En juillet 2024, nous apprenions le décès de l’anthropologue et politiste états-unien James C. Scott, dont les travaux figurent désormais parmi les classiques des sciences sociales. Son œuvre se distingue par l’ampleur de ses enquêtes tout comme par la richesse de ses concepts et leur dimension heuristique. Elle participe à jeter un regard nouveau sur des questions classiques des sciences sociales et de l’anarchisme comme celles de la définition de l’État, du politique, ou encore des modes de domination et de résistance à l’autorité.

Revue « Parcours anthropologiques »
Les villes arabes, souvent considérées comme traditionnelles ou marginales, ont été redécouvertes par les sciences sociales depuis les années 1970. Ces recherches montrent que ces villes ne sont pas simplement des exemples d'urbanité dégradée, mais des espaces dynamiques qui remettent en question les modèles occidentaux d'urbanisation. Elles révèlent également des pratiques informelles et des formes de résistance qui redéfinissent les relations entre citoyens et pouvoirs. En quoi ces observations pourraient-elles influencer notre compréhension des dynamiques urbaines contemporaines ? Quelles nouvelles perspectives pourraient émerger de cette relecture des villes arabes ?

Juger les criminels, survivre à la violence, reconstruire et faire société
Ce colloque propose une réflexion comparative sur les enjeux de l’ère post Assad, en mettant l’accent sur la question de la sortie de la violence et de la (re)construction sociale, politique et économique. Il abordera les effets de la violence, la gestion de la masse de ses traces et à la nécessité de justice. Il s’agira également d’explorer les nouvelles formes d’engagement et d’organisation ainsi que les tensions qui traversent les conceptions et les enjeux de la reconstruction. Cette séquence de transition sera réinscrite dans le temps long pour mieux comprendre les dynamiques historiques, mais aussi transnationales, des bouleversements en cours.

Spaces of Confinement: Memories of Repression and Coloniality
À l’occasion du 88e anniversaire de l’ouverture du camp de concentration colonial de Tarrafal, dans l’archipel du Cap-Vert (29 Octobre 1936 – 29 Octobre 2024), ce colloque international vise à élargir le débat sur les pratiques anciennes et nouvelles de l’enfermement, dans leurs multiples déclinaisons et modalités. D’une part, il s’agit d’aborder la forme camp dans une perspective historique ainsi que les différentes pratiques de l’incarcération coloniale. D’autre part, l’intention de ce colloque est de réfléchir de manière large et transdisciplinaire sur les espaces, les mémoires, les récits et les expériences de détention, et sur la manière dont leurs héritages marquent la généalogie des pratiques contemporaines d’enfermement.

Organisée autour du multilatéralisme en Asie centrale, de l’influence et le soft power, ainsi que de l’eau, l’environnement et la sécurité, cet événement a pour ambition de mettre l’Asie centrale au cœur des réflexions.

Politisations des archéologies : fouilles, conflits et mémoires
En nous montrant le site de Sobibor, où les nazis implantèrent un camp d’extermination avant de tenter d’en effacer les traces, le film « Sheol » d’Arnaud Sauli nous le rappelle : contemporainement ou des décennies plus tard, les restes matériels des activités humaines se retrouvent fréquemment au cœur d’enjeux et conflits juridiques, politiques ou encore moraux. Les savoirs « archéologiques », relatifs à ces restes matériels, jouent dès lors un rôle essentiel dans ces conflits, et qu’il s’agisse des savoirs développés scientifiquement que ceux possédés par tout un chacun. Dans ce séminaire, deux historiens des sciences et une ethnologue emploieront trois cas pour décliner les manières dont les rapports se nouent entre les enjeux du présent et ces restes matériels d’activités passées : qu’il s’agisse d’activités anciennes ou récentes, belliqueuses ou quotidiennes, et relatives aux constructions nationales en des contextes proches ou lointains, étatiques ou infra-étatiques (Suisse, Palestine et Israël, Pays Basque et Espagne).

Science, Technology and Nationalism in India
Although the question of nationalism in India has been of interest to many social science scholars, the relationship between science and nationalism has seldom been discussed in an in-depth manner. STS perspectives and debates allow a framework that investigates the pivotal role and position of science and technology in the realization of state policies in India through several technoscientific projects and illustrates how deeply it is enmeshed within the larger political and social goals of national growth and development. Therefore, we would like to investigate the role science and technology play in these imbrications, the challenges they pose, and how these new assemblages reconfigure power relations between the Global North and the Global South within India, between States and markets.

