The Marc de Montalembert Foundation and the École du Louvre have formed a partnership to sponsor the Marc de Montalembert Prize, worth 9,000 euros. The prize will be awarded to support a research project whose anticipated results will constitute an original contribution to the knowledge of the arts of the Mediterranean world from Antiquity to our day. The Foundation will also offer the prize holder the possibility of a residency at its headquarters in Rhodes, Greece.

Courtyards and patios in the Mediterranean
The courtyard or patio house, based on the intimate appropriation of a fragment of sky at the heart of the domestic space, is a major archetype of human habitation. Deeply rooted in Mediterranean traditions, it surprises with its longevity and its ability to generate unique expressions, shaped by the diversity of physical and cultural contexts. This archetype, which has spanned the centuries, from the ancient world to contemporary projects, continues to inspire architects, thinkers, and creators, and has regained particular relevance in light of the challenges of the 21st century, as contemporary issues invite us to rethink modes of dwelling. To explore these dimensions, the conference adopts a multidisciplinary approach structured around four cross-cutting themes. It is aimed at a diverse range of profiles—architects, historians, anthropologists, sociologists, archaeologists, artists, writers, climatologists, etc.—drawing on scientific contributions, feedback from architects, and artistic expressions.

Les sociétés anciennes, loin d’être isolées ou déconnectées, étaient liées, à tous points de vue, les unes aux autres dans « un tout petit monde » qu’est celui de la Méditerranée. Elles étaient parcourues par des échanges de nature diverse (économique, politique, social et religieux ou symbolique). Cette journée sera consacrée aux échanges et aux contacts culturels dans le domaine du sacré et des pratiques rituelles et cultuelles collectives ou privées, communautaires ou domestiques. Notre voyage diachronique sur une aire géographique étendue, nous mènera des rives de l’Égypte et de la Phénicie jusqu’en Méditerranée Occidentale, couvrant alors toute l’Antiquité.

We invite archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, media and communication scholars, heritage curators, and witnesses to discuss these pioneering figures, focusing on their excavation methods, conservation techniques, and efforts to share knowledge about their archaeological finds.

Spatialité et diachronie de la gestion de l’eau en Méditerranée
The conference organised on 28 and 29 November 2024 as part of Marina Covolan's CIVIS3i SeBNA - Water distribution systems in the ancient world: forms of continuity, permanence and subsistence in contemporary society, focuses on the supply, storage and disposal of water over the centuries. The aim is to compare technologies, structures and knowledge that are distant in time and space, but which seem to recur and have many points in common. Around a dozen French and European colleagues from Scotland, Spain, Italy and Sweden will be taking part, covering a wide range of subjects and fields. There will also be a poster session, mainly by young researchers working on current projects or PhD.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique
Plus de vingt ans après la parution décisive des Monumenta linguae Messapicae (2002), après les résultats considérables obtenus par les fouilles des dernières décennies, et après la synthèse récente de Joachim Matzinger (2019) sur la langue messapienne qui a permis de relancer sur des bases solides la discussion des inscriptions en langue locale, le colloque international « Messapie et messapien : pour un nouveau bilan archéologique, épigraphique et linguistique » a pour objectif de faire dialoguer les épigraphistes et les linguistes spécialistes des textes en langue messapienne et les archéologues spécialistes de la culture matérielle en Messapie.

Black Sea archaeology has always captivated the interest of scholars, because of its unique topography and diachronically multi-ethnic historical landscape.The previous decade was a particularly challenging period for archaeological research worldwide due to the new realities imposed by the pandemic, the extraordinary political and socio-economic factors, and the long-lasting crisis in the Humanities and Arts. In spite of all this, excavations, systematic surveys, remote sensing and geophysical prospections, were undertaken in numerous coastal and inland sites along the Euxine, while equally productive were research projects on specific monuments or aspects of the material culture. Aiming to bring forth the latest advances accomplished in the field, the Department of Black Sea Studies at the Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, are organizing an International Conference on The Archaeological Work in the Greek Settlements of the BlackSea and their Environs during the Last Decade.

150 ans de recherches dans l’île d’Apollon
Le colloque Délos 1873-2023 célèbre le cent-cinquantenaire du début des fouilles archéologiques sur cette île des Cyclades, lieu de naissance d'Apollon et d'Artémis. Trois axes ont été définis pour orienter les travaux du colloque. Le premier traitera de la sociologie délienne et de l'histoire scientifique et institutionnelle de ses chercheurs ; le second analysera l’évolution des modèles théoriques, des méthodes et des outils mis en oeuvre dans les recherches jusqu’à aujourd’hui ; le troisième s’intéressera à l’histoire de Délos après son abandon, de sa fréquentation à sa spoliation, de sa réception à l’utilisation de son image et de son nom dans les arts visuels.

A ce titre, elle est un centre de recherche en sciences humaines et sociales sur le monde hellénique et balkanique. L’École française d’Athènes accueille des membres scientifiques nommés par le directeur de l’École pour une année renouvelable trois fois maximum, sur proposition du conseil scientifique de l’École après avis d’une commission d’admission.

The Levant and the Mediterranean

At the crossroads of the Near East and the eastern Mediterranean, the Levant has always been a multicultural area, a zone of contact between Asia, Africa and Europe. Since the 19th century, archaeological digs have been revealing the archaeology and history of this region. This issue of Technè reflects the changes and challenges facing archaeology in this region, and highlights the contribution of a multidisciplinary approach to the knowledge and preservation of the Levant's heritage, from the Neolithic period to the end of the Middle Ages.

La connaissance des villes de l’Antiquité tardive a longtemps souffert d’une double difficulté. D’une part, leur histoire fut longtemps mal comprise. Grâce aux renouvellements historiographiques des dernières décennies, on sait aujourd’hui que ce n’est plus le déclin mais la transformation voire la continuité qui caractérisent l’histoire de la ville tardive. D’autre part, les vestiges de ces villes, souvent constitués de spolia et jugés moins significatifs et moins esthétiques, que ceux de la ville du Haut Empire, ont été négligés voire simplemente démontés et dégagés sans enregistrement. Le renouveau des études sur l’Antiquité tardive a permis aujourd’hui d’attirer également l’attention sur cette ville tardive et la nécessaire valorisation de ses vestiges.

Questions de définition
Cette journée consacrée aux résidences princières ou nobiliaires situées en milieu urbain ou extra urbain sera l’occasion de questionner, sur un arc chronologique et géographique très ample, ces lieux qui regroupaient de nombreuses fonctions structurantes dans les sociétés anciennes. Lieux de pouvoir, de savoir, de sociabilité, ils étaient également des lieux de travail et organisaient des espaces économiques sur des distances plus ou moins vastes. Ce domaine de recherche a fait l’objet, ces dernières années, d’un renouvellement documentaire et épistémologique que cette journée souhaite mettre en valeur, à travers notamment les recherches portées par les jeunes chercheurs.
