Dans le cadre du cycle sur les élites combattantes au Moyen Âge, chaque intervenant propose un dossier documentaire inédit ou peu connu dont il réalise un commentaire et une analyse scientifique. La matinée d’études vise autant à éclairer la figure de grands officiers royaux au cœur du conflit de souveraineté qu’est la guerre de Cent ans qu’à montrer l’historienne ou l’historien à l’œuvre face à ses sources (méthodologie employée, biais documentaires, construction de l’objet de recherche…).

Imagining a Future (inside/outside) Britain
S’inscrivant dans la perspective du champ interdisciplinaire des études sur le futur, et plus spécifiquement des études critiques sur le futur, ce colloque propose d’étudier la façon dont le futur du Royaume-Uni et des nations qui le composent a été imaginé à travers les périodes, sur des modes fictionnels et non-fictionnels. Nous nous intéresserons à la fois aux représentations du futur du Royaume-Uni dans son ensemble (le futur de l’État, de la société et de l’Union britanniques), et aux représentations du futur des différents territoires constitutifs du Royaume-Uni soit au sein de l’Union et de l’Empire, soit au contraire hors de ceux-ci.

Things Unsaid, Things Unwritten during the English Restoration (1660-1714)
Aussi conventionnelle qu’oxymorique, l'expression de « non-dit » remet en question la binarité supposée entre parole et silence. L’expression thématise à la fois une absence, un manque (de mots), et porte néanmoins en elle la trace manifeste d’une présence. Du moins pour qui sait la déchiffrer. Car le silence du non-dit est, en réalité, une invitation : à comprendre, à deviner, à faire accoucher un sens qui ne veut, ou ne peut pas se dire. Le non-dit porte en lui la trace d’un effacement, mais aussi d'une résistance obstinée. Le non-dit est un silence qui dit quelque chose. Comment repérer les signes d'un silence qui n'en est pas un ? Comment reconstruire avec certitude un discours absent ? Ce projet prolonge la réflexion lancée à l'occasion du colloque « Consentir, refuser, céder : Spectres de la conquête à la Restauration (1660-1714) ». Il a pour vocation de constituer un groupe informel d'étude interdisciplinaire sur la Restauration.

The Invention of Traditions in the United Kingdom and the British Empire, 1840-1940
The year 2023 will mark the fortieth anniversary of the publication of The Invention of Tradition, a collective work edited by Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger. Since this publication, the invention of tradition has become a key concept in cultural studies. While the book edited by Hobsbawm and Ranger brings together contributions on the invention of the Scottish kilt tradition, Welsh national culture, scouting, and British monarchical ceremonies, which cover the period from 1840 to 1914, this conference invites us to explore other invented traditions over a longer period, from the 1840s to the 1940s. It will also analyze the reactivation of certain traditions at key moments in history.

Imagined Identities and Communities in the Late Middle Ages
On December 9 and 10 of this year, the “Cultures i Societats de l'Edat Mitjana” (CiSEM) research group, led by Dr. Antoni Furió, professor of medieval history at the University of Valencia, will hold a conference with the title: Imagined Identities and Imagined Communities in the Late Middle Ages. Far from being strictly contemporary creations, nations, the most elaborated product of imagined communities, had their relevance throughout the medieval centuries. The most recent historiography has tried to establish the mechanisms that contributed to building this type of imaginary in which, according to some anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists, collective identities are taking an increasingly prominent role in international geopolitics. For this reason, this process is presented as a great opportunity to discuss the most recent historiographical contributions, and to try to shed more light on a transcendental historical phenomenon on the evolution of human societies.

Approches historiques et perspectives actuelles
Ce colloque international et transdisciplinaire est sponsorisé par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du projet DIGITENS H2020 (H2020-MSCA-RISE 2018) et a pour objectif de s’interroger sur l’évolution des espaces de sociabilité du long dix-huitième siècle et sur leur persistance à travers les époques. L’analyse de l’interaction entre la sociabilité et l’espace ainsi que des modes de construction des espaces de sociabilité de l’époque moderne à l’époque contemporaine/actuelle permettra une relecture de l’histoire des sociétés européennes et impériales. Cette approche fournira un prisme original et diachronique, permettant une meilleure compréhension de leur héritage, dans la mesure où la sociabilité a contribué à donner un cadre aux interactions sociales des temps modernes et à redéfinir l’organisation spatiale des siècles à venir.

Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...
15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Race and Class in Britain and America, 17th-19th centuries
This conference will question how developing discourses of race came to structure the societies of Britain and America in the early modern period. It hopes to explore the way discourses of race and class interacted with each other, and how the vocabulary of social strata overlapped with the language of race. How were the bodies and minds of the upper ranks considered to differ from those of other people during these periods? How important indeed was the idea of the physical body in rank distinction, and how did this square with the notions of pure blood that underpinned both “race” and hereditary privilege? In what ways were some groups “naturally” privileged or “naturally” excluded? Were social minorities like indigents or women marginalized or stigmatized similarly to Africans or Native Americans?

France and New Zealand during the Great War: the Centenary Conference 1918-2018
Le 4 novembre 1918, les troupes néo-zélandaises libérèrent la ville fortifiée du Quesnoy après une bataille décisive qui fut leur dernière offensive de la Grande Guerre. Des liens d’amitié se formèrent par la suite entre les soldats et les civils libérés et, jusqu’à ce jour, de nombreux Néo-Zélandais visitent le Quesnoy, la seule ville française à être jumelée avec une ville en Nouvelle-Zélande, la ville de Cambridge dans la région du Waipa.

Following a symposium held at Rennes 2 University last may, further contributions (in English or French) are now sought in order to publish a wide-ranging, peer-reviewed collection of articles appraising OK Computer’s musical, cultural and political legacy twenty years after its release. The aim of this publication is to bring together contributions from scholars who wish to confront Radiohead’s work with their own disciplinary methodologies, including (but not limited to) musicology, sociology, art history, political science, literature, cultural studies or even economics.

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

"Unsocial sociability" and socio-cultural tensions in Enlightenment Britain
Dans le cadre du projet international HIDISOC (History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832)), ce colloque interdisciplinaire a pour objectif de comprendre les mécanismes qui mettent à l’épreuve la sociabilité et de chercher les manifestations de « l’insociable sociabilité » des hommes (Kant). Il s’agira d’identifier les tensions culturelles et sociales et les formes de résistance qui définissent la sociabilité britannique au cours du long XVIIIe siècle.

Dans le cadre du projet interdisciplinaire HIDISOC « History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832) », la journée d’étude du 13 mars 2015, organisée par PLEIADE (université Paris 13) et HCTI (UBO Brest) vise à appréhender, dans une perspective comparatiste, l'évolution de la sociabilité britannique au cours du long dix-huitième siècle, sous l'angle des dynamiques et conflits entre pratiques et modèles nationaux de sociabilité.