Rethinking Knowledge, Reshaping the University
17th Annual and International Colloquium of the Society of Activities and Research on the Indian World
University is one of the places (among others) of training, production and transmission of knowledge. If the goal of training is to participate in the process of social transformation, universities are one of the "unconditional" spaces (in the words of Derrida) to exchange with one's contemporaries. University remains a place where people mix, where people meet and where hospitality as a value still holds true to some extent. These attributes can also make it a place that can generate power struggles by holding up a mirror to society.This conference will address some issues regarding the future of higher studies in India, and in the Global South: How to continue to "produce" and share knowledge in the face of endless liberalization? What choices, what paths, what research projects can be on offer in the training programs at universities in the 21st century? How can we rethink knowledge and reshape the university? How can we reinvent the missions of academic transmission and research to meet the challenges of our time and anticipate those of the next generations?

Public space / private spaces in the light of the Arab Spring
À rebours des représentations officielles, médiatiques et néo-orientalistes de la division entre espace public/espace(s) privé(s), l’objectif de ce huitième colloque du Cercle des chercheurs sur le Moyen-Orient (CCMO) est d’analyser leurs chevauchements, leurs imbrications et interactions, voire leur caractère interchangeable : un espace privé étant susceptible à tout moment de se muer en espace public et inversement, un espace public pouvant épouser des logiques de privatisation et d’appropriation particulariste par un clan, une milice, une faction ou encore des groupes porteurs de causes spécifiques liées au genre, à la classe d’âge, à l’origine sociale ou encore à l’appartenance locale. Ce colloque invite à complexifier et à déconstruire cette opposition rigide entre espace public au singulier et espaces privés au pluriel, en interrogeant notamment la manière dont le politique se déploie dans des espaces privés ou semi-privés.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

In this workshop, we aim to take the view from below and investigate in what way imperial dynamics may have affected the lifeways of people in their territories. The basic questions of this workshop are: How did the empires of the Ancient Near East affect the lives of ordinary people in their realm? To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

After the Roskilde conference in 2018, devoted to mobility and migration, the Association for the Anthropology of Social Change and Development (APAD) proposes for its 2020 edition, co-organized with the Department of Anthropology and African Studies of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FSHS) of the University of Lomé (Togo), to focus on the multiple forms of large-scale circulation of goods, ideas, techniques, information and models that increasingly cross the global South and link it to the rest of the world. Panels or papers focusing on smaller-scale, regional or neighbouring countries' circulations, or showing the consequences of scale change in circulations, are also welcome.

Images and imaginations in the Middle East and North Africa
Depuis les années 2000, et en particulier à partir des « révolutions arabes » de 2011, les régions du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient ont connu une explosion d’images. Réalisées dans des espace-temps situés souvent au cœur des luttes et reprises à foison, parfois hors contexte, diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux ou dans les médias traditionnels, ces images et les points de vue singuliers qu’elles véhiculent sont l’œuvre aussi bien de producteurs professionnels que d’amateurs aux prises avec les événements. Ainsi elles ont participé à médiatiser les conflits et les revendications et à créer une proximité émotionnelle avec les événements. Elles ont aussi servi à se réapproprier un vécu ou à résister à un imaginaire imposé.

The 2020 edition of the Association for the anthropology of social change and development (APAD) conference will focus on the multiple forms of large-scale circulation of goods, ideas, techniques, information and models that increasingly cross the global South and link it to the rest of the world. Panels or papers focusing on smaller-scale, regional or neighbouring countries’ circulations, or showing the consequences of scale change in circulations, are also welcome. We also invite visual anthropologists and filmmakers to propose panels or submit films for public screenings.

Locating negative affects in post-reform China
This panel takes the prevalence of positivity in post-reform China as an invitation to investigate its opposites: the variety of negative ordinary affects that can be viewed as ensuing from state-induced “situations of restricted agency”. What can we learn from the various forms of negativity that morph out of the socio-political circumstances of post-reform China, and how to tread a fine line between the risk of romanticization and analytical dismissal? Under what conditions do the expression and performance of negative affects constitute “a manifestation of autonomy from state directives” in the context of pervasive “happiness” campaigns? Or is their work ambivalent, if not problematic, especially when they come to be associated with specific marginalized groups?

Seeing Politics through Intermediation and Intermediaries
This seminar proposes to look at politics through the lens of political intermediaries and what they do, i.e. intermediation. Intermediaries can be defined as an assorted group of actors (political brokers, political parties, interest groups, movements) who acts as a hinge between two or more levels, actors or social institutions; while intermediation , as a process, encompasses all the mediations that these actors perform in order to keep the political system intact (Zaremberg, Guarneros-Meza, and Lavalle 2017; Gunther, Puhle, and Montero 2007; Kitschelt 2004; Smith 2007). The question we are interested in relates to the transformations in the roles of these agents and processes of mediation since the neo-liberal transformation has engulfed the processes of public policy formulation, contestation and enactment.

The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia
Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.
