Domesticating Irish nature : past and contemporary approaches and practices

This international colloquium held in Grenoble, combining workshops, roundtables in addition to thematic panels, therefore also invites contributions that explore the representations at stake when the environmental history and prospective future of Ireland are involved. This exploration may be achieved through the intersecting lenses of ecocide, resource exploitation, and ecological resistance or use of nature as a place allowing for an escape from the usual modern globalized ultraliberal capitalistic rat race. We seek interdisciplinary interventions—historical, literary, legal, political, ecological, artistic—that investigate how nature in Ireland has been used, abused, and reclaimed in the face of economic pressures and environmental degradation.

Abondance et manque se posent comme des états opposés et sont pourtant tous deux contraires de l’équilibre, de l’harmonie, du neutre. La recherche ou la fuite d’une de ces deux extrémités met en jeu notre rapport aux ressources, au besoin et au désir, et nous invite à réfléchir à la question de la valeur, de la norme, et de l’excès. D’abord une question de survie fondamentale, notre rapport à l’abondance et au manque peut s’observer dans l'organisation de nos sociétés, de la langue, mais aussi dans nos recherches d’une esthétique et d’une expression. Ce colloque proposera une réflexion interdisciplinaire sur ces deux notions dans le monde anglophone.

Whether one thinks of environment as context, setting, climate change, green spaces or sounds, today’s epistemology invites us to rethink man’s relation to the external world to the extent that the “inside” and “outside” coalesce, nature and culture merge, man and animal are reconfigured. How have British artists responded to these shifting perceptions of the world around them, of this great swirling circle of life and non life in which they found – or imagined – themselves diversely positioned, for a long time at the centre, then in a more undefined place – at the margin even? How has art itself positioned itself in this newly defined environment?

Les cultures des littoraux

Cadres et modes de vie dans l’espace maritime Manche-Mer du Nord du IIIe au Xe siècle

Les cultures des espaces maritimes et littoraux sont le thème de la table ronde de clôture des trois premières années d’activité d'un projet collectif de recherche. Son éclairage thématique transversal permettra de réexaminer la problématique des occupations côtières sur les quatre plans de la fréquentation, de l’exploitation, de la maîtrise et de l’aménagement des espaces littoraux, intégrant la question des échanges et des relations qu’ils conditionnent, sur le plan strictement humain, des idées, de l’économie et des techniques notamment. Nous souhaitons placer les apports des recherches récentes en Nord-Pas-de-Calais dans une perspective qui s’émancipe de sphères géographiques étroitement contingentées ou de périodes trop précisément définies, en considérant la bande côtière Manche-Mer du nord de la Normandie au delta rhéno-mosan, de la fin du IIIe siècle à la fin du Xe siècle.

Landscapes

Le terme « paysage » fait l’objet de nombreux débats conceptuels. En effet, la perception du temps et de l’espace varie précisément selon les époques et les lieux, chacun se représentant et inventant un paysage nouveau (Westphal, La Géocritique, 2007). L’enjeu est de dépasser le clivage entre acteur et spectateur du paysage, pays et paysan, paysage et environnement et d’éviter d’abstraire le lien entre les paysages et leur territoire. Les paysages concernent autant le spectateur et son point de vue subjectif et parfois esthétique, que l’expérience concrète du promeneur.

Ce séminaire interdisciplinaire (histoire et géographie) étudiera les questions de sentiments à l’égard de la nature, de « conservation » des espaces naturels et/ou sauvages, à l’aide de deux spécialistes de la protection de l'environnement aux XIXe et XXe siècle, en Angleterre et au Canada.
