe, IXe et IVe, Xe siècles. Nous examinerons lors de cette journée d’études les principaux traités de maqālāt de cette époque, à la fois en tant que source des premières grandes ontologies du kalām et en tant que genre autonome qui remplit un certain nombre de fonctions normatives, théologiques et politiques, au sein de la communauté religieuse.

Two postdoc research grants
Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.

"Iǧtihād" and "taqlīd" in Sunni and Shiite Islam
L'histoire de la pensée musulmane montre que la relation entre le taqlīd et l’iǧtihād est complexe. Le dossier de ce MIDÉO se propose d’approfondir les deux logiques à la lumière du patrimoine islamique. Les contributions pourront souligner les discours théologiques de légitimité ou de réfutation, mais aussi leur articulation. Au-delà de la rivalité entre les deux logiques, il conviendra de vérifier si l’on reste bien dans un continuum, et de vérifier que si les perspectives hégémoniques sont rivales, elles ne sont pas incompatibles.

La famille dans le monde arabo-islamique médiéval suscite toujours l’intérêt des historiens médiévistes puisqu’elle représente encore un thème de recherche important et peu étudié au Moyen Âge, malgré les travaux bien connus déjà réalisés. Nous envisageons d’approfondir la recherche sur ce thème autour de trois axes : la parenté, le pouvoir et la marginalité. Dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire et comparative, notre appel à communication est adressé aussi aux chercheurs des autres spécialités et des autres périodes historiques.

One of the questions raised today by some Egyptian religious authorities is on the lawfulness and relevance of using intellectual tools foreign to the Islamic tradition to read and interpret the Qurʾān and texts of the classic Islamic heritage. Is it permissible and appropriate to use contemporary human sciences to study the texts of the Arab-Islamic patrimony or should it be limited to the Ḥadīṯ? IDEO would like to contribute to this debate by studying the emergence of the Ḥadīṯ as the authority of knowledge in the Islamic sciences between the 4ᵗʰ/10ᵗʰ and the 8ᵗʰ/14ᵗʰ century.

Elites lifestyles - luxury and ostentation from pre-Islamic Iran to Mogol India
Cette table ronde internationale sera l’occasion de réfléchir via les sources textuelles et/ou matérielles sur le phénomène du luxe de l’empire des steppes à l’époque des Ilkhans et des Timourides en intégrant les héritages du milieu mésopotamien et iranien et ce, depuis l’époque préislamique. Les réflexions porteront aussi sur les éléments de la culture nomade qui y sont incorporés, qu’ils soient associés à la personne du souverain, à l’aristocratie dans un ensemble de codes, d’artefacts ou de symboles, ou au contraire dispensés par le biais de la troisième fonction (distributions de biens, de denrées, de présents) à destination des populations concernées. Cette rencontre sera l’occasion de mesurer, en dehors des thèmes convenus, les composantes du luxe chez les Iraniens, les Turco-Mongols et leurs descendants, entre ostentation et objets de prestige personnel, et d’évaluer le poids de l’acculturation autour de ce concept.
