The Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (Idéo) in Cairo, in partnership with the University of Insubria (Varese and Como), is organizing a Summer School in July 2025 as part of the Anawati Chair “Combating Religious Extremism through Interfaith Dialogue.” This program is specifically designed for PhD students or recent doctoral graduates (since January 1, 2023) focusing on citizenship and religious pluralism.

De la page manuscrite aux bòti de carton : usages prophylactiques et propitiatoires du papier
Italie et par-delà, Moyen Âge – Époque moderne
À la faveur de l’histoire culturelle des matériaux initiée depuis le material turn, des auteurs démontrent depuis peu la resémantisation spécifique au papier à la Renaissance : prenant progressivement la relève du parchemin en tant que support consacré des sacræ paginæ de l’histoire sainte, le papier est alors perçu comme « substance de la grâce divine », y compris lorsqu’il est utilisé pour les ex-votos et effigies votives (Chessa, 2019). Nous proposons donc d’étudier conjointement les étapes matérielles de transformation du papier et les vertus métamorphiques, effectives et imaginaires, dont cette matière malléable était investie. Des questions connexes à notre sujet ne manqueront pas d’être ponctuellement soulevées, telles : la définition des critères d’usages du papier en regard de ceux du parchemin ; la question des occurrences de la préservation d’opérations manuscrites face à la généralisation progressive de l’imprimerie et de l’image gravée.

Women and religions in the Mediterranean
Les femmes des deux rives de la Méditerranée vivent et interagissent dans un espace social, culturel et religieux particulier. Celui-ci, axé sur la Méditerranée, est marqué depuis des siècles par la concurrence de plusieurs traditions religieuses qui partagent néanmoins une même culture fondatrice apparue dans un contexte antique, médiéval et moderne, de nature résolument patriarcale. L'équipe de recherche a souhaité revenir sur les formes prises par ce patriarcat à travers les âges et sur les mutations sociales qui le font évoluer depuis quelques années.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement
The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.

Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

The spectacle of religion - individual commitment and community constructions
Les historiens de l’Antiquité ont admis le caractère profondément pluriel des pratiques religieuses qui sont articulées, en particulier, au politique, au culturel ou encore aux modèles éducatifs. Or le lien entre religion et spectacle, souvent évoqué dans les études sur les religions anciennes, n’a suscité à ce jour que peu d’études approfondies. Il s’agira pour le colloque de s’interroger sur les modalités de participation des acteurs du rituel en prenant en compte ce que nous pourrions appeler le caractère « spectaculaire » des célébrations religieuses.

A journey between the categories of the pure and impure in the imagination of the ancient world
Le colloque international « Hagnos, Miasma, Katharsis. Voyage entre les catégories du pur et de l’impur dans l’imaginaire du monde ancien » (Cagliari, 4-6 mai 2016) propose une mise au point sur les études consacrées aux phénomènes du pur et de l’impur et à leur exégèse antique. La réflexion autour de ce thème privilégiera une approche interdisciplinaire, tenant compte des perspectives iconographique, littéraire, anthropologique et historico-religieuse, afin d’encourager une confrontation et un dialogue élargis entre les spécialistes de cette question cruciale pour comprendre les mentalités antiques.

Dans le monde ancien, l’exigence d’accomplir des actes de purification, liés au besoin d’expier une faute ou d’accompagner un changement de statut, est perçue comme capitale dans beaucoup de circonstances. Les mots miasma et catharsis utilisés pour désigner respectivement la souillure et la purification, englobent de fait une dimension beaucoup plus articulée, qui se situe entre les sphères de compétence du pur et de l’impur. Les occasions qui prescrivaient le recours à des rites de purification étaient en rapport avec des phases liminaires de la vie, telle la naissance, la mort, mais aussi le mariage, ou encore avec les festivités religieuses. La mort était par exemple considérée l’une des principales sources de souillure. Le miasma qui l’accompagnait pouvait contaminer les dieux et les hommes, les vivants et les morts. Tous devaient alors indifféremment se soumettre aux rituels de purification. Les divinités elles-mêmes n’hésitaient pas à prendre les distances des individus contaminés, comme Artémis, lorsqu’elle abandonne son favori, Hippolyte, à son destin.
